He joined the Illinois Tech faculty in 1962 as a professor of mechanical engineering, at which time he remained an ARF consultant. Torda helped to design the Blue Flame, which held the land speed record from 1972 to 1980, and was integral in the development of an Experimental Engineering degree program at IIT.
