The prototypes now need to be developed into potential product form, beta tested, and evaluated both technically and from a market perspective. A patent application has been outlined. A business plan needs to be written that gathers the information required to decide on a commercial product offering to Union Tank Car as the first customer. A market survey should define the potential market within the railroad industry, the economics of such a business, and its potential in other related market segments, such as trucking. At the end of this Entrepreneurial IPRO, we should have beta tested the potential product. If the results are successful, manufacturers and suppliers should be identified to bring the product to market. A first sale offering should be made to Union Tank Car, assuming beta testing is successful. The possibility to formulate a successful business together with our first customer, Union Tank Car, will be evaluated. The team required to execute the business plan will be identified; and the.potential for financing will also be addressed. This entrepreneurial team would ideally consist of chemistry and chemical engineering students for sensor development work; mechanical and electrical engineering students for product engineering and production setup; business school and law school students to support business plan development, market analysis and patenting for the business.

Show moreThis study developed a shock waved diagram based deep learning model (SW-DLM) to predict the occurrence of public events in real-time according to their impacts on nearby highway traffic. Specifically, using point traffic volume data as a boundary condition, shock wave analysis is first conducted to understand the impacts and features of a public event on a nearby highway-ramp intersection. Next, this analysis develops the SWG algorithm to efficiently generate and expand shock wave diagrams in real-time according to the data collection rate. Built upon that, this study contributes a novel approach, which encodes a shock wave diagram with an optimal grid of pixels balancing resolution and computation load. Using the features extracted from encoded time-series shock wave diagrams as inputs, a deep learning approach, Long-short term memory (LSTM) model, is applied to predict the occurring of a public event. The numerical experiments based on the field data demonstrate that using encoded shock wave diagrams rather than point traffic data can significantly improve the accuracy of the deep learning for predicting the occurring of a public event. The SW-DLM presents satisfied prediction performance on the average as well as on an individual day with or without traffic accident interference, happening nearby the venue of a public event. The implementation of this approach to real-time traffic provision tools such as GPS will alert travelers en route on-going events in a transportation network and help travelers to make a smart trip plan and avoid traffic congestion. Moreover, it promotes smart city development by providing a strong capability to monitor the transportation system and conduct real-time traffic management intelligently.

Show moreAs cities have developed in response to a rapidly changing environment since the industrial revolution, a variety of circumstances and issues have arisen. In cities, technological development and the rise of private automobiles have been related to urban sprawl, traffic congestion, environmental degradation, and mobility inequalities. Currently, autonomous vehicles are bringing a paradigm shift in mobility as technological innovations accompany the fourth industrial revolution. As cities undergo renewal through new mobility, recent developments in driverless technologies should be considered for their long-term impact on the built environment. The purpose of this thesis is to propose a design, along with a set of scenarios, for a transportation hub in the era of autonomous vehicles to address today's complex mobility requirements. Through bringing together existing case studies, research on autonomous vehicles, and drawing conclusions regarding the relationship between mobility and urban landscapes, this thesis explores how autonomous vehicles will affect the future built environment in a set of timelines. Considering the future transportation hub will require programs and infrastructure to support autonomous vehicles, this thesis also provides a vision of the future of transportation modes and how they interact. Finally, a transportation hub design model and an automation city model for the AV era will be proposed.

Show moreIn recent years, bike as a travel mode is getting increasingly popular among large cities in the U.S. These cities also found promoting bike mode can potentially mitigate traffic congestion issues, reduce carbon emission and improve the quality of life for residents. Therefore, many cities-initiated bike-related programs promote the bike mode from all aspects, such as establishing a shared bike system and developing bike-related facilities. Specifically, bike lane installation is widely seen in large cities as a pivot component of bike promotion programs. Due to the installation of bike lanes on the existing network, vehicles’ safety and mobility performance may be affected due to the variation of facilities. This study attempts to propose a methodology to quantify the safety and mobility impacts on vehicles brought by bike lane installation. The proposed method accounts for safety impact by using predicted crashes in conjunction with field observed crash data for empirical Bayes (EB) before-after comparison group analysis. The mobility impact is captured by comparing the segment average travel time before and after the bike lane installation. Further, vehicle volume information is involved in the consumer surplus computation to quantify the variation in vehicle safety, and mobility performance resulting from the bike lane installation. A case study is conducted using a real data set from the city of Chicago bike lane program. The results reveal that the safety and mobility impacts vary mainly depending on the type of bike lane installed and location.

Show moreTransportation agencies in the United States nowadays rely on tax dollars for maintaining surface transportation infrastructure, which mainly comes from fuel tax. However, travel behaviors are changing every day. People and businesses demand better and safer roads. Yet, consumers travel in more fuel-efficient vehicles and buy less gas, which means less revenue for fixing aging roads and highways. Meanwhile, new construction and repair costs increase for our overburdened transportation systems. Transportation agencies, therefore, must use their limited funding more wisely to optimize the service performance and minimize risks (Li, 2018). The budget allocation problem in transportation is not an easy task. The consequences of an ineffective decision in allocating resources are multi-facet both in the short- and long-term, including degrading in the condition of transportation facilities, losing public trust, and increasing backlogs in maintenance and repair. Therefore, transportation agencies are seeking more robust and comprehensive data-driven strategies that take into account of agency’s strategic goals and regulatory requirements, user expectations, nature of the asset, availability of resources, and lifecycle cost analysis in determining the optimal allocation of resources and making the best use of available funds (Li and Sinha, 2004; Sinha and Labi, 2007). The proposed research aims to utilize the concept of multicriteria decision making coupled with a holistic asset management framework to support performance-based allocations of transportation budgets and help transportation agencies achieve the future vision of the nation’s strategic planning requirements to enable sustainable management of the system. A computational study for the real-world dataset obtained by a state Department of Transportation (DOT) is conducted using the proposed budget allocation method. The results from the computational study reveal that the proposed method can derive optimal decision solutions for transportation budget allocation problems and can be utilized by transportation agencies on different scales – urban and rural, in other sectors – public and private, to effectively manage the transportation infrastructure sustainably, by effectively spending transportation budget to maximize service performance and minimize operating costs.

Show moreSince signing the legally binding Paris agreement, governments have been striving to fulfill the decarbonization mission. To reduce carbon emissions from the transportation sector, countries around the world have created a well-defined new energy vehicle development strategy that is further expanding into hydrogen vehicle technologies. In this study, we develop the Transportation Energy Analysis Model (TEAM) to investigate the impact of the CO2 emissions policies on the future of the automotive industries. On the demand side, TEAM models the consumer choice considering the impacts of technology cost, energy cost, refueling/charging availability, consumer travel pattern. On the supply side, the module simulates the technology supply by the auto-industry with the objective of maximizing industry profit under the constraints of government policies. Therefore, we apply different optimization methods to guarantee reaching the optimal automotive industry response each year up to 2050. From developing an upgraded differential evolution algorithm, to applying response surface methodology to simply the objective function, the goal is to enhance the optimization performance and efficiency compared to adopting the standard genetic algorithm. Moreover, we investigate TEAM’s robustness by applying a sensitivity analysis to find the key parameters of the model. Finally based on the key sensitive parameters that drive the automotive industry, we develop a neural network to learn the market penetration model and predict the market shares in a competitive time by bypassing the total cost of ownership analysis and profit optimization. The central motivating hypothesis of this thesis is that modern optimization and modeling methods can be applied to obtain a computationally-efficient, industry-relevant model to predict optimal market sales shares for light-duty vehicle technologies. In fact, developing a robust market penetration model that is optimized using sophisticated methods is a crucial tool to automotive companies, as it quantifies consumer’s behavior and delivers the optimal way to maximize their profits by highlighting the vehicles technologies that they could invest in. In this work, we prove that TEAM reaches the global solution to optimize not only the industry profits but also the alternative fuels optimized blends such as synthetic fuels. The time complexity of the model has been substantially improved to decrease from hours using the genetic algorithm, to minutes using differential evolution, to milliseconds using neural network.

The application of simple models helps release the computational burdens brought by parameter estimation tasks in practice, but the cost is the unwanted properties of classic models such as the “symmetry property” that we argue is often undesirable in many fields. To some extent, the symmetry property of related models limits the shape of curves that makes the model fitting less flexible technically. This study addresses the following question: “Can discrete choice models with asymmetry property outperform classic models with symmetry property in forecasting travelers’ parking location choices?” The contributions of this study include: (1) providing a new perspective of using asymmetric discrete choice models to explain and forecast individual’s parking location choice; and (2) completing the travel demand forecasting process from choices of the destination zone centroid to the parking location, enabling parking choice forecasting. This provides a generalized framework to calibrate and validate asymmetric discrete choice models with the field observed parking facility-specific arrival profile data integrated into a large-scale, high-fidelity regional travel demand model. Further, an experimental study is conducted to compare the performance of the proposed asymmetric discrete choice models in the parking demand forecasting framework. The results suggest that asymmetric discrete choice models for individual’s parking choice modeling outperform the symmetric discrete choice models such as the logit models owing largely to their flexibility of parameter fitting and training using the available dataset.
