Show moreThe purpose of this overlay is to provide the proper mechanics which allows a new type of home ownership while addressing current urban vacancy. The overlay attempts to be democratic. It establishes basic rules based on the existing block requirements, while also providing flexibility within. Residents voluntarily participate in the system, benefiting from the whole. Social interactions, block orientated activities, and housing arrangements expand and contract over time.

Show moreMONUMENTAL ADAPTATION: REIMAGINING THE OLD CHICAGO POST OFFICE Built in 1932, the Old Chicago Main Post Office was the largest post office in the world at three million square feet. It was designed to accommodate the extension of Congress Parkway and in 1953 the Eisenhower Expressway cut a void through the center of the building. Finally the Post Office was vacated in 1997 and remains unused to this day. This project proposes the adaptation of the Post Office into a hybrid fieldhouse that contains public recreation and retail space. This proposal keeps the Post Office public, utilizing income generated through retail to maintain the building for Chicagoans. Recreation program is inserted into voids carved out of the original building. Retail occupies the peripheral space, surrounding the voids.

Show moreTraditionally, the development of tall buildings’ forms was a direct product of a close and meaningful collaboration between the architect and structural engineer. This was particularly evident in Chicago during the Modern Era in the architectural design of tall buildings, which provided the key ingredient of architectural form–structure interaction. The quest for iconic, individualistic forms during the Postmodern Era, however, has led to the shift away from the traditional format. New approaches to design began to overemphasize aesthetics and style while paying less attention to structure and the rigorous discipline it requires. In such approaches, issues pertaining to structure are typically addressed after the fact – that is, after the architectural form is well articulated – which necessarily limits the structural design role to solving the problem rather than integrating the structural solution into the architectural concept. This has resulted in an apparent disconnect between architectural form and structure in contemporary tall buildings. To address this disconnect, this research proposes a methodological digitallybased design approach that permits direct and concurrent interaction between the structural and formal design considerations pertaining to tall buildings during the conceptual design phase. Such an approach builds on the generative capabilities offered by available parametric/associative systems and the added potential of integrating them with structural analysis and evaluation tools. Through such integration, a performance feedback loop has been initiated to guide the iterative, parametric form development. Demonstration of the design approach has been carried out based on a number of design scenarios. Such demonstration illustrated the tool’s potential for assisting architects in realizing their conceptual ideas not only visually, but also structurally and materially. The process developed in this research yields architectural forms that respond positively to structure without in any way jeopardizing the visual intent of the architectural concept. The research concludes by remarking on the validity of the proposed approach, highlighting the research’s achievements, addressing the research’s limitations, and proposing directions for future research.

Show moreNational concern over low fiber intake in America has prompted the food industry to supplement processed foods with added fibers. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed a new rule for Nutrition Facts labeling requiring added/functional fibers to demonstrate a physiological health benefit to be considered as dietary fiber on the Nutrition Facts label. Physiological benefits, however, can be affected by the fiber’s physiochemical properties and environment (i.e. food matrix). Polydextrose (PDX) is a synthetic polymer of glucose resistant to digestion with mixed reports regarding its contribution to producing physiological effects based on “acceptable” fiber benefits: glucose control, cholesterol lowering and laxation effect. Previously we showed that PDX does not lower postprandial glucose when added to a sugar drink (wet matrix). In the present study, we tested PDX in a dry cereal bar to determine if the dry matrix would reveal differential effects of PDX on postprandial glycemia. In a randomized, 3 h postprandial, crossover clinical trial, nineteen participants (10 male, 9 female) with a mean (± SD) age of 35.1 ± 8.5 y and BMI 25.0 ± 3.6 kg/m2 consumed a cereal bar with either 0 g or 12 g of PDX as a light breakfast on two separate occasions. Consumption of the cereal bar with 12 g of PDX significantly increased the postprandial glucose and insulin responses compared to 0 g control (p=0.02 and p=0.01, respectively). Total area under the curve (AUC) values for glucose over 3 hours was not significantly higher than control (p=0.16), but total AUC for insulin was significantly higher (p=0.03). Gastrointestinal (GI) tolerability was evaluated using scores ranked according to usual feelings of GI sensitivity. Overall, no significant changes or differences between treatments in GI tolerability were observed (p>0.05). Based on the endpoint of glycemia and the proposed FDA rule for fiber labeling, PDX would not qualify as a dietary fiber on the Nutrition Facts label.

Show moreMethods used to inoculate foods may impact the results of Salmonella survival and thermal resistance studies. Currently, there is little information as to the most effective means to inoculate Salmonella into low-moisture food products for use in process validation studies. The objective of this study is to assess the resulting 42 d storage stability and thermal resistance of Salmonella inoculated by liquid addition in food and inert carrier matrices. Salmonella enterica serovar Agona 447967 was inoculated into ground pepper, oat flour, and sand at approximately 9-10 log CFU/g using a hand mixing procedure and stored at 25°C, 32% relative humidity (RH). After a 2 d equilibration, the samples were tested for inoculation homogeneity. Distribution of Salmonella populations proved uniform in black pepper and sand but not in oat flour. Subsequent testing for stability by enumeration with both tryptic soy agar with 0.6% yeast extract (TSAYE) and xylose lysine desoxycholate (XLD) agars was performed weekly with black pepper and sand only. Thermal resistance was determined periodically during storage using aluminum test cells for pepper and glass vial for sand as sample holders. Over 42 d, the average starting Salmonella populations in pepper and sand were 7.88 ± 0.13 and 7.69 ± 0.11 log CFU/g, respectively, and final populations were 6.14 ± 0.06 and 6.52 ± 0.07 log CFU/g, respectively. Population changes were significantly different (P < 0.05). For pepper the thermal resistance did not change significantly during storage (P > 0.05) and were similar to values reported by other researchers using alternative inoculation techniques. However, thermal resistance measured in sand (D90ᵒC = 3.39 ± 0.41 min) was substantially higher than that measured in black pepper (D75ᵒC-value = 4.99 ± 0.21 min) or other literature values. Overall a liquid inoculation protocol proved efficacious for small particles such as ground black pepper or sand but was unable to provide a uniform distribution of cell populations in a powder such as oat flour.

Show moreWe investigate a generalized version of the Pathological Liar Game of Ellis and Yan. In our version, there are nonnegative integer parameters M; n; e; a; q with 0 < a < q. The player (Carole) is equipped with M messages, each with an integral error count. Carole performs the following procedure n times in sequence: she numbers the messages in increasing order of error count, divides them into consecutive contiguous size-q blocks, and selects a size-a subset of each block. The messages she does not select have their error count increased by 1. Carole loses i , after this process is complete, there is at least one message with error count e: We allow n to approach in nity and suppose e = bfnc for a xed f 2 (0; 1). We establish an upper bound on the minimum M for which Carole always loses, as a function of n, by extending a technique of Cooper and Ellis; we develop a simple process that approximates the course of the game for any choice by Carole, and bound the difference between this approximating process and any state of the game achievable by Carole. Along the way we generalize several of the results of Cooper and Ellis in ways that suggest future application to similar problems in adaptive coding theory.
