Show morePower amplifier (PA) is the most important circuit block in an RF transmitter. It typically consumes more than 80% of the power taken by the entire transmitter. Therefore, a highly efficient PA is the key to a successful RF front-end system. The polar transmitter architecture is studied herein in order to take advantage of the highly efficient switching-mode PA. However, due to the large expanded bandwidth from the nonlinear IQ to polar conversion and the sensitive amplitude/phase delay impairment, hardly any reported polar design is able to transmit high data rate wireless communication signals. In this work, an extensive research on the digital polar transmitter system for high data rate signals is presented. An integrated CMOS digital power am- plifier (DPA) design is demonstrated afterwards. This DPA consists of 9-bit fully thermometer-coded uniform cells to achieve high linearity for wide bandwidth OFDM signals. By analyzing the amplitude and phase paths impairment, which will cause both in-band and out-of-band distortions, a 960 MHz digital delay tuner is designed for precise amplitude and phase alignment. Furthermore, two digital pre-distortion algorithms for DPA are implemented and compared. Importantly, an on-chip DC- DC converter is included for direct battery connection and power control. A boosted cascode gate bias improves PA efficiency at the low power region. The proposed design is fabricated using a 55 nm RF CMOS technology. The DPA with several peripheral blocks occupies only 0.63 mm2 active silicon area. This DPA including the digital AM filtering achieves a peak output power of +21.9 dBm with 41% efficiency. It achieves EVM of 2.9% with 20 MHz IEEE 802.11ac compliance of 256-QAM OFDM signals, and also achieves EVM of 4.5% (CC0) / 4.8% (CC1) with 2 x 20 MHz 3GPP LTE-Advanced carrier aggregation compliance of 64-QAM OFDM signals. This highly linear DPA has demonstrated high flexibility, high efficiency, and small area. To the author's knowledge, this is the first reported DPA that meets either the linearity requirements of 256-QAM OFDM signals or the signal bandwidth of 40 MHz, paving the path for wideband high data rate wireless applications using digital polar architecture. At the same time, aiming at a higher average efficiency, a two-level class- G supply modulator is investigated to dynamically switch the DPA VDD. It has successfully demonstrated an average efficiency of 34.6% for this class-G modulated DPA in a complete circuit simulation using the IEEE 802.11b signal.

Show moreThis research's purpose is to optimize an existing method to simulate stochas- tic integrals using Monte Carlo when the cost of function evaluation is dimension dependent. In the area of mathematical nance, we often need to price a path- dependent nancial derivative. This will result in the computation of E[g(B( ))], where g stands for a payoff function, and B is the Brownian Motion. A simple way to approximate this expectation is to take the average of the functional over a large num- ber of sample paths. Each path is approximated by a d-dimensional random vector. A larger d will provide a more accurate result. However, due to the limitation in time cost and computer memory, some large dimensions are not easy to be implemented. Therefore, we introduce the multi-level technique that is based on multi-grid ideas. It can be used to reduce the computational complexity for these kind of problems. Moreover, when we apply the multi-level technique, the proper sample size for each subspace integration needs to be computed in order to satisfy our guaranteed conser- vative xed width con dence intervals. Thus, the automatic sample size algorithm (two stage con dence interval algorithm) is used in conjunction with the multi-level method.

Show moreThe objective of this work is to develop mathematical models (using machine learning regression) that can mimic human ability to perceive motion of a small object in an image sequence or a video. The motivation for this work comes from the diagnostic cardiac imaging where a small deformation of a cardiac wall motion represents a signi cant diagnostic marker. First a brief overview of the state of the art in image and video quality assessment is given. This overview also points out a need for a new task based quality metrics which can better quantify, subjective, image sequence quality under various degradations, like blur and noise. Next a study is designed to measure human observers motion perception under various degradation models. Later, the results from this study are analyzed to detect which image sequence features are the most relevant for motion perception and the development of a mathematical model aiming to emulate humans. The chosen features are based on so called visual attention and estimated object motion. Since the computation requirement to calculate visual attention and estimated object motion are considerable we also present a fast parallel implementations based on graphical processing units using NVIDIA Compute Uni ed Device Architecture. The preliminary results indicate that proposed machine learning regression models with the use of the visual attention and estimated object motion can accurately predict human motion perception.

Show moreThe purpose of this study was to investigate the link between performance dimension importance and rating consistency in 360-degree feedback systems. 360- degree feedback surveys were conducted on 208 managerial level employees from various organizations across the United States. In partial support of the hypotheses, dimension importance showed some impact on consistency of performance ratings across rater groups. The link between importance and consistency was stronger for the peer rating group than for the direct report or other groups. Discussion of results and implications for practice and future research are provided. In conclusion, this study provides the first research to empirically examine the link between dimension importance and rating consistency

Show moreEgg white is widely used in food applications because of its nutritional benefits and versatile functionalities. Traditional treatment like thermal pasteurization utilized for safety concern is disadvantageous to the egg white proteins due to the functionality impairment. High pressure processing (HPP) technology is known as a non-thermal food preserving method that can be operated at ambient temperatures. Sucrose is an essential ingredient that affects the functional behavior of egg white in numerous baking and pastry applications. The current study investigated the effect of sucrose and HPP on the functional and physicochemical properties of egg white proteins and verified the efficacy of HPP on microbial inactivation in egg white. Sucrose addition and HPP treatment were combined to study the foaming and physicochemical properties. Homogenized egg white samples were treated at selected HPP conditions (300-500 MPa) for 5-15 min, with an initial temperature of 4°C. Sucrose was added at 0-48% (w/v) to samples before or after HPP treatment. Foaming properties including foaming capacity and foam stability were measured immediately after whipping process. Turbidity and viscosity analyses were conducted within 24 hr after HPP treatment. The efficacy of HPP (500 MPa for 5 min) on microbial inactivation was verified using a pathogenic strain Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis (H7037) isolated from egg yolk implicated in a salmonellosis outbreak and a nonpathogenic Escherichia coli K12 strain (ATCC23716). All trials were completed in triplicate. Both addition of sucrose and HPP treatment decreased the foaming capacity but increased the foam stability of egg white proteins. Adding sucrose before HPP protected protein from turbidity and maintained foaming capacity, while adding sucrose after HPP greatly improved foam stability (p<0.05). Increasing HPP x holding time from 5 to 15 min did not affect the foaming properties significantly (p>0.05). A 5-log reduction of both strains was achieved after HPP treatment at 500 MPa for 5 min. These results exhibited that HPP can be used as a processing technology for the egg white safety control and that HPP could modify egg white foaming quality in food baking applications.

Show moreProducts based on dried, partially sprouted seeds have been associated with foodborne salmonellosis. Typically, sprouted seeds have been a major concern with respect to foodborne illness, but little is known about the risks associated with dried partial sprouted seed products. Previous studies suggest that low-temperature, highhumidity storage conditions may provide an alternative means to inactivate Salmonella for those processors opposed to traditional thermal processing. The objective of this study was to determine the growth of Salmonella during germination of pumpkin, sunflower, and chia seeds, and the survival of Salmonella during drying and storage under variable temperature and relative humidity (RH) conditions. Pumpkin, sunflower, and chia seeds were dry inoculated at 5 log CFU/g with 4 serotype mixture of Salmonella using a dry transfer method, and then soaked in sterile water at 25 and 37°C for 24 h. Salmonella and total aerobic mesophilic plate counts (APC) were determined on xylose lysine deoxycholate (XLD) and tryptic soy agar supplemented with 0.6% yeast extract (TSAYE), respectively. Seeds using this procedure were drained and dried at 25, 51 and 60°C. The water activity (aw) and microbial population of seeds were monitored during drying. Seeds soaked and dried at 25oC were utilized for subsequently storage studies. Portions of dried chia seeds were ground into powder, then pumpkin, sunflower and chia seeds and chia seeds powder were stored at either 37 or 45oC at three different RH levels. The aw and microbial population of seed samples were monitored during storage. During the seed soaking, Salmonella and APC increased approximately 3 log CFU/g. Some decreases were observed at the end of the growth period, as may be expected after stationary phase. Drying at 60oC to a aw of 0.1 resulted in over 6-log CFU/g loss in bacterial population in partially sprouted pumpkin and sunflower seeds, and 5-log CFU/g loss in partially sprouted chia seeds. However, seeds dried at 25oC bring the aw to 0.5 had only approximately a 1-log CFU/g loss in bacterial population. The highest temperature (45oC) and RH (76%) storage condition had the greatest inactivation effect. At 45oC and 76%RH, Salmonella in pumpkin and sunflower seeds were below detection limit after 4 d and 7 d respectively. Salmonella populations in chia seeds and chia seeds powder were still detectable after 7 d regardless of the treatment condition. Salmonella is capable of survival during the manufacture of partially sprouted seeds including both drying and storage steps. Mild thermal treatment coupled with high RH storage condition holds promise for Salmonella inactivation in pumpkin and sunflower seeds but is less effective for chia seeds and chia seeds powder. Dried, partially sprouted seeds that are used as ingredients or consumed directly without further processing are a high-risk food product. Such products must be treated to eliminate foodborne pathogens that may cause foodborne illness.

Show moreHigh pressure processing (HPP) is readily gaining prominence worldwide as an alternative method of food preservation due to its benefits of improved quality, freshness and nutrient retention. The use of polymer-based flexible packaging materials has allowed application of HPP to prepackaged food products, without significant loss of physical and mechanical properties. However, there is limited data existing on migration properties in the materials before and/or after HPP. Therefore, it’s necessary to evaluate potential migration issues in pre-packed foods during HPP (Song and Koontz, 2012). This research was conducted to determine the migration properties in cast polypropylene (CPP) films during and after HPP (71°C and 700MPa) and a comparable thermal processing (TP, 71°C and 0.1MPa), using headspace (HS) gas chromatography (GC) coupled with mass spectrometer (MS) technique to quantify selected surrogate compounds (chloroform (CF), toluene (TOL), methyl salicylate (MS) and phenyl cyclohexane (PC)) in FDA-suggested food simulants (Miglyol and 10% Ethanol), and using dynamic mechanical analyser (DMA) to test glass transition temperature (Tg) of films. In general, HPP significantly decreased the migration of selected surrogates from CPP film into Miglyol or 10% Ethanol when compared to TP. For Miglyol, after 5min-HPP migration recoveries of CF, TOL, MS and PC were 53, 61, 24, and 16% respectively, while all compounds reached 100% after 5min-TP. For 10% Ethanol, recoveries of four compounds were 22.6, 12.6, 11.2, and 8.4% after HPP treatment, but were 51.0, 25.5, 21.2, and 9.2% with TP treatment. During storage at room temperature after processing, migration recoveries increased for both HPP/TP treated and non- xii processed samples; however, concentration of surrogated in HPP treated films were near or lower than those from non-processed and/or TP treated films. This research will help the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the food industry to determine whether any safety issues related to chemical migration should be addressed concerning the use of HPP in production of prepackaged foods. The results may be used in the food contact notification and petition review processes of approving new packaging materials and components for use in HPP applications (Song and Koontz, 2011).

Show moreAziridinium ions are valuable and important intermediates to prepare complex nitrogen containing compounds. Various enantiomerically enriched -haloamines were synthesized as precursors to generate aziridinium ions in situ. Optically active aziridinium perchlorates or triflates were prepared and characterized using 1H and 13C NMR. Regioselective and enantioselective ring opening reactions of aziridinium ions with diverse nucleophilies including cyanide, azide, amines, hydride and water were extensively studied. An efficient one-pot synthetic route to enantiomerically enriched alcohols and amine precursors was developed. Development of the adequate bifunctional chelators is a critical step for radioimmunotherapy (RIT) of cancer. The practical and scalable regiospecific ring opening reactions of aziridinium ions with macrocyclic amines were utilized for synthesis of a series of bifunctional ligands including 3p-C-NETA, C-NE3TA, 3p-C-NE3TA, 3p-C-DECA, 3p-C-DE4TA, an optically active (S)-C-NE3TA, and bifunctional DTPA analogues for RIT using 90Y and 177Lu. Preparation of bifunctional chelators that can rapidly form 64Cu complexes with high stability is an imminent goal for effective PET imaging. A series of NOTA and NE3TA-based chelators were prepared. NE3TA-based bile acid conjugates and NE3TA- based dual receptor-targeted conjugates were synthesized and possess potential for application of targeted PET imaging with 64Cu.

Show morePositron emission tomography (PET) is an important molecular imaging modality. To develop new bifunctional chelators for use in more sensitive PET imaging, 64Cu-radiolabeled chelators have been investigated as promising PET agents. We synthesized and evaluated a macrocyclic chelator (NOTA)-based new bifunctional ligands with different coordination groups. New bifunctional chelators were evaluated for their radiolabeling efficiency with 64Cu, and in vitro complex stability of 64Cu-labeled chelators in human serum was also studied. 64Cu-labeled chelators was further evaluated for in vitro complex stability by EDTA challenge as a rigorous test of transchelation. As a result, chelator D, E, 3p-C-NE3TA, and 3p-C-NOTA were indicated as best chelators and have a promise for 64Cu-based PET imaging. Radioimmunotherapy (RIT) is a highly selective modality of cancer treatment and uses a radiolabeled chelator conjugated with monoclonal antibody. Our continued research of developing new RIT agents radiolabeled with 177Lu, different types of a macrocyclic based bifunctional chelators (DOTA, NOTA and NE3TA)- with variation of denticity, macrocyclic cavity, and bimodality were synthesized. Radiolabeling efficiency of chelators and in vitro complex stability of 177Lu-radiolabeled complex in human serum were evaluated. The effects of different pH and TLC solvents were investigated to confirm the best radiolabeling condition of new chelators with 177Lu. Furthermore, complex stability of 177Lu-radiolabeled chelators in a solution with excess EDTA and various metals was evaluated for transchelation. Therefore, the results of radiolabeling, serum stability and EDTA and metal challenge studies indicate that cavity size and ligand x denticity in chelators affected binding affinity to Lu(III) . 3p-C-DETA was identified as the best chelator for further research of RIT agent.

Show moreCognitive impairment in individuals with chronic pain is frequently observed and clinically significant (McCracken, & Iverson, 2001). It has long been recognized that emotional factors contribute to both patient perception of impaired cognition and verifiable cognitive impairment on testing (Burt, Zembar, & Niederehe, 1995). However, scientific consensus is lacking regarding how specific emotions, such as depression, anxiety, and pain catastrophizing impact cognition in chronic pain patients. Research seeking to clarify such relationships has been hampered by methodological shortcomings, which include limited sample sizes, non-objective measures, and failure to examine multiple emotional dimensions in unique samples (McCracken and Vowels, 2014; Moriarty, McGuire, & Finn, 2011). The present study examined factors that might contribute to cognitive impairment in this population using a sample of 78 chronic pain patients evaluated for surgical candidacy for spinal cord stimulator (SCS) implantation at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Use of such a sample ensured patients were wellmotivated to perform to the best of their ability, so as to increase their chance of being cleared for such a highly desirable procedure. Additionally, the vast majority of participants passed well-validated objective measures of effort. Hypothesized associations between attentional function as measured objectively by the RBANS attention index and a number of predictor variables: depression and anxiety, subjective pain experience, pain catastrophizing, somatization, and engagement in pain behaviors were not found, and subsequent analyses of proposed mediating relationships could not be performed. However, fully a third (35.9 percent) of our well-motivated sample did not show clinically significant impairment (below 85, or 1 SD below the mean), as was expected. Thus, it is possible that a well-motivated sample may have been less likely than samples used in previous investigations to show cognitive impairment overall. Strengths and limitations of the study are discussed, as well as clinical and research implications.

Show moreWhen using a personality questionnaire for predicting behavior, criterion-related validity improvements have historically focused on improving scale level construction techniques over examining the global impact of item-level characteristics on criterion-related validity. This article investigates the impact of item-level characteristics on the criterion-related validity of the Five-Factor Model (FFM) (as a personality instrument) as a predictor of job-related behavior. Two self-report FFM measures were correlated with workplace observer ratings to derive mean validity scores for each of the FFM items. A panel of judges then rated these items on the following item characteristics: ambiguity, abstractness, comprehensibility, wording, negation, transparency and social desirability. As hypothesized, social desirability, negation, wording and transparency were correlated with criterion-related validity. Contrary to the study hypothesis, abstractness was found to be positively correlated with criterion-related validity.

Show moreThis thesis focus on examining the relationship between bid price and claims in public construction projects in order to propose the alternative bidding strategy and help owner minimize actual completion cost and gain the best value for their construction projects. The investigation on the literature of bidding methods, claims and their relationship guided us to come up with our hypotheses on building up an equation that quantitatively expressing the reverse correlation of bid price and claims. In order to archive our goal, data from 30 public construction projects were collected, and the statistic method and data analysis are utilized. Finally the equation to estimate the amount of claim from the bid price, the engineer’s estimate, and the spread between the lowest two bids are established through regression model. Even though some limitations are remained, the results from this study strongly recommend owners to prefer a contractor that offers the lowest bid and potential claim, rather than select the contractor using the traditional process of choosing the lowest bid.
