Show moreThis project was done as a response to the thriving public performance community at the northern side of Grant park in Chicago, IL. As a former resident of the South Loop a rift was readily perceived between the North and South ends of the park in both venues for entertainment as well as general amenities. This project looked to fill a void on the south end of the park to create both a more welcoming outdoor space for the public but also to create a performance venue that could help bring business and pedestrian traffic to the southern end of the loop.

Show moreWhen people with serious mental illness fail to take prescribed psychiatric medications, they may be at risk for hospitalization or other negative outcomes. One theoretical model for explaining medication adherence behavior is self-determination theory (SDT). According to SDT, autonomously motivated behaviors are more likely to persist than are behaviors motivated by external forces. For people with serious mental illness, psychiatrists, mental health providers, family and peers are all potential external influencers on medication-related decisions. However, interactions with mental health professionals around medication adherence may be perceived as coercive by people with mental illness and professionals may fail to adequately address valid concerns of mental health consumers. This study aimed to examine how perceived autonomy support (the degree to which people with mental illness view others as encouraging towards selfdirected medication decisions) is related to medication adherence. Sixty-six individuals with serious mental illness completed measures of self-reported medication adherence, motivation to take medication and the perceived autonomy support of psychiatrists, mental health providers, peers and family members. Perceived autonomy support failed to predict one month adherence for any of potential social influencers. However, global autonomy support and autonomy support of psychiatrists were related to both autonomous motivation and depressive symptoms, such that participants who felt more supported in making autonomous decisions cited more internally motivated reasons for taking medications and were less depressed.

Show morePast research has examined the low employment rates in veterans with serious mental illness (SMI) (Zivin et al., 2011) and the research suggests that the benefits of employment for veterans are improved mental health symptoms, better finances, and better self-esteem (Bond et al., 2001). The specific relationship between employment and recovery from SMI in individuals has been examined (Drake et al., 2001; Bond et al., 2001; Modini et al., 2016). Previous research has not examined the correlation between recovery from SMI and employment, specifically in a population of veterans with SMI. The current study examines the relationship between recovery and employment of veterans with SMI, using the Recovery Assessment Scale (RAS) as a measure of recovery. A logistic regression analysis yielded that no relationship was found between recovery and employment status. Results of this study suggest there may be other factors affecting the relationship between these two factors. Moreover, there is the possibility that there is no relationship between recovery and employment.

Show moreHoarding disorder (HD) is characterized by significant difficulty discarding items, resulting in an accumulation of clutter. HD is a public health concern and is associated with treatment ambivalence (e.g., refusal to initiate treatment, dropout, and limited treatment compliance). While low insight and motivation may account for some of the treatment ambivalence, it also could be due to a number of other factors related to how HD is being perceived by others, such as stigma. Yet, there is very little research on the relationship between stigma and hoarding, and what these studies have shown is that HD is judged negatively by the general population (i.e., public stigma) in a variety of ways. However, despite these initial findings, there are no in-depth studies examining stigma of HD from the perspective of those with lived experience. Further, previous research of stigma and HD utilized stigma measures that were significantly modified from their original intent to measure severe mental illness, and it is possible that general measures of stigma may not capture the specific features of HD or public perceptions of HD. The present study is a qualitative analysis to investigate stigma pertinent to HD.

Show moreABSTRACT The chemistry and aromaticity of polycyclic benzenoid hydrocarbons have been a topic of intensive investigations since the early 19th century. The concept of aromaticity has played a crucial role in organic chemistry and related fields; and it expanded very rapidly for its ability to explain the stability, electronic structures and physical properties of π-conjugated molecules. Besides benzenoid structures, chemists have also investigated quinoidal systems, which have been shown to exhibit unique aromaticity and physical properties in the ground state. Notably, it is customary to draw quinoidal polycycles as a mixture of closed– and open–shell structures. While closed–shell quinoids do exhibit interesting physical and electronic properties, the open–shell forms can be related to benzenoids with the presence of radicals or unpaired electrons. In this context, it has been demonstrated that open–shell quinoids can have both singlet and triplet multiplicity in their ground state. In this thesis, I will demonstrate that this feature can be tuned/suppressed through clever design of the molecular framework that contains a quinoidal moiety. Often, quinoids can be labeled as aromatic like benzenoids or (anti)/pro-aromatic depending on the molecular framework. Before labeling a quinoidal compound as aromatic or (anti)/pro-aromatic, it is important to define the different aromaticity rules and their influence on the corresponding physical and electronic properties of the system(s) of interest. Chemists have relied on two main aromaticity rules (Hückel vs. Baird) to predict the nature, electronic, and physical properties of quinoidal structures and related systems. We proposed and synthesized novel quinoidal naphthalene derivatives (QDM) that exhibit “compromised” aromaticity in the ground state. A combination of computation and photophysical methods were employed to: i) decipher the reaction mechanism during the formation of the new poly-heterocyclic structures, ii) investigate their ground state and excited state opto-electronic properties, and iii) explore the nature and aromaticity of the corresponding excited state species. Additionally, the QDM was used as light-harvesting triplet sensitizers to achieve photon upconversion. This dissertation will first present a historical perspective in the investigation of various polycyclic aromatic systems that exhibit interesting aromaticity. Then, in chapter 2, I will detail the synthetic route and corresponding mechanism during the preparation of thio-QDM. The characterization and photophysical properties including the transient absorption spectra and excited state dynamics and kinetics of these chromophores will also be discussed. In chapter 3, I will discuss the use of QDM as light-harvesting energy donor to sensitize perylene and achieve triplet-triplet annihilation photon upconversion. The mechanism of this non-linear photophysical process will also be highlighted. Finally, the conclusion chapter will introduce future perspectives in the synthesis of derivatives of QDM.

Show morePhotodynamic therapy is a biomedical approach to treating specific types of cancerous tumor cells and harmful bacteria. The core principle of photodynamic therapy involves the usage of a photosensitizer, which is an agent with the capability of transforming molecular, triplet state oxygen, into a reactive oxygen species upon a reaction with near-infrared (NIR) light. The reactive oxygen species has been demonstrated to cause apoptosis among harmful cells without damaging cancer free cells. The effectiveness of photodynamic is highly dependent upon the identity of the photosensitizer; a powerful and efficient photosensitizer should be non-toxic, exhibit high light absorption capabilities, and should produce large amounts of the reactive oxygen species. A novel chromophore bis-iodo-dipyrrolonaphthyridine-dione was demonstrated to have all vital characteristics of an ideal photosensitizer, however produced low amounts of the reactive oxygen species of interest due to the chemical instability of a carbon-halogen bond present in the molecule. Various subsequent halogenations (bis-bromo and bis-chloro) completed in order to remedy this instability revealed specific regioselectivity in regards to the dipyrrolonaphthyridinedione parent that are exhibited upon substituents effects by the substrate, electronic effects exhibited by the reagents of interest, and overall photophysical characterization of the molecules.

Show moreDonor–acceptor chromophoric systems (D–A) are important scaffolds for several light-harvesting/initiated processes and devices, including light-emitting diodes, photo-catalytic/redox systems, and photovoltaic cells. It has been hypothesized that for efficient photophysical processes (viz. energy/charge-transfer or excited-state interactions); it is ideal to tether the donor and acceptor chromophores into molecular dyads. To this end, I devised and synthesized several dyads by tethering an organic triplet energy donor and various polyaromatic chromophores (e.g., perylene derivatives and anthracene derivatives) onto a conjugated-/non-conjugated-linker (phenylene- and triptycene- linker, respectively). During the 4-5 years of my Ph.D., I synthesized a total of five (5) dyads: o–, p–3, and dyads 3–5. These systems were fully characterized using different spectroscopy tools/techniques. The spectroscopy investigations of the dyads have allowed me to decipher two important energy transfer pathways: through-bond and through-space with the phenylene linker and only through-space energy with the triptycene linker. Furthermore, the investigations led to the discovery that geometrical features such as face-to-face (co-facial) or slip-stacked interactions between the donor and acceptors chromophores might dictate the dynamic/kinetic of light-induced energy transfer in the dyads. Findings from my graduate research project paved the way for developing molecular engineering studies for light-harvesting/modulation applications.Subsequently, I was able to employ the dyads of my interest to achieve intramolecular and intermolecular triplet energy transfer (TEnT) triplet-triplet annihilation-based photon upconversion (TTA-PUC).

Show moreDespite the increasing interest in gamification, a review of the gamification literature by Seaborn and Fels (2015) found that very few articles addressed the connection between theoretical considerations and empirical findings. Landers (2014) developed the theory of gamified learning to provide researchers with a framework to explore the effect of gamification on learning outcomes. The present study empirically tested the mediational process of Lander’s (2014) theory of gamified learning as well as proposed and tested an extension to examine the moderating role of an individual difference. Specifically, this study explored the moderating role of goal orientation on the mediational pathway from Assessment game attributes (i.e., badge, progress bar and combined) to self-efficacy to learning outcomes (i.e., declarative knowledge, skill demonstration and job-search self-efficacy). A gamified resume course was developed for this study on a gamification platform called Gametize. Participants were recruited through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk and instructed to respond to a pre-course questionnaire containing demographic information and the goal orientation assessment, they were then directed to the Gametize website to complete the gamified resume course after which they were re-directed to Qualtrics to complete a post-course questionnaire collecting job-search self-efficacy measures. Results show there was insufficient evidence to support the predictions based on the theory of gamified learning, and moreover the hypothesized moderating effect of goal orientation. Nonetheless, an interesting outcome of this study was the significant interaction of the badge condition with LGO and APGO, suggesting badges can help improve self-efficacy in a gamified learning experience. A unique contribution of this study is a blueprint for examining individual differences as an extension of the theory of gamified learning. Practical implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.

Show moreIn recent years, the role of online shoppers has transformed from a passive information receiver into an active shopping experience sharer, which makes reading the reviews left by peer shoppers a very important factor in consumer purchase decisions. However, fake online reviews are flooding websites and consumers are gradually becoming aware of that. This encourages consumers’ skepticism toward the credibility of online reviews. Using a structural equation modeling approach, this study analyzes the effect of consumers’ perceptions of shopping platform characteristics and online review trustworthiness on their purchase intention. Conditional process analysis was used to study the moderation effect of consumers’ skepticism during their shopping experience. A total of 1,004 valid responses were collected through an online survey administered by Qualtrics. Results indicate that consumers’ perceived platform trustworthiness contributes to the trustworthiness of its online reviews, which in turn both directly and indirectly increases purchase intention. Most parts of the proposed conceptual model are supported by empirical results with a few exceptions: consumer’s perceived review quantity is found to have a positive impact on perceived review quality and platform quality is found to be directly related to consumers' perceived risk. All re-specifications increase the model fit, followed by cross-validation that yields satisfactory model stability. With the establishment of measurement invariance, we discuss structural invariance across sub-groups and present some interesting findings. Results also show that all three dimensions of consumers’ skepticism negatively moderate the direct effect of the review’s trustworthiness on purchase intention. However, unlike the other two items (skepticism toward review trustworthiness and reviewer's motivation), consumers’ skepticism toward the reviewer's identity does not moderate the indirect causal path between review trustworthiness and purchase intention through perceived risk. We also adopt a different approach using latent moderated structural equations to support our findings. From a research perspective, this study contributes to our understanding of how consumers absorb information from online reviews to develop appropriate responses (e.g., purchase intention). From a practice perspective, this study provides insights on how platform and seller should respond to and properly manage consumers’ perceptions and skepticism toward online reviews.

Show moreThe purpose of the study was to extend organizational socialization research by exploring the impact of an orientation over time. Orientations and their impact have rarely been studied despite their popularity in practice. When viewed through the lens of the training literature, it was hypothesized that strategic orientations have a positive impact on newcomers by increasing transfer and its predictors (i.e., affective and cognitive learning outcomes). Two-hundred and nine newcomers with prior work experience participated by attending an organization-level orientation on their first two days with a new employer. Post-training learning outcomes were gathered immediately after orientation followed by eight weekly assessments of orientation transfer and newcomer adjustment (i.e., role clarity, social integration, values mastery). Using latent growth curve modeling, intraindividual differences in interindividual change in transfer and adjustment were examined and all trajectories were found to significantly vary within the sample. Findings suggest that transfer declines and then levels off around week four and the slower the decline, the greater the rate of adjustment. As predicted, initial levels of orientation transfer mediated the relationship between learning outcomes and rates of adjustment. Future research should continue to explore the role of transfer in newcomer adjustment, particularly to seek predictors of transfer trajectories which were not found in the present study.

Show moreBody image concern is not a foreign experience among men; the literature indicates that men, like women, experience negative thoughts about their body. It continues to be accepted that women experience greater body dissatisfaction than do men; however, based on prior research, this conclusion may be inaccurate. The primary aim of the present study was to examine whether the discrepancy between current body size and ideal body size differed by sex; the examination was conducted with the overall sample and then with only those men and women who preferred a slimmer physique. Self-esteem, internalization of the cultural-ideal, and body acceptance were examined in relation to weight concern, overall body dissatisfaction in women, muscularity dissatisfaction in men, and the body size discrepancy estimate. An additional purpose of the present study was the investigation of a potential consequence among women of misperceiving the body preferences of men. Also explored was whether the body size discrepancy, derived from a figural measure, is a valid measure of body dissatisfaction. Participants were 248 men and women college students who completed 10 self-report questionnaires and engaged in the Body Morph Assessment Program Version 2.0 (BMA 2.0), a computerized body image assessment procedure. Results indicated that the average body size discrepancy was greater for women in the overall sample; yet, in the restricted sample no sex difference was observed. In comparison to self-esteem and internalization of the cultural-ideal, body acceptance was found to be most consistently related to the aforementioned constructs. Also found was that the more slender a female figure women regarded as being most attractive to men the more they engaged in disordered eating. Results of the present study suggested that the discrepancy estimate likely measures a construct that is different than that measured by an evaluative measure of overall body dissatisfaction or weight concern.
