Swimming Aid for Visually Impaired Swimmers (Semester Unknown) IPRO 310
Swimming Aid for Visually Impaired Swimmers (Semester Unknown) IPRO 310
This project aims to help visually impaired individuals to exercise independently. While the primary focus this semester will be enabling visually impaired swimmers to swim independently, other physical activities will be researched for the purpose of choosing three activities to be considered for future projects. A passive device, which is a mechanically-based device that offers tactile feedback to the swimmer, and an active device, which is a sonarbased device, will both be developed in parallel to aid the swimmers. This project, overall, could potentially increase the independence of blind and visually impaired individuals, as well as improve their quality of life., Deliverables

he proliferation of the Internet in recent years has led to more people using, and being confused by, computer interfaces. Usability testing is a formal laboratory procedure used to identify problems with user interfaces during the development of a product. It involves creating tasks for users to accomplish and watching whether they can complete the given tasks. More importantly, the testers observe how users interact with the interface in an attempt to understand why they perform the actions they do. The testing allows developers to identify issues with their designs early enough in the product development cycle to be able to change them, saving money and resources later, in addition to creating an easier-to-use product. Unfortunately, many companies do not implement usability testing or do so too late into development to make any substantive changes suggested by the testing. The result is often a product that is needlessly hard to use. The team will conduct usability tests during the semester to gain first-hand experience in all aspects of usability testing. This project will test the interfaces of products produced by other IPROs and will work closely with other teams to identify and address issues arising from their work so that students on this team and others can appreciate the value of usability testing and designing with the end users in mind., Sponsorship: Illinois Secretary of State, Project Plan for IPRO 329: CreditSafe for the Spring 2003 semester
Energy and Environment Based Architectural Research & Development (Spring 2003) IPRO 323: Energy and Environment Based Architectural Research and Development IPRO323 Spring 2003 Final Presentation
The goal of this IPRO research/design project is to establish an ongoing energy-based architectural studio. The studio will focus on a specific project, but in an investigative and experimental manner. The selected project is the Trump Tower, currently under design in the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP. The end result of each project is expected to consist of cutting edge architectural solution, which will help provide insight into methods for integrating environmental concerns into architectural design process. The IPRO team will apply the concept of the Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) system, particularly in applications used for exterior wall systems. Also wind energy will be introduced. During the semester students will be directed focusing on extensive research, data collection, elements and component design, putting this research information together and work towards a total building design. The studio will benefit from previous experiences which can be accessed http://ipro.iit.edu/~323. This project will be run in consultation with Professors Professors Mohammadi (CAE), Megri (CAE), Al Hallaj (CHEE), and faculty from mechanical engineering to be determined. The project also benefits from participation by partners Peter Ellis and Ray Clark from the firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP., Sponsorship: Skidmore, Owings & Merill LLP, Project Plan for IPRO 323: Energy and Environment Based Architectural Research & Development for Spring 2003 semester

Calamos Investments provides professional money management services to major corporations, public and private institutions, pension funds, insurance companies and individuals and is an investment advisor to open-end and closed-end funds. The company was founded in 1977 by John Calamos. The company’s cornerstone strategy is risk management. Calamos Investments underwent rapid growth, from managing $5 billion in assets in 1999 to over $45 in 2006. During this period, a lot of the personal touch that permeated the interaction between clients and the company’s leadership was lost. The number of clients grew too quickly. A high level of personal interaction between John Calamos and its core investors became difficult to attain. The IPRO 303 team attempted to digitally leverage John Calamos by researching and piloting new methods of customer interaction utilizing digital communication technologies., Sponsorship: Calamos Investments LLC, Deliverables for IPRO 303: Podcasting, Market Research & Multimedia Pilots for the Spring 2006 semester

Our team desires to create a plan that enables living in a sustainable manner at an affordable price. To do that, we are using a site in Evanston as the basis for a design that minimizes energy consumption while still being an attractive marketable solution to current home buyers within the city. Ideally we will design a model community which will challenge conventions within the fields of design, planning, engineering, and everyday living and also serve as an example to Chicago-area municipalities about the benefits of affordable sustainable planning and design., Deliverables
Offset Carrier Recording System & Method
An offset carrier longitudinal scan recording and reproducing system for television signals wherein an amplitude modulated video signal is derived from a television receiver and converted to an offset carrier with a full upper sideband and an attenuated vestigial lower sideband. A direct or offset carrier audio signal may be recorded on the same channel with the offset carrier video signal. During monitoring and playback, the offset carrier is heterodyned to a television broadcast frequency or intermediate frequency and coupled into the television receiver. The same receiver may simultaneously supply video I.F. and audio F.M. signals for recording, and monitor offset carrier audio and video signals supplied to the recording head to facilitate recording adjustments., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent

Inclusive measurements at HERA from low to high x
New inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) measurements are presented, obtained with the H1 and ZEUS detectors at HERA. The results comprise (flavour) inclusive DIS cross sections as well as inclusive charm production. In the area of inclusive DIS, both H1 and ZEUS completed last year their high Q2 Neutral and Charged current measurements exploiting the large statistics from the HERA II running period. For inclusive charm production, H1 and ZEUS published a combination of numerous existing measurements based on various tagging methods. Among other things a precise determination of the running charm quark mass mc(mc) was obtained from the combined data., Sponsorship: IIT College of Science, High Energy Physics Division of Argonne National Laboratory
Hierarchical Structured Data Organization System
A method in a data processing system and apparatus for organizing files or web pages, structured or unstructured, of multiple users stored across one or more server computers into hierarchical file structures on a recordable medium of a data processing system. A user-defined metalabel is assigned to each of the electronic files or web pages. The electronic files or web pages are organized as a function of the metalabels into the hierarchical file structures., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent

Method and Apparatus for Detecting Collisions on and Controlling Access to a Communications Channel
A nodal apparatus for sending and receiving digital data in multiple data slots has a transmitter for transmitting a request for multiple data slots during a control minislot. A conflict resolution queue representative of nodal apparatus sending substantially simultaneous requests for transmission resulting in a collision in a minislot is maintained and stored in a memory. A transmission queue representative of nodal apparatus that have successfully transmitted in a minislot and can be queued for data slot transmission is stored in memory. The transmitter sends multiple data slots signals comprising multiple slots of digital data in response to the transmission queue. A receiver receives multiple data slots signals comprising digital data. A high priority transmission queue may also be stored in memory., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent

Design of the Stadium (semester?), IPRO 335
Design of the Stadium (semester?), IPRO 335
This semester IPRO 335, Capstone Design, continues placing its efforts in designing the most innovative and creative architectural and structural design from senior undergraduate and graduate students. The same project from last semester, the New United Center, will be analyzed, explored, and redesigned in detail to meet new requirements. The primary goal in this semester long project is to implement the knowledge and new techniques learned at IIT along with the experience from individual members in order to create a unique and superior product. Most of the basic design was completed last semester; nevertheless there are many areas that must be designed or some portions that will be modified., Deliverables for IPRO 335: Design of the Stadium for the Fall 2006 semester
