- FORCED PERIODIC CONTROL OF AN EXOTHERMIC CSTR WITH MULTIPLE INPUT OSCILLATIONS
- Interaction among various oscillating inputs may result in significant modifications in the behavior of a system under forced periodic control. Forced oscillations in the input flow rate and input concentrations of an exothermic continuous stirred tank reactor enable the stabilized operation of the CSTR in the unstable steady state region. Reactor temperature oscillations under forced periodic control are similar to the oscillations resulting from proportional-integral feedback or nonlinear (push-pull) feedback control, and under some operating conditions the oscillation amplitude is significantly lower. Theoretical and experimental studies illustrate the effects of forcing frequency and phase shift on reactor behavior., Endnote format citation

- Synthetic Biology: Engineering a Novel Organism (semester?), IPRO 302
- Synthetic biology is a relatively new approach to genetic research where the focus is to build a simple genetic system with known processes and test it in a biological setting. This is in contrast to the reductionist approach where a complex pre-existing biological system is analyzed in an attempt to discover the purpose of each of the parts. In this IPRO, a very simple genetic system is being designed, built, and tested in a biological setting. Previous semesters have already accomplished such in bacteria. This semester's focus will be on building the system designed last semester and inserting it into an eukaryotic organism; the zebrafish. The main purpose of this IPRO is to advance the knowledge of biological systems and their manipulation. This is being done through the design and creation of a simple, but novel, genetic circuit, and the introduction of this circuit into an organism to observe its properties in vivo. In order to accomplish this goal, we have split up into 4 different sub-teams: Fish, Math Modeling, Futures and Design, and Construction, Deliverables for IPRO 302: Synthetic Biology: Engineering a Novel Organism for the Spring 2007 semester

- Building Consumer Awareness and Preference for Safe Foods (Semester Unknown) IPRO 336
- The IPRO 336 team is working with National Pasteurized Eggs, Inc. to create and test a new marketing strategy for the Davidson’s brand pasteurized eggs. Pasteurized eggs are a reasonably new product in the egg industry and, as of yet, have not gained a large percentage of retail market sales. Pasteurized eggs are comparable in many aspects to their competitors but offer the added advantage of being virtually bacteria and salmonella free. Due to this fact, Davidson’s eggs have grown exponentially in the food service market, especially for hospitals and other locations catering to at-risk groups. The company is now seeking to expand in the retail market and is looking to revise their current marketing strategy to meet this goal, with the help of the IPRO team. After an initial review, the IPRO group split up into sub-groups that will focus on different aspects of the marketing plan, including Consumer Education/Psychology, Competitor Analysis, Display, Packaging/Labeling, Promotions, and Website Improvements. Through both secondary and primary research (in the form of consumer surveys), these groups will gain an understanding of the egg market, the average egg buyer, and how the marketing strategy can be most efficiently revised. Once the research has been completed, the sub-groups will be able to create a design or marketing technique in their area of improvement, test their ideas, and revise as necessary. The IPRO group is seeking a final product that will boost retail sales of Davidson’s pasteurized egg and increase consumer awareness of the large benefits of such a product., Deliverables

- Kaon Freeze-out Dynamics in √sNN=200 GeV Au+Au Collisions at RHIC
- Measurements of three-dimensional correlation functions of like-sign low transverse momentum kaon pairs from Au+Au collisions at top RHIC energy √sNN =200 GeV are presented. The extracted kaon source function is narrower than the pion one and does not have the long tail along the pair transverse momentum direction. This indicates a much smaller role of long-lived resonance decays and/or of the emission duration on kaon emission. Three-dimensional Gaussian shape of the kaon source function can be adequately reproduced by Therminator simulations with resonance contributions taken into account. Comparison to pion data at the same energy reveals that the kaon Gaussian radii in the outward and sideward directions scale with the transverse mass mT. In the longitudinal direction, unlike at lower SPS energies, the Gaussian radii do not seem to follow the exact mT scaling between kaons and pions., Sponsorship: IIT College of Science, High Energy Physics Division of Argonne National Laboratory

- Sustainable Village (semester?), IPRO 301
- The team working on this project has set itself three major objectives. Firstly it strives to create a comprehensive and in-depth database containing valuable information concerning sustainability. This database should be user-friendly and intuitively presented so people who are interested in sustainability are quickly educated with the key points and have easy access to relevant and high quality references and further readings. The second objective of this project essentially consists of creating a roadmap and master plan on how to make Illinois Institute of Technology’s (IIT) Main Campus sustainable. This will be done by auditing and then benchmarking IIT to other similar projects. This roadmap and master plan will be developed with the vision that once implemented IIT will be a leader in sustainability and encourage many others to follow our track. Lastly the third objective is to create a house of the future. The house of the future has many objectives for itself. It should incorporate current design possibilities and make use of various available technologies to be sustainable and energy efficient among other things. This house should attract the public and educate them how easily sustainability can be achieved using current technology and knowledge at a competitive price., Deliverables for IPRO 301: Sustainable Village for the spring 2005 semester

- Robbins Community Power (RCP) (Semester Unknown) IPRO 347: RCPIPRO347ProjectPlanSu10
- The IPRO 347 team intends to seize the opportunity given by Robbins Community Power (RCP) to improve the efficiency of the power plant. RCP plans to convert the facility from its original role as an incinerator into a wood biomass electricity plant. Working with RCP, the team will look at thermodynamic values to determine how to best utilize the excess heat generated from the boiler that currently radiates out the cooling towers. Additionally, the team will research and discuss possible solutions to be implemented on the 22 acre site. The intricacies that arise from the nontraditional nature of our plan require we split into two groups. One sub-team will look into exactly where the waste heat exists and the values of viable energy available in the form of steam or hot water. This team will seek interdisciplinary advice as part of the energy analysis. The second, but most influential, sub-team will predominantly be researching feasible outlets for the recovered energy. Some solutions they will pursue include supplying nearby greenhouses with CO2, providing on-site and local heat, and increasing the efficiency of the plant through drying processes. - Process to Allocate Channels in a Sectorized and Tiered Cellular Network
- The invention disclosed is a process to allocate channels in a sectorized and tiered cellular network. A system of allocating cellular frequencies (channels) to the sectors among the outer tier of cells within a tile is disclosed which maximizes channel set usage within the tile while minimizing co-channel interference between cells. Any unused, or remaining, frequencies for the outer tier of that cell may then be allocated to an inner tier of the cell that has not had a channel allocated thereto. No additional infrastructure or maintenance set-up is required under this technique for allocating the channel to the additional transceiver and a very high degree of channel utilization is achieved., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent, Primary US Patent Classification 455/450, US Patent Classification 455/447, US Patent Classification 455/63.4, US Patent Classification 455/63.1, US Patent Classification 455/422.1, US Patent Classification 455/446, US Patent Classification 455/67.11, US Patent Classification 455/509, US Patent Classification 455/524, International Patent Classification H04W72/00

- Implantable Drug Delivery Apparatus
- An implantable drug delivery apparatus including a housing that has a housing chamber. An outer deformable body having a reserve chamber is mounted within the housing chamber. An inner deformable body having a dispensing chamber is mounted within the reserve chamber. A dispensing valve is actuated to an open position to allow a fluidic drug to flow from the dispensing chamber, through the dispensing valve and through a catheter into a body of a patient. The fluidic drug is discharged from the dispensing chamber at a dispensing mass flowrate which is greater than a refilling mass flowrate of the fluidic drug passing from the reserve chamber to the dispensing chamber, when the dispensing valve is in an open position. When the dispensing valve is in a closed position, the fluidic drug is prevented from discharging from the dispensing chamber while a recharging amount of the fluidic drug is capable of flowing from the reserve chamber to the dispensing chamber, until the dispensing chamber is at least partially filled. The outer deformable body is normally forced or urged in a direction or manner that tends to reduce a volume of the reserve chamber., Sponsorship: Illinois institute of Technology, United States Patent

- Power Measurement for Road Bicycles: Towards a Universal Solution (Semester Unknown) IPRO 324
- We would like to develop a system that measures the applied torque at a bicycle crank set. In contrast to current solutions, we want to be able to retrofit our system to existing crank sets, obviating the need to abandon parts that the bicyclist already owns. In principle, according to preliminary tests performed at the MMAE department, this can be done using sets of quite inexpensive strain gauges. However, being able to get accurate torque measurements will require some advanced processing of signals from the strain gauges. These signals can then be transmitted wirelessly to a bicycle computer like the Edge 705 that the global positioning system corporation Garmin released this spring. There is a defined wireless protocol, called ANT+Sport, which has been developed specifically for the purpose of transmitting exercise data, such as power output or heart rate, to small computers. Chipsets and development kits for this protocol are also available commercially. Therefore, our task will be to find an optimal configuration of strain gauges that will be attached to the crank set, and to develop an algorithm to process the strain gauge data in order to isolate a signal that is proportional to the applied torque. This signal will then be transmitted to the bicycle computer for display and storage, Deliverables

- Method for Detecting a Mass Density Image of an Object
- A method for detecting a mass density image of an object. An x-ray beam is transmitted through the object and a transmitted beam is emitted from the object. The transmitted beam is directed at an angle of incidence upon a crystal analyzer. A diffracted beam is emitted from the crystal analyzer onto a detector and digitized. A first image of the object is detected from the diffracted beam emitted from the crystal analyzer when positioned at a first angular position. A second image of the object is detected from the diffracted beam emitted from the crystal analyzer when positioned at a second angular position. A refraction image is obtained and a regularized mathematical inversion algorithm is applied to the refraction image to obtain a mass density image., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent
