Show morePhotograph of the Mecca Flats, located at 3360 South State Street and constructed in 1891. The apartments were designed by Edbrooke & Burnham, and were demolished in 1952. Originally constructed as a hotel for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, the 96-unit Mecca building became an apartment building after the fair. The building was acquired by Illinois Tech around 1941, and was demolished in 1952 to make way for the construction of S.R. Crown Hall. The building was also known as Mecca Apartments, and The Mecca.

The building, built in 1920s, originally housed the Huber and Huber Motor Express trucking terminal. The building was acquired by the Armour Research Foundation in 1949, and renovated in the 1950s. It housed various ARF activities in the subsequent decades, including Physics and Chemistry research, before housing the Institute for Psychological Services in the years immediately prior to its demolition in 1975.

When Armour Flats was demolished, these units left on Federal St. to the south of the Armour Mission building were left standing. Once known as Cudahy mansion, this building was purchased in 1939 for graduate students. It served as one of IIT's Naval housing quarters from approximately 1943-45. After World War II, the building housed graduate students and, from 1948-61, the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Formerly known as Cudahy Mansion (1880s-1919) , Chicago Motor Club (1919-1929), Quarters 2 (1943-1946), Graduate House (1939-1943, 1946-1948), Brown House (1950s), Brown Hall. Photographer unknown.
