- Adaptive control strategy for regulation of blood glucose levels in patients with type 1 diabetes
- Current insulin therapy for patients with type 1 diabetes often results in high variability in blood glucose concentrations and may cause hype rglycemic/hypoglycemic episodes. Closing the glucose control loop with a fully automated electro-mechanical pancreas will improve the quality of life for insulin-dependent patients. An adaptive control algorithm is proposed to keep glucose concentrations within normoglycemic range and dynamically respond to glycemic challenges. A model-based control strategy is used to calculate the required insulin infusion rate, while the model parameters are recursively tuned. The algorithm handles delays associated with insulin absorption, time-lag between subcutaneous and blood glucose concentrations, and variations in inter/intra-subject glucose-insulin dynamics. Simulation results for simultaneous meat and physiological disturbances are demonstrated for subcutaneous insulin infusion., Endnote format citation for DOI:10.1016/j.jprocont.2009.04.004

- Decision Making Tool for Warehouse Logistics Pricing (semester?), IPRO 319
- distribution operation which will aid companies seeking to outsource logistics operations. However, the team’s main objective is to add a Request for Proposal tool to the existing model allowing companies to determine the effectiveness of outsourcing different aspects of warehouse operations. This team hopes to generate willingness in its members to establish an environment conducive to team-oriented goals, as outlined in the objectives below. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically warehouse logistics pricing. For the spring semester, the team has set forth the following objectives: Analyze existing model (Shipping, Manufacturing, Transportation, etc.) in terms of being user-friendly and effectiveness at accurately predicting cost versus revenue and whether the operations input should be outsourced. Refine the current model given the suggestions of a surveyed group, not differentiating the contributions of the IPRO students from the software users. - Supersonic Jet Screech: Half-century from Powell to the Present
- Under certain conditions, shock-containing jets produce an intense tone referred to as screech. Screech was discovered about half a century ago by Alan Powell in England. Here I recount developments in supersonic jet screech - from Powell's first observation in 1951 to now. During this period more than 200 papers have been published - many offering only incremental advances. This paper provides a concise screech resource including a historical perspective, a summary of recent developments and a critical assessment of the state of the art. Topics include modulation of instability waves by shocks, shock-cell models and screech frequency prediction models, unsteady shock motions and clues about their role in shock noise generation. also. detailed nearfield measurements and computer simulation methods now available are discussed. However, despite the advances, screech amplitude prediction remains an elusive but increasingly important goal not only due to concerns about sonic fatigue failure of aircraft structures but because knowledge gained by the study of screech can be applied to a variety of resonant flow situations, including jet impingement, cavity resonance, and closed-loop active flow control. - Virtual Sorbent Bed Systems and Methods of Using Same
- Virtual sorbent bed systems and methods for receiving contaminants from a waste stream are presented. In an embodiment, the virtual sorbent bed system comprises an outlet for introducing into the gas stream a material capable of receiving contaminants, a first charged DC electrode oriented substantially peripheral to the gas stream and normal to the flow of the gas stream; a second charged DC electrode oriented substantially peripheral to the gas stream and normal to the flow of the gas stream, wherein the first DC charged electrode and the second charged DC electrode cooperatively generate a first electric field that imparts a drift velocity to the material; and a plurality of charged AC electrodes oriented substantially peripheral to the gas stream and normal to the flow of the gas stream, wherein the charged AC electrodes generates a second electric field that imparts additional three-dimensional motion to the material., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent

- Dynamic and Contemporary Science Fair Projects for Chicago Public Schools (Semester Unknown) IPRO 330
- The primary purpose of the Interprofessional Project (IPRO) 330 team is to promote the study of mathematics and the sciences amongst Chicago Public School (CPS) students. We intend to achieve this goal primarily by enhancing the website sciencefair.math.iit.edu and by interacting directly with CPS students, educators, and administrators. The website, entitled Science Fair Extravaganza, is already fully functional thanks to the efforts of previous IPRO 330 groups. Our team aims to further improve and publicize this website. To improve the website we will be addressing suggestions given by CPS teachers and students as well as outside education professionals in an effort to provide a high quality and useful project. The success of our IPRO will be assessed by increasing the number of daily hits received by Science Fair Extravaganza and by positive direct interaction with CPS students., Deliverables

- Innovating Process Improvements in Manufacturing Operations (Semester Unknown) IPRO 304
- The purpose of this IPRO is to develop a robust, working prototype that can automatically monitor and detect a problem with a milling machine at A. FInkl & Sons Co. This IPRO is in its fourth semester and there are two challenges remaining: (1) alerting management to the detection of broken teeth during machining; and (2) developing spatial representations of items undergoing heat treatment. However, A. Finkl & Sons has asked us to concentrate solely on the goal of finding a way to detect when a break occurs in one of the milling teeth and then alert the mechanic monitoring the machine in order to replace it. This system will involve measuring vibrations using an accelerometer or by the use of laser detection. The goal of this IPRO is to research, test, and inform A. FInkl & Sons of the best solution to invest in, therefore they can decide what is better for their company., Sponsorship: A. Finkl & Sons Co., Deliverables

- Designing Affordable Housing and Olympic Village out of Shipping Containers for Chicago (Semester Unknown) IPRO 339
- As the deadline for determining which city will host the 2016 Olympics draws near, Chicago, along with Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo is trying to prove that it should be selected as the Host City. If on October 2nd Chicago is chosen as the Host City for the 2016 Olympics, it will face the enormous task of providing temporary housing for all Olympics and Paralympics participants, including athletes, coaches, organizers and media reporters. Building upon the previous two semesters, our IPRO is proposing an economical and environmentally friendly solution to this challenge. We propose to utilize thousands of old shipping containers that are cluttering up shipping yards all over the Chicago-land area and convert them into a more cost effective alternative to traditional housing units. Since Chicago’s motto for the 2016 Olympics is “the Blue Green Olympics,” which references the way Chicago prides itself in creating sustainable I P R O 3 3 9 solutions, our proposal would only enhance our chances of being selected as the Host City in addition to being a city that thinks “outside of the box.”, Deliverables
