Show moreThe objective of this semester’s IPRO 309 will be to incorporate three seminars into the framework proposed by last year’s IPRO 309. Fall 2010’s IPRO 309 proposed an educational curriculum that helped train individuals in Orthotics and Prosthetics in Categories I, II, and III. The goal is to improve on last year’s IPRO proposal and bring it closer to completion. Although the awareness of medical advancements is central, the well-being of patients is also of equal importance. Compatibility of medical devices and their psychological impacts on patients need to be understood by people involved in orthotics and prosthetics. Also related to a better patient care, it is beneficial to create a feasible way of tracking patient information. To emphasize these, seminars will be introduced consisting of materials compatibility, patient well-being, and electronic medical record keeping. Material compatibility will explore aspects such as patient-device interaction and minimizing negative reactions due to the orthotic and prosthetic devices, which includes rashes or other sorts of discomfort. Patient well-being will evaluate the psychological impact of said devices on the patient and help them incorporate the devices into their daily lives. Electronic medical record keeping will introduce technology that will enable practitioners to gather and track the patient’s medical records with ease. The main technology to explore for this course would be the Quick Response (QR) Technology that is incorporated in many smartphones today. These seminars will help increase awareness that orthotics and prosthetics are not just medical fields, but instead a series of professional relationships with patients to help them endure the difficulties and pains they are going through. The goal is that medical professionals will be able to provide the best care possible to patients, both physically and mentally. Additional improvements will also be made on the capstone design course, introduced in previous IPROs, by incorporating methods being used in capstone courses at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Show moreAt one time the Michael Reese Campus was a thriving mix of famous architecture and medical centers. Recently planned to be the home of the 2016 Olympic Village, with the loss of the bid the land has been abandoned. IPRO 356 is tasked with the challenge of designing a plan to redevelop the site. Building on previous work established by IPRO’s 359 and 356, we will use the first winning anchor and master plan created for the site and develop a second anchor. This second anchor and updated master plan aims at meeting the needs of the surrounding neighborhood while bringing life back to the area.

Show moreThe team working on this project has set itself three major objectives. Firstly it strives to create a comprehensive and in-depth database containing valuable information concerning sustainability. This database should be user-friendly and intuitively presented so people who are interested in sustainability are quickly educated with the key points and have easy access to relevant and high quality references and further readings. The second objective of this project essentially consists of creating a roadmap and master plan on how to make Illinois Institute of Technology’s (IIT) Main Campus sustainable. This will be done by auditing and then benchmarking IIT to other similar projects. This roadmap and master plan will be developed with the vision that once implemented IIT will be a leader in sustainability and encourage many others to follow our track. Lastly the third objective is to create a house of the future. The house of the future has many objectives for itself. It should incorporate current design possibilities and make use of various available technologies to be sustainable and energy efficient among other things. This house should attract the public and educate them how easily sustainability can be achieved using current technology and knowledge at a competitive price.

Show moreIPRO 339 is focused on providing an affordable housing option for the working poor in Juarez, Mexico. This semester we will research the technologies involved in reusing shipping containers for this housing. We will design a prototype housing unit which will relate to other units in an overall community, with services such as commerce, open spaces for activity, and community centers to support them. We wish to design a housing community that embodies the ideals of humanity, affordability, functionality, opportunity, sustainability, durability, safety, culture, and neighborhood. In order to do this, our team for the Spring Semester has set forth the following objectives: • Research and understand the users of our product by looking at the social, economic, and physical factors in Juarez, Mexico and in the Maquiladoras where they work. • Research the most cost efficient and sustainable ways of incorporating plumbing, HVAC, and electricity into the homes. • Research the structural aspects of building this community. • Develop a potential site plan and floor plans and sections for the housing units. • Using our research and designs, develop a proposal for our sponsor, considering the client at hand.

Show moreIPRO 336’s objective is performing an original experimental study that will help to determine the effects that stack effect phenomenon has on the distribution of the pressure and the airflow movements within high rise buildings. Specifically, the effect that phenomenon has a on the movement of the fume (in case of fire) and pollutant gases, which are directly related to the safety of the inhabitants. As a part of this project, the team is planning to: Quantify the effect of pressure variation due to stack effect on airflow diffusers Characterize the airflow diffuser Perform the air-tightness measurement of the building envelope Measure the airflow, pressure difference, temperature, relative humidity and air velocity in order to determine the thermal comfort indices (PMV, PPD and others) Deliver a descriptive report of effects that stack effect has in case of fire, and prescribe possible solutions

Show moreIn the construction industry, safety is obviously a big concern. Companies take many precautions to reduce the number of incidents that occur to reduce costs and save lives. As one of these precautions, construction companies purchase extra safety equipment to save the lives of workers to supplement regular required products such as hard hats. However, despite all of the safety equipment that is used, accidents still occur. For example, there was a flood in Chicago in 1992 which cost more than two billion dollars in reparations because a worker placed a wooden piling into the wrong place. Tyche Technologies will solve this problem by providing accident prevention technologies that use augmented reality (AR) to enhance the awareness of the construction worker. This additional information will let the worker know where key construction hazards are, such as the location of pipes and cables that run underground. Our team will develop a business plan and a prototype to demonstrate the feasibility of this project and attract potential sponsors/investors. The business plan will outline the market and financial feasibility of this product as well as any other problems/concerns that we foresee. The prototype will demonstrate how an AR environment can be created and relevant information uploaded and displayed to a user.

Show moreIPRO 306 team is tasked with assisting a major plumbing manufacturer, Sloan Valve, in improving the global chain supply as well as the overall effectiveness and efficacy of their equipment and processes. Sloan Valve has three projects with IPRO 306 will be involved, and they range in three different fields of the manufacturer. The projects which IPRO 306 will be involved are: • Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) • Cost Matrix • Green Supply Chain The Cost matrix project group seeks to develop a tool that can capture and compare the different costs the company incurs when buying parts oversees vs. domestic. Sloan's idea is to start selling their products in other parts of the world at competitive price. Some of these markets are very competitive when it comes to price. So if Sloan buys materials domestically may not be able to offer competitive pricing worldwide. By creating a cost matrix tool, the company will be able to compare costs of raw material ordered abroad versus locally and wisely decide what the best choice to pursue is. The Second project is Overall Equipment Efficiency (herein after as OEE) which will be a continuation of last semester Lean Implementation project. OEE is designed to eliminate any downtime of a machine. Through a tracking process, OEE will help eliminate downtime and efficiently determine what is causing this down time. The goal of the project is to further make the OEE process more efficient in addition to creating and perfecting a tracking system which will be able to analyze and create reports from the data that will be input into the system. The third project is the Green Supply Chain. Currently, there is no industry standard for being “green.” The goal of this project is to establish a definition of “green,” and create a cost effective, consumer appealing, way to introduce this into the Sloan Valve supply chain. After defining “green,” team members will examine and create a strategy detailing ways in which Sloan Valve can implement green initiatives into the Sloan Valve supply chain. The purpose of this document is to give a detailed overview of the project, as it is currently defined through our meetings and charters provided by Sloan Valve. This document will provide critical information about the project involving the team and its assets, team goals, conflict resolutions and more. In addition it will also provide a brief background on Sloan Valve, along with a discussion of issues facing both the company and the IPRO team. A methodology of the project will be discussed as well as key deliverables and a work breakdown structure of the project.
