A birthday luncheon was held on May 18, 1953 at the Blackstone Hotel in Chicago. The exhibit, organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, in conjunction with the Busch-Reisinger Museum of Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, opened on May 18, 1953 in the Metallurgy and Chemical Engineering building on IIT's campus, and ran until June 15. Creator unknown, probably Illinois Institute of Technology.

Previously, the independent Crerar Library had housed IIT's James S. Kemper Library.
