Show moreThe IPRO is pending to be sponsored by ComEd in order to research possible methods of energy conservation. The focus of this project is to design a system that encourages energy conserving behavior in residents by use of an interface that displays real time energy use of a residence. For this system to encourage conservation on a significant scale it is necessary that it can be installed in both new and existing buildings. The interface needs to give detailed enough data about the building’s energy consumption for the user to make well informed decisions of how to save energy, but at the same time the data must be presented in an easy to understand format. Also, the unit or units that provide the data must be accessible enough so that the user can at any time be aware of the impact that activating a certain device will have on energy consumption in their home.

Show moreThe batch scheduler is an important system software serving as the interface between users and HPC systems. Users submit their jobs via batch scheduling portal and the batch scheduler makes scheduling decision for each job based on its request for system resources and system availability. Jobs submitted to HPC systems are usually parallel applications and their lifecycle consists of multiple running phases, such as computation, communication and input/output data. Thus, the running of such parallel applications could involve various system resources, such as power, network bandwidth, I/O bandwidth, storage, etc. And most of these system resources are shared among concurrently running jobs. However, Today's batch schedulers do not take the contention and interference between jobs over these resources into consideration for making scheduling decisions, which has been identified as one of the major culprits for both the system and application performance variability. In this work, we propose a cooperative batch scheduling framework for HPC systems. The motivation of our work is to take important factors about jobs and the system, such as job power, job communication characteristics and network topology, for making orchestrated scheduling decisions to reduce the contention between concurrently running jobs and to alleviate the performance variability. Our contributions are the design and implementation of several coordinated scheduling models and algorithms for addressing some chronic issues in HPC systems. The proposed models and algorithms in this work have been evaluated by the means of simulation using workload traces and application communication traces collected from production HPC systems. Preliminary experimental results show that our models and algorithms can effectively improve the application and the system overall performance, HPC facilities' operation cost, and alleviate the performance variability caused by job interference.

Show moreThe scope of this study is focused on the applicability of the interval method to the reliability analysis of structures. The study includes using the traditional probability methods in several applications and comparing the results with the interval analysis. Accordingly, the interval arithmetic rules are applied in several examples and the results are compared with those from the traditional probability theory concepts. Specifically, the procedure for using the interval methods was applied to the development of the probability of failure for a simple structural member; and for a link in a network system. Through three simple examples, the research shows that the interval method offers comparable results with those from the traditional first-order reliability method. The procedure based on the interval method, however, may offer advantages, especially in cases where the uncertainties in various parameters describing the reliability of a system are large. In the presence of large uncertainties, the traditional methods of reliability analysis, based on the first order approximation, may lose their accuracy. In these cases, the interval method may offer a simple method yet with more accurate results.

The primary focus this semester will be to create visibility for urban wood through the connection of products made from urban wood to the end users. The primary drawback for urban wood is the perception of “no value” attached to the wood, which results in an epidemic of wasted wood, since nobody wants to use it. Its current platform for use however requires the user to utilize a handheld device and direct his/her frame of view to a screen. In many situations there is a need to have eyes on and full awareness of surroundings, something that simply can't be done while holding and viewing a handheld device. To solve this dilemma, team Smart Specs has integrated ideas of GPS, heads-up displays, and datalink technology to form a design that will give the user full hands free capabilities. This device, worn like glasses, allows the user to track objects and even designate objects to be tracked, which are all shown through heads-up display.

Coal City is located just south of I-80 along the I- 55 corridor and less than an hour from Bolingbrook and Oakbrook. Show moreThe IPRO 337 team’s objectives for this semester is to make further progress in updating the top floor of Machinery Hall into a lab for future energy and lighting technology research and for the space itself to be able to be as sustainable as possible throughout research this semester. Since the end goal is a rather ambitious one, a more realistic goal is to have an energy plan for following IPRO’s to work off of and to have the space cleared so that the developed plan can be tested. The team hopes to generate willingness in its members to establish an environment conducive to team-oriented goals, as outlined in the objectives below. Successful completion of the goals presented here will require each participant to gain useful experience and knowledge regarding teamwork, inter-professional skills and specifically sustainable energy systems. For this fall semester, the team has set forth the following objectives:  Research office utilities that consume low amounts of energy, and investigate how to improve the efficiency of current utilities.  Research and test various energy efficient lighting solutions.  Research environmentally friendly floor, wall, and ceiling finishes along with necessary office furniture.  Develop a website to display the development progress of the Zero-Energy Lab and provide information regarding “green technology”  Clean and prepare the 6,000 ft2 space for future inhabitants.  Using the research, develop a program proposal for the Zero-Energy Lab.

Show moreCAPTCHAs (Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart) are used to prevent automated access to sensitive information online. In its usual format, users are presented with distorted text and asked to enter the displayed text in an answer box. If successful, humans, but not computers, will be able to interpret the distorted text. Another format of CAPTCHAs asks users to identify audio information (usually a string of digits or phrase of words) that has been distorted or placed against a background of noise (\white" noise, reversed speech, etc.). Users type the words they hear into an answer box. The audio format is intended to be accessible to blind and low-vision users who cannot use the visually-based format. Unfortunately, audio CAPTCHAs are di cult for humans to use (Bigham and Cavendar 2009) but relatively easy for computers to solve (Tam et al. 2008), which is exactly the opposite outcome desired. To take two extreme examples, in one recent study (Sauer et al. 2008), users were able to solve only 46 percent of audio CAPTCHAs, while in another study (Burztein and Bethard 2009), a computer program was able to break 75 percent of audio CAPTCHAs. At issue is whether audio CAPTCHAs can be designed so that users can easily solve them but computers cannot. Yan and Ahmad (2008) propose testing di erent kinds of background noise to determine which is the most e ective at blocking computers but admitting humans. To this end, Tam et al. (2008) suggest using other human voices as background noise (to thwart computers) but familiar phrases as the string to decode (to aid listeners). The current project will focus on selecting from a set of potential solutions to test.

By creating key room components, existing homes can expand outward to provide additional rooms for current family members, for older generations moving back home and/or for additional rental spaces as a way to supplement income. The end result creates unique spaces and courtyards that places the resident much closer to nature.
