Show moreIt is our objective to create a medium in which to combine the need of proficient web developers for university projects/ jobs as well as others looking for similar services outside of the university, with IIT students looking to gain experience as well as payment, whether through class credits or through wages. We plan to create a business model of a consulting firm that seeks out clients, as well as having clients brought to the firm, realize their needs, create a design document of their proposed website, then seek out the students with the capabilities matching the clients needs and “hire” them for the job, all the while maintaining that the quality of the student’s work will be sufficient to the client and therefore sufficient for our consulting firm. The start up companies/clients we gain will receive knowledge, expertise, and fresh ideas for a much needed website for their company/project. On the other hand the students will receive real-life experience working for a client in a certain timetable, with a standardized set of guidelines while also receiving some form of compensation.

Show moreThe focus of IPRO-330 is to help Chicago Public Schools facilitate the district wide science fair project. Each semester each of the 23 public high schools in our district hold science fairs within their school. The best projects are selected from these and are chosen to compete at the district science fair; this competition was held at IIT this year.

Show moreEscherichia coli O157:H7 is one of the most commonly reported pathogens associated with microbial contamination of leafy greens. Since washing is a major postharvest processing step, microbial testing of spent wash water has been suggested as a good marker to determine the contamination status of the products. In this study, the efficiency of four commercial rapid methods (BAX®, IQ-Check, Reveal® and mini-VIDAS®) for detection of E.coli O157:H7 in lettuce wash water was evaluated in comparison with the FDA BAM method. The improvement of the detection sensitivity of these tests by immunomagnetic separation (IMS) technology and sample pre-concentration by Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF) was determined. Twenty-five ml of lab prepared lettuce wash water samples were spiked with 0, 1, 10, 100 CFU of E.coli O157:H7, and subjected to enrichment protocols recommended by each of the methods. The presence of E.coli O157:H7 in the enriched samples were then assayed by the test kits, either directly or after IMS (IMS-Pathatrix ™ or IMS-Dynabeads™) treatments. All four test kits and BAM were able to detect E.coli O157:H7 at levels as low as 1 CFU/25ml of wash water. IMS treatments did not lead to further improvement in detection sensitivity. Experiments were also performed to determine the feasibility of incorporating IMS and sample pre-concentration to achieve culture-free detection. Fifty ml of wash water samples were inoculated with E.coli O157:H7 at levels of 0 to 107 CFU and analyzed by the test kits either directly or after IMS-Pathatrix™ treatment. Additionally, 10 L of wash water either prepared in the lab or collected from a commercial fresh-cut processing facility were inoculated with 0 – 106 CFU of the pathogen and subjected to TFF concentration prior to IMS or test kit analyses. IQ-Check showed the highest sensitivity with a detection limit as low as 103 CFU/50ml, and, with IMS, achieved a sensitivity of 100 CFU/50ml. Combining TFF concentration and IMS, 10 L of lab prepared wash water can be tested with IQ-Check and achieve a detection limit of approx. 100 CFU/10 L within 6 hours. For 10L of industry spent wash water, IQ-check also showed the highest sensitivity but the results lacked consistency and required additional evaluations.

Show moreA numerical scheme is presented for classifying the different static bifurcation behaviors exhibited by a nonlinear system in its remaining parameter space. This numerical technique differs from previously published schemes in that the application of singularity theory is done numerically and requires no explicit differentiations of the system in question. It also does not require the reduction of the mathematical model to a scalar equation. The utility of this multivariable scheme will be demonstrated through an application to a seven PDE tubular packed-bed reactor model.

Show moreeyeCan seeks to develop and prototype assistive devices that will enable the visually impaired to exercise independently. Initially, our efforts have been devoted to developing a device that will allow such individuals to swim independently which from a sighted person‟s perspective might not be perceived as an issue. From research we have found this not to be the case, for the visually impaired it‟s very difficult to swim without causing harm to themselves. With our product eyeSwim, we hope to improve the quality of life for visually impaired individuals by providing them with opportunity to exercise safely. Currently, eyeCan is in the process of researching other activities i.e. running, biking, climbing which may prove to be another opportunity for expanding the business‟ focus.

Show moreA method for detecting an enhanced image of an object by independently analyzing, detecting, digitizing, and combining images acquired on a high and a low angle side of a rocking curve of a crystal analyzer. An x-ray beam generated by a line x-ray source is collimated by a crystal monochromator including two non-matching crystals to form an x-ray area beam. The x-ray area beam is transmitted through an object to be imaged and onto an image detector and the image is digitized. The digitized images are simultaneously solved, preferably on a pixel-by-pixel basis, to derive an enhanced image which has dramatically improved contrast and spatial resolution over an image acquired through conventional radiology methods.

Show moreLocated in Oakbrook, IL the architects and engineers of IPRO 315 will design a 22 story hotel. Together architects and engineers will modify and re analyze a structure created by pervious designers, and select any new materials for construction. In creating the hotel students will be responsible for the structural analysis of columns, beams, foundation, steel, and concrete design required to insure all serviceability requirements. The students will be required to follow the 2006 International Building Code, and secure the safety of all possible occupants. Management, leadership, ethics, and teamwork will be an integral part of building a large scale structure as students learn to work together on a “real life” project.

Show moreThere are several types of framing that can be used on a greenhouse. The frames are made of wood, galvanized steel, or aluminum. Build-it-yourself greenhouse plans are usually for structures with wood or metal pipe frames. Plastic pipe materials generally are inadequate to meet snow and wind load requirements. Frames can be covered with glass, rigid fiberglass, rigid double-wall plastics, or plastic film. All have advantages and disadvantages. Each of these materials should be considered--it pays to shop around for ideas.

Show moreA method of making a molded biodegradable food receptacle product including the steps of grinding up non-toxic agricultural waste plant material like soy, rice, oat and wheat hulls into particles having a range of sizes so that, if compressed in a mold, the smaller particles substantially fill the spaces between the much larger ones. Where necessary, there is added to the particles a natural and biodegradable binder-forming material, like an edible vegetable oil which will bind like a food receptacle the particles together to form a leak-proof receptacle, when inserted into a mold and compressed by the mold walls at elevated temperatures will produce compact well bound together particles. Without any chemical or physical pretreatment of the ground particles and particle-binder feed mix, the unpretreated mix, with or without small amounts of coloring, aromatic or foaming agents, is fed into a pressure-applying mold. The initial pressure and temperature preferably squeezes inherent binding-forming oils from the preferably seed hulls which freely flow through the mix. The high pressure is then partially reduced and the mold temperature is elevated to maximize the binding action of the binder materials as they solidify.

Show moreDuring the fall 2009 semester, IPRO 358 plans to continue the development and creation of mock-ups for the Delta Hook Technology (DHT) as well as lay the foundation for a business model for Sparrowhawk, LLC, an early stage company. Sparrowhawk has investigated the concept for an innovative fishing hook that is not currently on the market or ready to be launched. The members of IPRO 358 will work together to design mock-ups of the DHT, test the mock-ups, and determine measures that can be taken to improve the DHT. Subsequent mock-ups will continue to improve based on results of the product testing. Simultaneously, we will be working towards better understanding the consumer’s behavior. This will aid in the determination of the probable distribution channels and the strategies to best use them.
