Show moreThe primary goal of Bridge Condition Assessment (BCA) is to determine the condition of a bridge to prevent any catastrophic failure as well as to enhance the structure’s safety and serviceability. The structural health and condition of in-service bridges is generally assessed through visual inspections and nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT/NDE) methods conducted on a pre-set schedule. However, the ratings obtained from current visual inspections on a bridge are subjective, and do not include the uncertainty inherent in the results. Moreover, the condition ratings are often based on independent inspections and do not take into account the dependence of results on previous conditions of a bridge and prior condition ratings compiled for it. Furthermore, there is also a certain level of uncertainty involved in relating subjective ratings to the actual condition of the bridge. This study is aimed at conducting a research on damage detection of existing bridges utilizing available information on their structural conditions. The first part of the research focuses on a new method for assessing the condition of a bridge based on subjective ratings obtained for the bridge. This method will hereafter be referred to as Bayesian Bridge Condition Assessment (BBCA). BBCA consists of three parts: (1) identification of condition states for structural components, (2) determination of a Damage Index (DI), a parameter to describe the extent of damage to a structural component, and (3) determination of an Updated Damage Index (UDI) using Bayesian updating approach. UDI offers an enhanced measure that incorporates not only the relation between subjective rating and the structure’s health condition, but also the significance of new information as it becomes available. The basic assumptions and x general formulations of the Bayesian updating method is presented. Numerical illustrations are provided to demonstrate the applicability of the method to highway bridges. It is shown that the method described in this study is especially applicable to bridges for which visual inspection data are compiled on a periodic basis. One of the methodologies for damage detection and assessment is to use sensor data for identifying the modal characteristics of the structure. The second part of this research focuses on improving upon damage detection methods using sensor and/or modal data. Thus a new method for damage detection and assessment of structures using finite element analysis, and modal data is developed and demonstrated. This method will hereafter be referred to as Bayesian Structural Condition Assessment (BSCA). Using this method, (1) a Finite Element (FE) design model of the structure (undamaged) is constructed; (2) the measured modal data is updated using a Bayesian framework; and (3) the FE model of existing structure (with possibility of damage) is obtained using updated modal data based on an iterative optimization method that is used in estimating the stiffness of the damaged structure. Using these steps, the location and extent of any possible damage is then determined based on the difference between a structural element stiffness for the “as built condition” and “damaged condition.” Several numerical illustrations are presented to demonstrate the capability of the method to detect the location and extent of the damage. This method has been applied to a structural health monitoring benchmark problem; and it has been shown that it can identify the location and extent of damage with more accuracy than most other existing models. Construction Site Monitor (CSM), a hybrid mobile application is created that provides both formal and informal schedule information exchange between project participants with relevant visual attachments. It can be run on iPads, iPhones and Android phones. It has been developed by using Bizness and Wufoo platforms. It is easy to use, provides timely access to schedule/progress information, functions efficiently, hence minimizing costly and time consuming claims and disputes, and finally reliable accurate information compared to traditional paper-based methods. A limited survey of practitioners confirmed that all these benefits are likely to occur if CSM is deployed. The construction industry is behind in adopting information and communication technologies (ICT) as other industries do; the construction industry should pay attention to applications like CSM in order to improve productivity.

Show moreNowadays, State transportation agencies have developed management systems as analytical tools to improve roadway safety. Management systems dealing with traffic safety hardware including traffic signs, signals, lighting, pavement markings, guardrails, barriers, and crash cushions have been identified as an important and non-separable part of safety management. As statistics shown, approximately 42,000 deaths on American roads due to vehicle crashes with one of the main causes being in lack of adequately performed safety hardware. It is easily realized that along the time the performance of traffic safety hardware decreases. State transportation agencies have spent millions of dollars on maintenance and replacement of safety hardware in each year. However, most of the agencies have not developed robust methodologies to assess impacts of traffic safety hardware on safety performance and optimize safety hardware investments. This study began with a literature review of safety performance functions and useful service lives of different types of safety hardware. Based on findings of the literature review and case studies conducted nationwide, this research proposes a new risk-based methodology for computing the safety index that assesses impacts of safety hardware conditions on vehicle crashes. The methodology is applied to a computational study by using 5- year data from 2002 to 2006 on 193 highway segments in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. The results are compared with Empirical Bayesian adjusted crash estimates via statistical tests in order to validate the proposed methodology. Finally, it discusses future directions for continuing refinements of the proposed methodology.

Show moreA ground source heat pump system (GSHP) is a heating and air-conditioning system where a ground source is used as a heat source and sink. Potential ground sources include groundwater, surface water, and ground. A GSHP has several advantages over other heat pump systems, such as an air-source heat pump, because it has higher heating and cooling efficiency, more energy savings, and lower CO2 emissions. A treated wastewater source heat pump (TWSHP) system is similar to a GSHP system, but the TWSHP system relies on a treated wastewater source, which means that the source temperature is variable. A TWSHP is more convenient and offers greater cost savings; the TWSHP system avoids the costs associated with pumping, grouting, and drilling because the treated wastewater is already available at the surface. RETScreen is a software product that provides a methodology to study the feasibility of installing a constant-temperature source GSHP system. Advantages of using RETScreen include it is tested, valuable, readily available, and free. If design of a variable-temperature source TWSHP system can take advantage of RETSceen methodology, it would bring a tremendous help for TWSHP applications. This paper presents a case study to test whether a TWSHP system can take advantage of RETSceen methodology. The approach involves an assessment of TWSHP system operating performance under variable source temperatures. Results show that a TWSHP system can take advantage of RETSceen methodology for a variable source temperatures span over a certain range. In this study the heating temperature ranged from 9 to 16 ℃ and the cooling temperature ranged from 11 to 22℃. Keywords: treated wastewater source heat pump; RETScreen methodology

The preservation of these structures is receiving a great deal of attention in the structural engineering community. And as such, restoration, strengthening and reinforcement of historical masonry bridges have become a challenge for civil engineers. At the present time, most important problems of masonry arch bridges are heavy traffic loads and destructive natural disasters. These bridges were constructed centuries ago and they addressed the load-carrying problems of old times. With the passing of the time, the traffic changed and many natural disasters occurred. Correspondingly, loads on masonry arch bridges have increased and the traffic on the bridges have become more intense in the course of time. However, the bridges keep up to their initial performance; and this shows the complexity of their structural behaviors. This study provides the background information about masonry arch bridges and their components. It also helps us better understand the construction materials, structural properties and structural behavior of masonry arch bridges. In light of this background information, this study presents an overview of seismic retrofit for masonry arch bridges and a comprehensive study on the type, mechanism of failure and structural integrity of masonry arch bridges.

Show moreTrusses, although geometrically simple, constitute rather complex structures when one considers their true behavior. Even though they are designed considering pin connections for their joints, in practice joints are neither pinned nor fixed. For this reason, the behavior of a truss at its joints is rather complicated; and to a great extent depends on the method of fabrication used including the weld patterns and the geometry and design of gusset plates used. This study focuses on the behavior of welded truss joints by using a three-dimensional finite element analysis in an effort to provide an insight into how stress patterns are developed at a joint when it is subject to loads from adjoining truss members. The research included a series of simulation analyses on a simple truss joint with welded connections. The typical joint is those that can be found in the lower chords of trusses used in highway bridges. The simulations employed linear finite element analyses utilizing solid elements to model the weld, connecting elements and the gusset plates. Stresses obtained from these analyses were compared with those through conventional methods. At points of stress concentrations, stresses from the finite element (FE) analyses showed stresses can be as high as 5 – 10 orders of magnitude higher than those from conventional methods. The results are presented in the form of graphs showing the ratio of FE-based results to those from conventional methods for several different configurations for weld length.
