Show moreAs cities expand the amount of impervious surface area increases, which increases the amount of stormwater runoff generated. Urban stormwater runoff contributes to the degradation and poor biological conditions of rivers and streams throughout the United States (USEPA, 2013). Currently, there are several different tools (i.e. computer software and models) available for stormwater managers to assess the effectiveness of best management practices (BMPs) to meet stormwater quality and quantity goals. In an effort to a create a single model that allows stormwater managers to evaluate the effectiveness of BMPs and associated cost information, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency developed System for Urban Stormwater Treatment and Analysis INtegration (SUSTAIN) (USEPA, 2009). In this study, SUSTAIN is used to determine what BMPs are necessary to meet the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) 2020 Sustainability Plan’s goal of achieving 100 percent capture and retention of all stormwater runoff on the IIT campus by the year 2020. Multiple BMPs were simulated in currently available green space and parking lots to evaluate the level of runoff reduction and associated cost of BMP installation. Although the simulations show that reductions in runoff are possible without affecting the current layout of the campus, 100 percent capture and retention is not possible for the entire IIT campus. While the 2020 goal of 100 percent reduction cannot be met for the entire campus, significant reductions in runoff can still be realized with the use of BMPs in different sections of campus with high associated costs.

Show moreSeismic bridge design practice started in the United States in the mid-1970s. Bridges designed according to pre-1970 design codes may be seismically vulnerable. This vulnerability is generally because of inadequate reinforcement detailing, which may compromise the strength and ductility of bridge piers, columns and bents. The lack of adequate strength and ductility may lead to bridge failure under seismic loads. Several rehabilitation methods have been used to retrofit the deficient columns and piers so that their performance under potential seismic loads can be improved. Among these methods includes using: (1) concrete jackets; (2) steel jackets; and (3) fiber reinforced polymer composites. The latter method has attracted bridge engineers in recent years because of its easy application and it versatility to be used in bents and columns with non-circular cross sections. The objective of this thesis is to provide a summary of the current practice in using this type of material in bridge retrofit applications. The thesis presents an overview of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials behavior and properties, and their composition. Furthermore, the behavior of reinforced concrete columns, when confined with FRP jackets, is reviewed. Available design methods used for determining the FRP jacket thickness and other design properties needed for application in seismic retrofitting of reinforced concrete columns are also reviewed, presented and discussed.

Show moreIn a construction project, it is generally accepted that the contractor's perceived risk is the main factor in determining what is to be proposed as the project cost and duration. Both the owner-organization and the contractor are aware of the existing risks and the owner-organizations tend to mitigate the existing risks by using the construction contract. It is hypothesized that the contractor’s initial impression of the owner-organization is a factor in the contractor’s perception of risk. It is further hypothesized that the initial impression is influenced by the content and context of the construction bid documents, which further influences the perceived risk and the bid strategy. The goal is to investigate the factors that influence contractors' impression of the owner-organization and to study the effects of contract document language and content in the impression formation process and subsequent development of a bid strategy. By better understanding the factors and relationships that influence impression formation and risk perceptions, it is expected that substantial time, money and unnecessary contention between these parties can be eliminated.

Show moreThis thesis studies the acoustics of a 793 seat multi-use theater. The theater is a fan shaped hall with acoustical properties that the building owners found to be wanting. The acoustics were first measured using eight microphones and a frequency-sweepproducing source. The measured reverberations were then used to design and calibrate a model of the space in CATT, an acoustical modeling program, after which a variety of other unmeasured qualities of the space were calculated from the CATT model. This information was used to design a plan to improve the acoustics of the theater; the hall’s volume was increased by moving the back balcony wall farther back in order to increase the reverberation, the ceiling was reshaped in order to more evenly distribute the first order reflected rays to the audience, and some of the walls were resurfaced to alter the frequency effects of the walls. All these alterations are feasible from an engineering perspective. The proposed changes were then modeled in CATT to confirm they would have the desired effects.
