Show moreCapturing the momentary decisions and actions made by construction workers in response to workflow disruptions is challenging because, until now, there has not been a minimally-disruptive data collection method that allows workers to identify their decision process “in the moment.” However, an Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) method – designed to capture momentary work experiences in natural settings – can provide researchers with detailed information about the daily challenges experienced by workers during the course of performing their tasks. An explanation of the method is provided, along with examples of the types of research questions that can be addressed and appropriate analysis techniques. The EMA method is being used on a federally-funded research program in the United States that is investigating how construction workers adapt to workflow disruptions by improvising their decisions and actions. Consequently, this article demonstrates the use of the method by presenting an idiographic study of William, an electrical construction worker. The evaluation of William’s disruptions, decisions, and actions elucidated an important relationship: every one of William’s disruptions required an improvisational action in order to continue working. The EMA method opens the door to the development of new theories about rapid decisions and subsequent actions on construction sites.

Show moreDisordered eating attitudes and behavioral urges are prevalent in community samples and contribute to numerous negative physical and psychological outcomes. Using an ecological momentary assessment, this study examines how body dissatisfaction, perfectionism, and disordered eating relate to one another. Over the course of one week, women (n=49) with disordered eating completed multiple daily ratings of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating attitudes, urges and behaviors. Multilevel model analyses were used to test study hypotheses that; (1) body dissatisfaction prospectively predicts disordered eating attitudes and urges; and (2) perfectionism moderates the associations between body dissatisfaction and subsequent disordered eating attitudes and behaviors, such that individuals higher in perfectionism will report stronger associations between these variables. Results indicate that, in this sample, greater body dissatisfaction does not predict disordered eating attitudes, urges or behaviors. However, the interaction between increased body dissatisfaction and perfectionism predicted subsequent disordered eating attitudes and behavioral urges, but did not predict engagement in eating disorder behaviors. Results have important clinical and treatment implications for including perfectionism in the treatment of eating disorders.

Show moreThe goal of the present study was to use ecological momentary assessment to examine factors that predict aggression in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In particular, this study sought to investigate the situation-level and person-level factors that predict the severity of children’s aggressive episodes. At the situation-level, we predicted that children would show more severe aggression after experiencing a negative affective state. At the person-level, we hypothesized that children with better grammatical and pragmatic language abilities would demonstrate less severe aggressive behavior. In addition, we predicted that language abilities would moderate the association between negative affect and aggression. We were unable to test these hypotheses due to a floor effect in the outcome variable. Thus, we conducted a series of analyses to examine how variables of interest were associated with the presence of aggressive behavior. We found an association between negative affect and aggression, such that children who experienced higher levels of negative affect were more likely to engage in aggressive behavior. However, there was not a significant relationship between language abilities and the presence of aggression. In addition, there was no evidence for a moderation effect. Future studies should examine other variables that may moderate or mediate the association between negative affect and aggression in children with ASD.
