Show morehe goal of this project is to create a functional workstation with a "virtual reality" primary interface that simulates three- dimensional space. This is to be based on publicly available software, namely, Linuxand Mesa GL, in order to provide an affordable for the average person. The three main parts of the project are to design a functional but attractive interface that simulates three-dimensional space, program the design into an "X" Windows window manager, interface some hardware device capable of providing an realistic means of control in 3D space - we are currently looking at a Nintendo Powerglove. This project requires students capable of and/or interested in learning to develop customized software programs, interfacing hardware and software, and balancing the need for processing complex graphical information against the need to keep the design simple, affordable and easily utilized by the average person. This project, initiated by a former CS student, Nate Burns, and carried forward by Bryan Smant, a current CPE student, benefits from a joint effort of students from computer science, electrical and computer engineering, design and architecture Show less
