Show moreWomen and men communicate differently in both face-to- face and computer-mediated environments. We study linguistic patterns considered gendered in reviews contributed to the Internet Movie Database. IMDb has been described as a male-majority community, in which females contribute fewer reviews and enjoy less prestige than males. Analyzing reviews posted by prolific males and females, we hypothesize that females adjust their communication styles to be in sync with their male counterparts. We find evidence that while certain characteristics of “female language” persevere over time (e.g., frequent use of pronouns) others (e.g., hedging) decrease with time. Surprisingly, we also find that males often increase their use of “female” features. Our results indicate, that even when they resemble men’s reviews linguistically, women’s reviews still enjoy less prestige and smaller audiences.

Show moreCurrent research on concussions indicates that both younger age and female gender are associated with a greater number of symptoms and a lengthier postconcussive recovery time. The aim of this research was to examine postconcussive symptoms (PCS) resulting from a sports-related concussion in both male and female children/adolescents. Data was collected using neuropsychology measures (Auditory Consonant Trigrams Test, Conners' Continuous Performance Test-2nd edition, Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing, Woodcock Johnson Tests of Achievement- Third Edition, and Behavior Assessment System for Children-2nd edition) and a neurological evaluation. Participants included 132 children/adolescents (10-18 years) who had sustained a sports-related concussion. Results indicated evidence of subtle, but clinically significant, impairments in executive functioning. This was particularly true for those with a premorbid attention, learning, and/or mood disorder. In addition, a history of previous concussions was associated with a higher number of reported cognitive PCS. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted for each of the dependent measures. As predicted, female gender was associated with increased executive dysfunction and a higher report of cognitive and emotional/behavioral PCS. Contrary to hypotheses, younger age was associated with less executive dysfunction and fewer reported cognitive PCS. No interaction between age and gender was identified. Implications of the findings are discussed.

Show moreEly, Ibarra, and Kolb (2011) theorize that the leader identity work among women is an area of work wherein subtle gender bias is pervasive and impacting women’s advancement in the workplace. Interferences with the leader identity development process not only impact how a woman views herself as a leader, but how others collectively come to endorse her as a leader. Simply observing an individual claiming leadership and having that leadership be granted by someone else is known to influence how an observer classifies an individual as a leader or a non-leader. This study examines how the gender of an individual claiming leadership impacts external perceptions of how leader-like they are to others, when they are granted vs. not granted leadership. To examine this gap, this study uses an experimental vignette methodology to explore the impact of gender on leadership perceptions, during a claiming and granting process. Specifically, this work examines the mediating roles of competence and likability, as potential drivers through which differences may occur. Though women today are evaluated as equally competent as their male counterparts, engaging in dominant, agentic, behaviors, may make them less likable, and rated less leader-like as a result. The results of this study did not find an interaction between gender and granting, on perceived likability. The results did replicate existing findings that claiming leadership is not enough to be relationally recognized as a leader, and that granting from others plays an important role in how competent, and subsequently leader-like, an individual is perceived to be.
