- Developing a document Control Sytem (Semester Unknown) IPRO 347
- The IPRO 347 team is being sponsored by Abrasive Form to lead the company into a paperless form of tracking projects. Abrasive Form currently uses a paper folder, which they call the “job folder” to hold all the important documents for completing incoming projects. This job folder travels along with the pieces of the project until the project is completed. Once a project has been completed, and the final product is shipped out, the job folder for that project is then kept in an on-site filling cabinet. So far this has led to several problems for Abrasive Form. As the company is increasing in size and completing increasing amounts of projects, they have had to dedicate a large portion of their offices to the storing of old job files. Abrasive Form keeps all of their completed job folders to ensure that all liability for the company is covered, and whenever necessary throughout the lifespan of completed projects in the field, Abrasive Form is able to prove that their work was of the quality that was requested. This has also lead to a lot of time being wasted by the employees of Abrasive Form traveling to the back offices where the job folders are held to look up information. The IPRO 347 team will be helping Abrasive Form come up with a solution to this very serious problem. The solution generated thus far is to scan all the documents contained within the paper job folders into PDF form, and use a digital filing program (such as Bugzilla which is a free open source program) to organize the PDF files into sub folders, and allow for quick referencing based on critical criteria such as the job number, part number, customer name, or part number. All this information would then be contained in a single server that can be accessed on any computer throughout the company through an internal network., Sponsorship: Abrasive-Form, Deliverables

- Apparatus for Electrode Heating of Earth for Recovery of Subsurface Volatiles and Semi-Volatiles
- Improved methods and apparatus are disclosed for confining ohmic heating currents to a subsurface formation in the use of in situ ohmic heating for recovery of volatile and semi-volatile materials, such as hazardous waste, hydrocarbon-like materials, and valuable minerals having thermally responsive properties. Spacing between emplaced electrodes and the number of electrodes employed are controlled to cause coupling between electrodes for more uniform and higher temperature heating. Electrode designs are disclosed which suppress spurious earth currents which would heat other formations not of interest. Suppression of electrode end currents is accomplished by the use of distinct rings of insulation, control of the applied potential along the electrode, and injection or withdrawal of fluids at distinct locations along the electrode., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent

- Channel Indexing System with Manual or Automatic Operation and with Manual Fine Adjustment
- In the illustrated embodiments a rotary head indexing cam has a power drive train releasably coupled therewith for automatic head indexing with a manual channel selector driven by the power drive train during automatic indexing while being manually operable to select a given channel independently of the drive train. A fine channel adjustment control is operable to shift the indexing cam axially for fine adjustment of head position relative to a selected channel. A latch retaining the capstan drive in operating position is mechanically released as the head completes scanning of a succession of chennels (sic) on the record tape. Capstan pressure rollers on hinged arms are swung through an open end of an endless loop cartridge to engage the record tape with the capstan, a predetermined bias being applied to the pressure rollers to press the same toward the capstan in the operating position., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent

- Power Measurement for Road Bicycles: Towards a Universal Solution (Semester Unknown) IPRO 324
- We would like to develop a system that measures the applied torque at a bicycle crank set. In contrast to current solutions, we want to be able to retrofit our system to existing crank sets, obviating the need to abandon parts that the bicyclist already owns. In principle, according to preliminary tests performed at the MMAE department, this can be done using sets of quite inexpensive strain gauges. However, being able to get accurate torque measurements will require some advanced signal processing from the strain gauges. These signals can then be transmitted wirelessly to a bicycle computer like the Edge 705 that the global positioning system corporation Garmin released last year. There is a defined wireless protocol, called ANT+Sport, which has been developed specifically for the purpose of transmitting exercise data, such as power output or heart rate, to small computers. Chipsets and development kits for this protocol are also available commercially. Therefore, our task will be to find an optimal configuration of strain gauges that will be attached to the crank set, and to develop an algorithm to process the strain gauge data in order to isolate a signal that is proportional to the applied torque. This signal will then be transmitted to the bicycle computer for display and storage., Deliverables

- Multivariable MPC system performance assessment, monitoring, and diagnosis
- This study focuses on performance assessment and monitoring of model predictive control systems. A methodology is proposed to determine a benchmark and monitor model predictive control performance on-line. A performance measure based on the ratio of historical and achieved performance is used for monitoring and a ratio of design and achieved performance is used for diagnosis. Performance monitoring and diagnosis of causes for poor performance are integrated. A real-time knowledge-based system is developed to supervise monitoring and diagnosis activities. Case studies with linear and nonlinear models of an evaporator illustrate the methodology and limitations of linearity assumptions., Endnote format citation for DOI:10.1016/j.jprocont.2003.07.003

- HawkTour (semester?), IPRO 305
- The Spring 2005 IPRO 305 team will be continuing the efforts of ongoing research at IIT in the realm of Pervasive Computing. The team will be focusing on the challenge of integrating Pervasive Computing into a specific aspect of the IIT campus. The overall vision of the IPRO 305 team is to continue efforts to develop an application called HawkTour – a virtual Illinois Institute of Technology tour guide. HawkTour will provide a completely new approach to the campus tour at IIT. The application has been designed to run on Tablet PC’s or other devices with similar computing capabilities, and provides the user with general campus information while guiding the user around campus and maintaining complete awareness of the user’s current location and intent, thereby adapting the tour to the user’s own personal preferences. The objective for this semester’s team is to refine the application and come up with a new version with an optimized content database, a more sophisticated hardware interface, improve the mapping methodology, work on the user interface and scale of the application to simpler devices such as cell phones and personal digital assistants., Sponsorship: ekahau, Deliverables for IPRO 305: HawkTour for the Spring 2005 semester

- A Recyclables Business Model for IIT (Semester Unknown) EnPRO 352
- contain the employees necessary to run and maintain the multiple programs which will be controlled by the Student Recycling Business. This business will also be in charge of creating events which will help to get the students, staff and faculty of IIT more involved in the recycling process. For prolonged success, the marketing component of any business plan is possibly one of the most essential. Within a student-run business, the need for campus support is enough motivation to implement an effective marketing strategy to advertise the products and gain an appropriate reputation. In terms of recycling, to achieve desired results for a specific objective requires that the target audience is fully informed. Thus, an awareness campaign must be introduced before any expected business success is observed. As shown by the provided data, the large diversity on campus has and most likely will always remain a unique attribute of IIT. Not only do the ethnicity and gender size vary from one category to the next, but the large demographic range (age) that is not presented due to unattainable information is also a significant factor in target marketing. Having language barriers and large generational gaps makes it difficult to impose a single marketing strategy all over campus. A successful marketing plan will overcome these obstacles with ideas that integrate all backgrounds and avoid cultural seclusion., Sponsorship: IIT, Deliverables

- Multivariate statistical methods for monitoring continuous processes: Assessment of discrimination power of disturbance models and diagnosis of multiple disturbances
- A new methodology was reported [1,2] for integrated use of principal components analysis (PCA) and discriminant analysis in order to determine out-of-control status of a continuous process and to diagnose the source causes for abnormal behavior. Most of the disturbances were identified with good rates of success, with a higher success rate for step or ramp type of disturbances. Quantitative tools that evaluate overlap and similarity between high-dimensional PCA models are proposed in this communication, and their implications on determining the discrimination power of PCA models of processes operating under disturbances are discussed. Diagnosis of several disturbances occurring simultaneously is also investigated. The criterion developed provide upper limits of discrimination power of various single and multiple process disturbances. The techniques developed are illustrated by assessing the process described by the Tennessee Eastman Control Challenge problem [3]., Endnote format citation
