Show moreOn May 22, 2011, Joplin, Missouri was struck by a powerful EF-5 tornado. The nearly one-mile wide tornado cut a path almost 22 miles in length, destroying over 7,000 homes and about 2,000 other structures. Among the buildings completely destroyed during the storm was Joplin High School. The rebuilding of the school is an important step for the community to heal and grow from the devastation. The intent of the design is to improve the quality of education by incorporating collaborative learning spaces, integrating technology and promoting environmental responsibility.

Show moreto create a vertical community bound together by two key issues/requirements in Korean society: urban agriculture and mental health care to create a ‘vertical façade farm’ capable of producing 156 tons of vegetables (predominantly lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, and strawberries) and 200 tons of fish per year to create a mental health sanctuary (or sanatorium) that provides short term (days), midterm (months) and long term (years) residence and care for people with mental health issues that may require physical operations and/or psychological care. to actively engage the mental health residents in aspects of the agricultural production to draw on research showing that engagement with plants/nature assists in mental healing. to create a large multi-purpose space at the ground floor of the building which will largely serve as a farmer’s market for sale of the agricultural produce and engagement between the community residents and the public to create a series of gardens/green spaces at height within the complex, as well as vertical green walls, for healing (residents and urban issues) to use the double-skin ‘façade farm’ for assisting in passive natural ventilation of internal spaces

Show moreThis IPRO is designed to support the Department of Homeland Security national security initiatives as outlined by the United States Government. The goal is to design a project that supports homeland security compliance guidelines. For example, depending upon interests of the group, a software program could be developed containing a matrix of risk and preventive factors which could be used to assess how well an organization meets Homeland Security Guidelines. Items might involve public policy, computer technology, facilities, transportation, communications, EPA, security, water and air. The need to protect our facilities and people in the Chicago area given recent terrorist activities and the frequent, heightened state of alerts is critical. A well-defined homeland security project can help in contributing to the initiative of establishing homeland readiness. This hands-on project will afford students the opportunity to research an apply concepts of transportation, mechanical, electrical, power, economics, and especially computer technology and engineering to homeland security.

Show moreThe goal of this interprofessional project will be to develop a test-bed system for a new device targeted at ECE 100 Introduction to Engineering. It may also be useful for an upper-level course in Hardware/Software Design for Embedded Systems. This course is being developed in response to feedback from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) that students need a major meaningful design experience involving integrated hardware/software design. An important aspect of this design experience will be the use of open-ended design problems that integrate a micro-controller with some larger system. Ideally, the students in this course would design and build a complete hardware/software system. However, this is unfeasible due to the time constraints of the semester and the cost constraints of providing the necessary parts. Instead, we propose to give students in the class a number of test-bed systems that represent an "almost complete" hardware system that requires additional software and hardware design activities in order to fully complete a system.

Show morehere is a continuing need to provide information and motivational materials to high school students to interest them in engineering. These students would also benefit by learning about the various educational programs offered to help them meet their goals. Finally, information on the application process, especially the varying student aid packages from universities, government and industry would benefit high school students. There may be other services that would interest and benefit high school students that this project team could identify. There is also a wide variety of information already available to high school students and guidance counselors from individual universities as well as commercial and government organizations, associations and various publications that rank institutions. The sheer number of sources and volume of information about colleges and careers can be quite daunting to navigate. Everyone who has been through this process knows how frustrating and stressful it can be for students, parents and counselors in not having confidence that the best information was identified in a timely way to consider alternatives and make intelligent decisions. It is envisioned that this project would seek information from IIT engineering freshmen as well as high school students and counselors about current practices and trends in how the web and other resources are used in this process. Based on survey data, the project team will develop a web site or portal that can organize and provide information and services regarded as most valuable to high school students and counselors in their decision making process -- and do so in an integrated way, with appropriate planning and selection tools to support the process. It is envisioned that this could ultimately become part of a seamless service from the earliest consideration of career direction and college selection by high school students, through to specific career and employer selection by college students, and finally extending to support for alumni as they maintain their competitive edge in their professional practice. This project is a continuation of an IPRO project from the Spring 2001 semester.

Show moreRapid developments in wireless communication technology have created new opportunities to implement information networks that can support the operation of modern public transportation systems. The primary goal of this continuing IPRO team has been to develop a wireless information network design that facilitates communications in a large-scale system like that characterized by the Chicago Transit Authority. The team will focus on the development of a custom wireless mobile communications system for vehicle tracking and route-specific graphic display of vehicle motion. Objectives for the team will include enhancing the computer-GPS interface for data extrapolation, implementation of multiple input real-time graphic display, and traffic model development.

Show moreIPRO 364: Ramovation has the great opportunity to assist our community partner, Save the Ramova organization, in the development of preliminary design and business opportunity assessments for the renovation of the Ramova Theater. IPRO 364 is a continuing IPRO from the spring 2011 semester. From the spring semester, the IPRO 364 team created a preliminary program for the Ramova Theater renovation. The preliminary program was informed by analysis gathered from three research methods: case studies on other theater renovations, survey responses from the Bridgeport neighborhood and surrounding colleges, and contextual studies on neighborhoods similar to Bridgeport. A preliminary budget for the renovation was also determined. To tackle the summer 2011 IPRO workload, the summer team will divide into several sub groups which include the Design/Clean Energy Group, Budget/Finance Group, Case Study/Survey Group, and the Interview Group. In the summer semester, the IPRO team will expand on the preliminary program and preliminary budget created by the spring team. The IPRO group hopes the output from the Spring 2011, Summer 2011, and subsequent semesters will assist the Save the Ramova organization in presenting Ramova Theater renovation ideas to key stakeholders and also help spur development on the Halsted St. corridor of Bridgeport.
