Show moreThe aim of this project is to develop a stand-alone wearable body sensor network with the primary aim of fall detection of human bodies. This network should be able to detect a fall remotely and in real time, and send an intimation along with the relevant medical details to an emergency contact and/or the nearest hospital. Several methods of fall detection have been discussed in this report and the advantages and disadvantages of them are analyzed. An optimal fall detecting mech- anism has been chosen to perform the function. Physical sensors have been used for detection of the fall, namely accelerometers and gyroscopes. Data has been collected from these sensor, and a central processing node has been utilized to process the incoming data to determine whether a fall has taken place as well as detecting the position and orientation of the body that the sensors are strapped on to. A Rasp- berry Pi processor acts as the central node. The threshold technique is employed to determine if the body has fallen over, and in what orientation it lands. The smart phone is used as a communication node and the result from the processor is obtained in a form that can be sent to the smart phone via bluetooth for further operation.

Show moreThis thesis investigates the effect of feature descriptor selection on pedestrian detection process. Pedestrian detection, the problem of recognizing, locating and tracking humans in videos has become a challenging task in computer vision area. Video surveillance and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are few appli- cations of pedestrian detection. At the very rst stage of the pedestrian detection system, feature descriptors are created to describe the texture, shape and color in- formation of the pedestrian candidate. These extracted features, acts as an input to develop and test a pedestrian classi er Feature descriptor techniques su er from di erent kinds of problems such as illumination variation of the dataset, pedestrian pose di erences and noise in the region of interest (ROI). To overcome the problem of illumination change, depth maps, can be exploited due to their robustness under various illuminations. Considering real-time nature of the targeted applications, another important challenge for the feature descriptor technique is the computational complexity and also the resulting dimension of the feature space. In the initial part of this thesis, several feature descriptor techniques are ex-plored. In the primary part of this thesis work, two critical stages of pedestrian detec- tion are improved, depth map computation stage and the feature descriptor creation stage. Two novel fast techniques to compute depth maps are proposed for the depth- map computation stage; three newly proposed new descriptors are proposed which work on depth channel or a combination of depth and color to adaptively overcome the illumination variation problem while still maintaining low dimensional feature space. These methods are found to outperform existing state-of-the-art descriptors and with exceptionally low computational complexity.

Show moreHybrid dynamical systems are systems that combine continuous dynamics with discrete transitions. Such systems can exhibit many unique phenomena, such as Zeno behavior. Zeno behavior is the occurrence of infinite discrete transitions in finite time. This phenomenon has been likened to a form of finite-time asymptotic stability, wherein trajectories converge asymptotically to compact sets in finite time whilst undergoing infinite transitions. Corresponding Lyapunov theorems have been developed. The main objective of our research was to develop computational techniques to determine whether or not a given hybrid system exhibits this Zeno phenomenon. In this thesis, we propose a method to algorithmically construct Lyapunov functions to prove Zeno stability of compact sets in hybrid systems. We use sum-of-squares programming to construct Lyapunov functions that allow us to prove Zeno stability of compact sets for hybrid systems with polynomial vector fields. Examples illustrating the use of the proposed technique are also provided. Finally, we provide a method using sum-of-squares programming to show Zeno stability of compact sets for systems with parametric uncertainties in the vector field, guard sets and domains, and transition maps. We then discuss potential applications of the proposed methods, along with examples.

Due to environmental concerns and customer desires, a considerable increase of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) is expected. A technology of Vehicle to Grid (V2G) is emerging in the electric power industry. This technology provides connections between PHEVs and microgrids, and utilize PHEVs as distributed generators for grid support or as backup power sources. With the development of Electric Vehicles, wound field synchronous machines (WFSM) have been used and studied in EV traction motors and generators. For the application of EV technology, WFSMs have several advantages over permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSM) and induction machines (IM) including the complete control of the field excitation from the rotor side, higher system and machine efficiencies, and reduced cost due to the absence of rare earth permanent magnets. At the same time, WFSMs can work as generators to realize power take-off and microgrid support for EV tractions. Due to the several advantages of WFSMs in EVs application, this research focuses on the control of the WFSM in PHEVs for power take-off and grid support as a generator. PHEVs internal combustion (IC) engine is considered as a prime mover and would couple to the shaft which is connected to the WFSM. Such PHEVs applications would be used as power supplies for nearby loads and microgrids. This system is able to reduce cost of power electronics converters and directly provides desired AC voltage. This work aims to study the power take-off from hybrid electric vehicles using wound field synchronous machines and operation in microgrids. The feasible HEVs configurations to realize this purpose is studied. The modeling of IC engine, wound field synchronous machine, brushless exciter and distributed generators (DGs) in microgrid is demonstrated. One disadvantage of this application is the time delay during the combustion progress in the IC engine. This delay could affect the stability and dynamic response of the system. At the same time, the IC engine based generators have slower dynamic response compared with power electronic based sources. A state variable voltage regulator and a rotor speed controller are designed to improve the performance of the system. These controllers enable wound field synchronous machines provide desired voltage frequency and voltage magnitude. A real power - frequency droop controller and a reactive power – voltage droop controller are also studied. The droop controllers would keep the stability and better power quality of the system for islanded mode operation and grid-connected mode operation. The droop controllers enable EVs system share loads in a desire portion of power with other DGs in the grid and this reactive power – voltage droop controller would eliminate the circulating reactive power in the whole grid system. The EV’s isolated power take-off operation, islanded mode operation in microgrid with other DGs, and grid connected mode operation in microgrid are discussed. Stabilities, disturbance responses, and load sharing abilities are shown in simulation studies. The results are presented and discussed.

In particular, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have helped reduce fuel emissions by using electrical power to power the vehicle. HEVs have been enhanced by the use of hybrid-energy-storage-systems (HESS), which use an ultracapacitor to satisfy peak-power demands, thereby increasing the life of the battery. In this paper, dynamic models of the individual components of a HEV are created from dynamic equations, and then implemented in Simulink. The components include a realistic battery, an ultracapacitor, and a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor. The models are simulated, and the results serve as a basis for how these components should behave. Next, the various power management and control algorithms of a HESS are presented. Then, several HESS topologies are modeled in PSIM, which is a simulation tool for power electronics and motor drives. Simulation results for a simple drive-cycle are presented, and the pros and cons of each topology are described. Considerations are given as to the topologies with the best combination of performance, cost, and life cycle. Furthermore, the benefits of using a HESS in terms of cost, volume, weight, and efficiency, are explained in more detail. Finally, some limitations of PSIM that affected simulation results are explained. Overall, this thesis lays out the various factors that affect choices in HESS topologies.

Show moreSpace-time coding and Beamforming are two main techniques utilized in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems to increase channel capacity. In this work, we present new beamforming algorithms and space-time codes for MIMO wireless systems to reduce the complexity and enhance the performance. We present a new framework to obtain beamforming algorithms for code division multiple access (CDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems based on principal component analysis (PCA) approach. Four different PCA objective functions are used as examples to illustrate how to obtain new beamforming algorithms based on the proposed framework. Since two of the objective functions result in the same algorithm, three different beamforming algorithms are obtained for CDMA and OFDM systems. We show that the new algorithms offer a desirable performance while they have considerably lower computational complexity than the optimum algorithms. It is demonstrated that the proposed algorithms also have a fast convergence rate. We also propose new space-time codes for both coherent and non-coherent wireless systems which can provide lower symbol error rates than existing codes in the same class. For the coherent case, we propose a new quasi-orthogonal code to provide a full-rate full-diversity transmission. Unlike the other codes in the literature, the proposed code does not require the transmitted symbols to be chosen from two different constellations. Choosing all symbols from only one constellation reduces the required storage memory to half of that needed in other methods. It also avoids decreasing the minimum distance between the symbols and hence, avoids degrading the coding gain. For the non-coherent case, a new constellation design for differential unitary space-time modulation is proposed. We generate xi a set of unitary matrices from the multiplication of a simple unitary matrix with entries of 1 by diagonal matrices made from quaternary alphabets. Then, the proposed constellation is formed from the product of the optimum matrix chosen from this set and the optimized diagonal matrix first used for the cyclic codes. We show that the proposed constellation yields a larger diversity product as well as a lower union bound for pairwise error probability with the same or lower complexity compared to other existing constellations.

Show moreIn the first part of this thesis, analysis of magnetic gears which includes operation analysis and loss analysis is introduced. With these analysis, the behavior of magnetic gears are deeply studied for their advantages and disadvantages. Their performance in terms of torque transfer, speed transfer, and the loss are the main focus. With different properties setting for magnetic gear, the influence of these properties to the final performance are also studied. By comparing results from different simulation software and different methods, the results are analyzed more accuracy and detailed. For loss analysis, FFT are utilized for harmonics analysis. This analysis was done by Matlab. All these analysis processes and results lead to the next part of this thesis which is optimization for magnetic gear. The second portion of this thesis focuses on core loss reduction in magnetic gears. Pole shaping similar to what is used in electric machines to reduce electromagnetic torque ripple is introduced to attempt to reduce higher order harmonic flux components in the magnetic gears without reducing power density. In this part, lots of simulation shows the work analysis of magnetic gear to verify the working principle and optimizations results. Large ripple problems of magnetic gear are also found during this part.

Show moreConstruction Management (CM), in general, has on objective of achieving greater benefits in terms of cost and time for owners of a construction project. Professional management services are also the responsibilities of a construction manager. CM includes not only the management services but also the interdisciplinary information and data sharing. So the CM can use these presented information of a proposed project before and during power plant construction from the technical point of view. However, there is still ambiguity about the compatibility of the CM duties and responsibilities. This study determines whether there is a need for updating the duties and responsibilities of the CM for power plant construction, presents the fundamentals of power plant construction management profession, introduces CCGT (combined cycle gas turbine) power plant technologies, evaluates previous and existing datas on power plant construction regarding their usage in CM practice in terms of cost, and presents the updated duties and responsibilities of the CM. A case study is also conducted to identify the costs of a current power plant. Based on the collected information’s and case study, it is determined that the CM is highly needed in power plant industry that runs even in the recession periods. On the other hand, the management functions of the power plant industry are still deficient. This study does not include a specific chapter that defines deficiencies and solutions to those in terms of proposed duties and responsibilities. However, new approaches and practical application results are presented from the very beginning of this thesis till the end of the study.

In a network with given physical and topological characteristics, uneven distribution of tra c between nodes may re- sult in parts of the network being underutilized while other parts may experience congestion and its related e ect of higher delays, and even packet loss if bu ers be- come overloaded. Overload results in longer queuing delays, which are a major, if not the major, source of packet delay. Internet nodes typically route based on a single best (shortest) path without taking into account link occupancy and without taking full advantage of all available network resources. So a method for improving network performance is to allow nodes to use multiple paths to route packets to a given desti- nation. In this research project the main objective is to nd the best algorithm that, applied to a multi-commodity network, produces multi-path ow assignments that minimize the maximum cross-network delay. The motivation for this objective is the tighter requirements for quality of service coming from real-time streaming services, such as voice and video, which restrict the maximum source-destination packet delay. An analytical approach, based on Lagrange Multipliers, was investigated which led to the design of an iterative algorithm that can be proved to converge to the opti- mal path and ow con guration. From that algorithm a simpli ed heuristic algorithm was derived, that achieves results close to optimal. Another heuristic but more intu- itive algorithm, similar to the algorithm described in [6], was also investigated and found to also o ers good results and to be computationally e cient. The two heuristic algorithms were simulated with Java programs and, as a benchmark, the single path algorithm that is commonly used in the Internet was also simulated. That simulation was also done with Java programs. Performance comparisons for the three types of simulations is also provided. For a more realistic evaluation, the intuitive heuristic algorithm was also simu- viii lated in the NS-3 simulation environment (in addition to the Java simulation). NS-3 is a state-of-the-art industry standard widely used in the academic world, and for it a distributed routing protocol, that implements the maximum delay minimization algorithms without centralized control, was designed.
