A longer term objective is to incorporate adaptive measure so that noise cancellation and sound-level optimization can be realized., Sponsorship: Shure Inc., Project plan for IPRO 344: Energy Effciency and Audio Quality in Mobile Devices and Intercom Systems for the fall 2009 semester
Video Recording System
In the disclosed embodiments the video signal is recorded on successive longitudinal tracks with high frequency bias. The sound may be recorded transversely on adjacent tracks or may be recorded with the video as pulse modulation in the horizontal blanking intervals. The video bias frequency is selected so as to avoid beat notes with the video signal. The horizontal and vertical sync signals may be amplified separate from the composite video and then added thereto so as to record sync signals of increased amplitude. The picture signal from a television receiver may be recorded without further amplification., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent

Recent Results from RHIC
The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has opened a new era in experimental nuclear physics. Among the most important discoveries of this new era are the jet quenching phenomenon, the energy loss suffered by a hard scattered parton traversing the medium, and the collective flow, approaching the limit of ideal hydrodynamics. RHIC experiments have introduced a number of novel correlation methods for studies of jets and jet-medium interactions in the high multiplicity environment of ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. The di- and multi-hadron correlation techniques have since been quintessential to the understanding of the properties of the created medium in many complementary ways. In this work selected recent results are presented for the RHIC’s top energy collisions at 200 GeV. Di-hadron correlation measurements from Au–Au collisions, illuminating the properties of the hot nuclear medium, are confronted with the recent findings from d–Au data at the same energy. Understanding of initial state properties and collision evolution is tested by unexpected similarities in the di-hadron correlation measurements between the two systems., Sponsorship: IIT College of Science, High Energy Physics Division of Argonne National Laboratory

Intermodal Container Transport (Semester Unknown) IPRO 307
Intermodal Container Transport (Semester Unknown) IPRO 307
The direction IPro 307 “Intermodal Container Transport” is taking for the 2008 semester is geared toward alternative energy technologies as well as expansion of the capacity and efficiency of a designated rail transfer yard. The selected exploration site is the Norfolk Southern rail transfer yard at 47th street near the Dan Ryan Expressway. Since there is a large amount of on-site equipment (Mi-Jack side loaders, cranes, and yard hostlers), the possibility of introducing alternative fuel technologies exists and can provide a cleaner and more cost-effective solution to air pollution and rising fuel costs. The group will be focusing efforts on using wind power in parallel with compressed natural gas as an alternative fuel, as well as designing innovative ways to improve yard capacity and efficiency. The ultimate goal of this IPro is to develop a plan to increase yard efficiency and output, while at the same time incorporating green technology as an alternative energy source for the facility equipment., Deliverables

Apparatus and Method for Precise Angular Positioning
An apparatus and method for precise angular positioning of an object. A first pivot arm and a second pivot arm each is pivotally mounted with respect to a base. A pivot base flex member is operatively connected to the first pivot arm and allows the first pivot arm to pivot with respect to the base, within a particular plane. A second pivot base flex member is operatively connected to the second pivot arm and allows the second pivot arm to pivot with respect to the base, and also within either the same plane or a different plane as the plane within which the first pivot arm pivots. Support structures maintain each of the first pivot arm and the second pivot arm within the particular plane or planes. An interconnect flex member connects the first pivot arm and the second pivot arm. With a relatively small base and thus overall apparatus, an input movement, such as a linear input of about 10 mm can be translated into an output movement of about 7200 radians., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent

Small-Scale Desalination (Semester Unknown) EnPRO 354
Freshwater is one of Earth’s most precious resources and is now increasing in scarcity. Global warming induced climate change is now changing rain patterns and causing record drought, growing global populations are increasing demand, and the individual demand per person is increasing and human populations urbanize and adopt modern plumbing. The biggest contributor to increasing demand for water is mismanagement and pollution. However for this project we will be focusing on water quantity rather than quality., Deliverables
Zoo Tech (Semester Unknown) IPRO 318
Zoo Tech (Semester Unknown) IPRO 318
Do you love the zoo? Do you wish you could see all of the animals and learn about them too in just one easy visit? Our IPRO team is creating an iPhone application to do just that. We’re working with the Brookfield Zoo education staff and animal researchers to develop a guided inquiry process that will assist users in finding and identifying animals. Getting closer to an animal is a breeze. Because the animals’ locations are mapped, you can find them easily on foot or identify them by their color, pattern, and shape. Learn fun facts about any animal you choose while watching videos and scrolling through pictures. We’re working to create the best tour guide for the zoo that fits in your pocket., Sponsorship: Brookfield Zoo, Deliverables

Energy-Efficient Electromagnetic Elimination of Noxious Biological Organisms
An energy-efficient method for killing noxious biological organisms (bacteria, insects, etc.) in contaminated materials ranging from liquid, semi-liquid, and solid foods pharmaceuticals and hospital wastes comprises passing the contaminated material through an exposure chamber; screening, comminution, addition of fluid or foam, limited heating, or other pretreatment steps may be required. As it flows through the exposure chamber the contaminated material is subjected to a nonuniform, high-intensity electric field; in that chamber, excessive current flows, including arcing and current "streamers", are suppressed by limiting the current density. The amplitude of the applied current density and the electric field in the exposure chamber are controlled, in accordance with the conductivity and/or dielectric constant of the contaminated material, so that the electric field intensity is of the order of 3,000 volts/centimeter or more., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent

Zero Energy Lab (Semester Unknown) IPRO 337
The IPRO 337 team’s objectives for this semester is to make further progress in updating the top floor of Machinery Hall into a lab for future energy and lighting technology research and for the space itself to be able to be as sustainable as possible throughout research this semester. Since the end goal is a rather ambitious one, a more realistic goal is to have an energy plan for following IPRO’s to work off of and to have the space cleared so that the developed plan can be tested. The team hopes to generate willingness in its members to establish an environment conducive to team-oriented goals, as outlined in the objectives below. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically sustainable energy systems. For this fall semester, the team has set forth the following objectives:  Research office utilities that consume low amounts of energy, and investigate how to improve the efficiency of current utilities.  Research and test various energy efficient lighting solutions.  Research environmentally friendly floor, wall, and ceiling finishes along with necessary office furniture.  Develop a website to display the development progress of the Zero-Energy Lab and provide information regarding “green technology”  Clean and prepare the 6,000 ft2 space for future inhabitants.  Using the research, develop a program proposal for the Zero-Energy Lab., Deliverables
