Show moreIn recent years, the role of online shoppers has transformed from a passive information receiver into an active shopping experience sharer, which makes reading the reviews left by peer shoppers a very important factor in consumer purchase decisions. However, fake online reviews are flooding websites and consumers are gradually becoming aware of that. This encourages consumers’ skepticism toward the credibility of online reviews. Using a structural equation modeling approach, this study analyzes the effect of consumers’ perceptions of shopping platform characteristics and online review trustworthiness on their purchase intention. Conditional process analysis was used to study the moderation effect of consumers’ skepticism during their shopping experience. A total of 1,004 valid responses were collected through an online survey administered by Qualtrics. Results indicate that consumers’ perceived platform trustworthiness contributes to the trustworthiness of its online reviews, which in turn both directly and indirectly increases purchase intention. Most parts of the proposed conceptual model are supported by empirical results with a few exceptions: consumer’s perceived review quantity is found to have a positive impact on perceived review quality and platform quality is found to be directly related to consumers' perceived risk. All re-specifications increase the model fit, followed by cross-validation that yields satisfactory model stability. With the establishment of measurement invariance, we discuss structural invariance across sub-groups and present some interesting findings. Results also show that all three dimensions of consumers’ skepticism negatively moderate the direct effect of the review’s trustworthiness on purchase intention. However, unlike the other two items (skepticism toward review trustworthiness and reviewer's motivation), consumers’ skepticism toward the reviewer's identity does not moderate the indirect causal path between review trustworthiness and purchase intention through perceived risk. We also adopt a different approach using latent moderated structural equations to support our findings. From a research perspective, this study contributes to our understanding of how consumers absorb information from online reviews to develop appropriate responses (e.g., purchase intention). From a practice perspective, this study provides insights on how platform and seller should respond to and properly manage consumers’ perceptions and skepticism toward online reviews.

Show moreThe purpose of the study was to extend organizational socialization research by exploring the impact of an orientation over time. Orientations and their impact have rarely been studied despite their popularity in practice. When viewed through the lens of the training literature, it was hypothesized that strategic orientations have a positive impact on newcomers by increasing transfer and its predictors (i.e., affective and cognitive learning outcomes). Two-hundred and nine newcomers with prior work experience participated by attending an organization-level orientation on their first two days with a new employer. Post-training learning outcomes were gathered immediately after orientation followed by eight weekly assessments of orientation transfer and newcomer adjustment (i.e., role clarity, social integration, values mastery). Using latent growth curve modeling, intraindividual differences in interindividual change in transfer and adjustment were examined and all trajectories were found to significantly vary within the sample. Findings suggest that transfer declines and then levels off around week four and the slower the decline, the greater the rate of adjustment. As predicted, initial levels of orientation transfer mediated the relationship between learning outcomes and rates of adjustment. Future research should continue to explore the role of transfer in newcomer adjustment, particularly to seek predictors of transfer trajectories which were not found in the present study.

Show moreWhen people with serious mental illness fail to take prescribed psychiatric medications, they may be at risk for hospitalization or other negative outcomes. One theoretical model for explaining medication adherence behavior is self-determination theory (SDT). According to SDT, autonomously motivated behaviors are more likely to persist than are behaviors motivated by external forces. For people with serious mental illness, psychiatrists, mental health providers, family and peers are all potential external influencers on medication-related decisions. However, interactions with mental health professionals around medication adherence may be perceived as coercive by people with mental illness and professionals may fail to adequately address valid concerns of mental health consumers. This study aimed to examine how perceived autonomy support (the degree to which people with mental illness view others as encouraging towards selfdirected medication decisions) is related to medication adherence. Sixty-six individuals with serious mental illness completed measures of self-reported medication adherence, motivation to take medication and the perceived autonomy support of psychiatrists, mental health providers, peers and family members. Perceived autonomy support failed to predict one month adherence for any of potential social influencers. However, global autonomy support and autonomy support of psychiatrists were related to both autonomous motivation and depressive symptoms, such that participants who felt more supported in making autonomous decisions cited more internally motivated reasons for taking medications and were less depressed.

Show moreStudies in the volatility process of financial markets have focused more on volatility modeling aspects, using parametric assumptions. Compared with the vast amount of research in parametric modeling, there is a lack of studies in nonparametric approaches in volatility forecasting and forecasting performance evaluation. This research intends to explore alternative approaches to forecasting volatility of financial returns, and evaluation of forecasting models. This research will employ grammatical evolution to propose a hybrid forecasting model that utilizes the benefits of parametric and genetic programming models. Furthermore, an alternative methodology to handle structural breaks in volatility is examined by utilizing an adaptive approach in dynamic environments. In an extensive empirical study, the proposed models will be compared with the other models widely used in the literature using statistical and economic tests. Specifically, as an alternative to the statistical performance evaluation measure, a nontraditional method derived from the idea of speculating on asset volatility will be employed to compare the performance as well as to assess economic usefulness of competing volatility models. The hybrid model provided superior forecasting performance than traditional techniques both on economic and statistical measures.

Show morePast research has examined the low employment rates in veterans with serious mental illness (SMI) (Zivin et al., 2011) and the research suggests that the benefits of employment for veterans are improved mental health symptoms, better finances, and better self-esteem (Bond et al., 2001). The specific relationship between employment and recovery from SMI in individuals has been examined (Drake et al., 2001; Bond et al., 2001; Modini et al., 2016). Previous research has not examined the correlation between recovery from SMI and employment, specifically in a population of veterans with SMI. The current study examines the relationship between recovery and employment of veterans with SMI, using the Recovery Assessment Scale (RAS) as a measure of recovery. A logistic regression analysis yielded that no relationship was found between recovery and employment status. Results of this study suggest there may be other factors affecting the relationship between these two factors. Moreover, there is the possibility that there is no relationship between recovery and employment.

Show moreHoarding disorder (HD) is characterized by significant difficulty discarding items, resulting in an accumulation of clutter. HD is a public health concern and is associated with treatment ambivalence (e.g., refusal to initiate treatment, dropout, and limited treatment compliance). While low insight and motivation may account for some of the treatment ambivalence, it also could be due to a number of other factors related to how HD is being perceived by others, such as stigma. Yet, there is very little research on the relationship between stigma and hoarding, and what these studies have shown is that HD is judged negatively by the general population (i.e., public stigma) in a variety of ways. However, despite these initial findings, there are no in-depth studies examining stigma of HD from the perspective of those with lived experience. Further, previous research of stigma and HD utilized stigma measures that were significantly modified from their original intent to measure severe mental illness, and it is possible that general measures of stigma may not capture the specific features of HD or public perceptions of HD. The present study is a qualitative analysis to investigate stigma pertinent to HD.

Show moreDespite the increasing interest in gamification, a review of the gamification literature by Seaborn and Fels (2015) found that very few articles addressed the connection between theoretical considerations and empirical findings. Landers (2014) developed the theory of gamified learning to provide researchers with a framework to explore the effect of gamification on learning outcomes. The present study empirically tested the mediational process of Lander’s (2014) theory of gamified learning as well as proposed and tested an extension to examine the moderating role of an individual difference. Specifically, this study explored the moderating role of goal orientation on the mediational pathway from Assessment game attributes (i.e., badge, progress bar and combined) to self-efficacy to learning outcomes (i.e., declarative knowledge, skill demonstration and job-search self-efficacy). A gamified resume course was developed for this study on a gamification platform called Gametize. Participants were recruited through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk and instructed to respond to a pre-course questionnaire containing demographic information and the goal orientation assessment, they were then directed to the Gametize website to complete the gamified resume course after which they were re-directed to Qualtrics to complete a post-course questionnaire collecting job-search self-efficacy measures. Results show there was insufficient evidence to support the predictions based on the theory of gamified learning, and moreover the hypothesized moderating effect of goal orientation. Nonetheless, an interesting outcome of this study was the significant interaction of the badge condition with LGO and APGO, suggesting badges can help improve self-efficacy in a gamified learning experience. A unique contribution of this study is a blueprint for examining individual differences as an extension of the theory of gamified learning. Practical implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.

Show moreThis dissertation aims to study financialization in the structured products market. The structured products market has been undergoing a major transformation in recent years. The market used to mainly serve institutional investors. However, as a few trading platforms powered by fintech companies emerged on the horizon, more and more banks are starting to compete in this market. The average trade size has also been declining significantly, thereby making the market increasingly accessible to retail investors. What are the factors that facilitate the development of this market? What are the economic incentives of issuers and investors? How do issuers compete? What does the future hold for this market? The main finding of this dissertation is that structured products provide utility to retail investors; As the level of risk aversion increases, an investor increasingly prefers structured products to other traditional asset classes; issuers develop three sources of competitive advantage to be a satisficer; the rise of fintech and improvement of financial education are the key to opening this market to retail investors.

Show moreWe are perceiving and communicating with the world in a multisensory manner, where different information sources are sophisticatedly processed and interpreted by separate parts of the human brain to constitute a complex, yet harmonious and unified intelligent system. To endow the machines with true intelligence, multimodal machine learning that incorporates data from various modalities including vision, audio, and text, has become an increasingly popular research area with emerging technical advances in recent years. Under the context of multimodal learning, the creativity to generate and synthesize novel and meaningful data is a critical criterion to assess machine intelligence. As a step towards a multisensory and creative AI system, we study the problem of multimodal generation in this thesis by exploring the field from multiple perspectives. Firstly, we analyze different data modalities in a comprehensive manner by comparing the data natures, the semantics, and their corresponding mainstream technical designs. We then propose to investigate three multimodal generation application scenarios, namely text generation from visual data, audio generation from visual data, and visual generation from textual data, with diverse approaches to give an overview of the field. For the direction of text generation from visual data, we study a novel multimodal task in which the model is expected to summarize a given video with textual descriptions, under a challenging condition where the video can only be partially seen. We propose to supplement the missing visual information via a dialogue interaction and introduce QA-Cooperative network with a dynamic dialogue history update learning mechanism to tackle the challenge. For the direction of audio generation from visual data, we present a new multimodal task that aims to generate music for a given silent dance video clip. Unlike most existing conditional music generation works that generate specific types of mono-instrumental sounds using symbolic audio representations (e.g., MIDI), and that heavily rely on pre-defined musical synthesizers, we generate dance music in complex styles (e.g., pop, breaking, etc.) by employing a Vector-Quantized (VQ) audio representation via our proposed Dance2Music-GAN (D2M-GAN) framework. For the direction of visual generation from textual data, we tackle a key desideratum in conditional synthesis, which is to achieve high correspondence between the conditioning input and generated output using the state-of-the-art generative model -- Diffusion Probabilistic Model. While most existing methods learn such relationships implicitly, by incorporating the prior into the variational lower bound in model training. In this work, we take a different route by explicitly enhancing input-output connections by maximizing their mutual information, which is achieved by our proposed Conditional Discrete Contrastive Diffusion (CDCD) framework. For each direction, we conduct extensive experiments on multiple multimodal datasets and demonstrate that all of our proposed frameworks are able to effectively and substantially improve task performance in their corresponding contexts.

Show moreRenewable generation, including solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, type 3 and 4 wind turbine generation systems (WTG), battery energy storage systems (BESS), as well as high voltage direct current (HVDC) and flexible alternating current (FACT) transmission system devices with increasing penetration level are being connected to the bulk power systems (BPS) via power electronic (PE) converters as the interface, referred to as the inverter-based resources (IBRs) on the transmission and sub-transmission levels or distributed energy resources (DERs) located on the distribution level. The IBR is almost entirely defined by the control algorithms and found to be more prone to experiencing large disturbances due to the lack of the conventional synchronous machine (SM) intrinsic synchronous characteristics and mechanical inertia, as well as being in smaller capacity sizes. Thus, these reasons motivate this dissertation to study the large-signal transient stability and control of IBRs for reliable grid integration and rapid grid transformation. For large-signal stability analysis methods, Lyapunov-based methods are the fundamental theory used to characterize the stability issues with analytical solutions, although other non-Lyapunov methods could also be very helpful. A main difficulty hindering the widespread adoption of the Lyapunov stability analysis method is the difficulty of finding the proper Lyapunov function candidate for a higher dimensional nonlinear system. The Port-Hamiltonian (PH) nonlinear control theory is explored in this dissertation as a promising theoretical framework solution addressing this challenging issue. A PH-based tracking and robust control method is proposed to facilitate the practical application of the PH framework in IBR controls. In addition, considering the typical grid-forming (GFM) IBR control with a first-order low pass filter (LPF) block is usually involved with control saturation function for protection purposes under abnormal operating conditions with anti-windup issue in practical implementation, a PH-based bounded LPF (PH-BLPF) control is proposed to incorporate this in the large-signal PH interconnection modeling framework while preserving the robust tracking Lyapunov stability with improved transient dynamic performance and stability margin. Moreover, specific real-world transient synchronization stability issues, such as the grid voltage large fault disturbance case, are studied. In addition, to meet the recent emerging IBR grid code requirements, such as the current magnitude limitation, grid support function, and fault recovery capability of GFM-VSCs, a virtual impedance-based current-limiting GFM control with enhanced transient stability and grid support is proposed.

Show moreThe Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) is tasked with protecting the public’s water supply and improving the quality of water in their service area’s watercourses. Principal in this mission are the seven wastewater treatment plants that are operated by MWRDGC. The greater Chicago area possesses a combined sewer system (CSS) that combines sanitary sewage and stormwater runoff. Because of this CSS, water reclamation plants are burdened with not only processing sewage and sanitary waste, but also stormwater runoff. As a result there can be a large variation in water quality and quantity. MWRDGC’s newest water reclamation plant is the James C. Kirie Water Reclamation Plant, which was completed in 1980. This plant operates as a nitrification plant with no separate distinct denitrification process. It is important to note that no clearly defined unit processes such as nitrification towers are utilized at the Kirie Water Reclamation Plant. Nitrification occurs primarily in the aeration basins and is currently sufficient to meet water quality standards. However, because of the current regulatory climate, stricter standards on effluent discharge are likely in the near future especially with respect to nutrients. Stricter standards on total nitrogen in effluent instead of the current ammonia limits are one such expected water quality change. As a result of this expectation, modeling modifications and processes at a treatment plant can be a key tool in adjusting to evolving standards. Because water reclamation plants vary greatly depending on their technology, influent and processes, computer modeling provides a convenient way to assess how the plant will react to dynamic changes in influent quality and still be able to meet static effluent standards. Although computer modeling has been applied to water reclamation plants for some time now, there are no clearly defined or accepted protocols for this modeling. Combined with the variation exhibited by various types of water reclamation plants, often modeling protocols must be custom created for individual plants or types of plants. What follows is a study and simulation of the Kirie Water Reclamation Plant. Simulation was used to examine wet weather events at the Kirie Water Reclamation Plant. Wet weather phenomena were explored in step-wise manner to determine the relative effects of different perturbations in influent water quality and quantity. The results show the various effects in effluent quality depending upon the variable or combination of variables deviated. Deviations in temperature and flow dominate all other variations simulated and result in the largest effect on effluent water quality. Deviations of 50% to both temperature and flow simultaneously yielded an increase in effluent BOD and NH3 at twice and six times the steady state values, respectively.

Show moreMilitary families are vulnerable to many difficulties, including not just physical and mental health issues, but also financial, social, and occupational hardships. As such, they may experience disempowerment, or feelings of inadequacy to handle the myriad problems which they must confront. To create greater access to resources and provide necessary supports for this population, it is important that they feel empowered to advocate on their own behalves. Increased empowerment may also help military families to benefit more from programs and services already in place. Additionally, research indicates that empowerment is its own reward; those who feel empowered tend to have better mental and physical health outcomes and are more capable of solving their own problems (as opposed to relying on helping professionals). While empowerment has been studied in the rehabilitation psychology literature in other populations, it has yet to be studied in military families. The current study is an analysis of the factor structure of the Empowerment Scale in a sample of veterans and their family members participating in a peer-to-peer guided services program. Identifying the factor structure of the Empowerment Scale in this sample will aid future researchers in using the scale to study empowerment as both a process and an outcome in psychological studies looking at military families. Though previous studies have established a five factor model of empowerment, the current study suggests a four factor model with the following four factors identified: 1) self-esteem and self-efficacy, 2) autonomy, 3) community activism, and 4) anger and authority. Implications of the four factor model in the understanding of empowerment among military families are explored.
