The building, built in 1920s, originally housed the Huber and Huber Motor Express trucking terminal. The building was acquired by the Armour Research Foundation in 1949, and renovated in the 1950s. It housed various ARF activities in the subsequent decades, including Physics and Chemistry research, before housing the Institute for Psychological Services in the years immediately prior to its demolition in 1975.

Show morePhotograph of Armour Flats, located at 3322 Armour Avenue (now Federal Street). Designed by the architecture firm Patton & Fisher, and constructed in 1886, Armour Flats was a 194-unit apartment building constructed to house Armour meatpacking company employees. It later provided living quarters for Armour Institute faculty. In 1907, six sections of the building were christened Chapin Hall for use by Armour Institute. When the majority of the building was torn down in 1917 and 1919, Chapin Hall remained. Chapin Hall and the Physics Building were demolished in 1968. Date of photograph is unknown. Five bays of this building, known then as the Diesel Lab Building, were constructed in 1944, with five new bays following later that year. In 1945, an additional 7 bays were begun. Only upon their completion in 1946, did the ARF Engineering Research Building reach its final dimensions. The university library was housed in the south section of the building before the construction of the John Crerar Library in 1962. The building is also known as: Armour Research Foundation Automotive Research Laboratory (1945), Armour Research Foundation Engineering Research Building (1946-1963), Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute Engineering Research Building (1963-2011).
