Show moreIPRO 364: Ramovation has the great opportunity to assist our community partner, Save the Ramova organization, in the development of preliminary design and business opportunity assessments for the renovation of the Ramova Theater. IPRO 364 is a continuing IPRO from the spring 2011 semester. From the spring semester, the IPRO 364 team created a preliminary program for the Ramova Theater renovation. The preliminary program was informed by analysis gathered from three research methods: case studies on other theater renovations, survey responses from the Bridgeport neighborhood and surrounding colleges, and contextual studies on neighborhoods similar to Bridgeport. A preliminary budget for the renovation was also determined. To tackle the summer 2011 IPRO workload, the summer team will divide into several sub groups which include the Design/Clean Energy Group, Budget/Finance Group, Case Study/Survey Group, and the Interview Group. In the summer semester, the IPRO team will expand on the preliminary program and preliminary budget created by the spring team. The IPRO group hopes the output from the Spring 2011, Summer 2011, and subsequent semesters will assist the Save the Ramova organization in presenting Ramova Theater renovation ideas to key stakeholders and also help spur development on the Halsted St. corridor of Bridgeport.

Show more12 legal research training modules. The following are brief summaries of short legal research lessons that the library can offer. This takes a modular approach where faculty can pick and choose and even combine modules. For example, one instructor may ask a librarian to come in for Getting Started and Case law on the same day, while another may want a librarian to come in and teach only Terms and Connectors. For each module, I give the name, student learning outcomes, suggested pairing of assignment/time in the semester, a summary of teaching activities, and the time I expect the module to take. In general, these class sessions take the form of a short talk and/or discussion to introduce the topic and teach some basic concepts, followed by group or individual work to practice researching while the instructor and the librarian walk around in the room, and some time to discuss the results as a group. Although the librarian takes the lead, faculty can expect to participate in the discussion. The librarians have found that the students are more engaged in research sessions when their instructor participates.

Show moreExamples of the 12 modules the Law School Research Librarians teach. These legal research teaching modules are designed to provide point-of-need training by librarians in Legal Writing I classes. Instructors are offered a basic "menu" of lectures to choose from, or research librarians are prepared to tailor individual lectures to the needs of each instructor. This provides both the instructor and the research librarians the flexibility to schedule classes as they see fit, with the goal of reaching students at the ideal time with each lecture.

Show moreThis talk looks at how engineering societies can promote ethical practice and discussion about ethics among their members. After some remarks about how engineers commonly handle ethical issues that come up within organizations, especially in instances when raising ethical issues with managers such as the Challenger Shuttle Explosion, the author goes on to discuss how engineering societies can promote continuing education in ethics, hold roundtable discussions between engineers and managers, and promote open communication in workplaces.
Address given at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. Chicago Area Combined Section Meeting, 27 September 1988.

Show moreThis presentation for the Illinois Vocational Education Coordinators Association is in three parts. The first seeks to make it easier for you to teach workplace ethics by freeing you from what the author calls "the four fears", namely the fear of not being value neutral, the fear of subjectivism, the fear of relativism, and the fear of impotence. After addressing these fears, Part II presents a classroom situation win which you could discuss workplace ethics, and some suggestions on teaching methods.

Show moreThree words of my title--"technology", "values", and "ethics"--have this in common: they have all been used in enough different ways to be dangerous. To provide the framework my title promises, I shall have to distinguish the most important of those uses, set them in context, and explain how they are (or are not) related. This conceptual housecleaning, rather boring in itself, will give me the opportunity to talk about engineering, both its history and practice. That will not be boring.
