Show moreA facade is the interface between building and environment, between indoor and outdoor; therefore it has a functional quality – protection of the interior spaces, inhabitants, and services from the forces of the exterior surrounding environment. The facade is also the first component to be seen of any building; therefore it has a certain aesthetic quality that it needs to achieve. Currently, most facades are constructed of relatively heavy materials, requiring more structural material usage; and opaque materials, depriving the interior occupants of natural light. A textile facade, however, can provide a lightweight, lighttransmissive, and highly insulative exterior wall, while also offering versatility in the aesthetics. Although they are usually not considered to be a facade material, textiles can create a highly advanced alternative to the current facade solutions. Therefore, the thesis topic is to develop a future exterior wall system with advanced physical properties based on a textile facade.

Show moreRe-entry residential communities are an integral part of the criminal justice system. They focus on re-entry prepartion, including job training and drug treatment. These group homes are located in the community where inmates serve a period of time after being released from federal prison, in order to prepare for reentering the community. The inmates are required to go outside during the day to work or participate in community services. Law offenders are housed in penal establishments as a punishment not for punishment. Preservation of personality & prevention of deterioration call for as high a priority as efforts to bring about the inmates’ re-entry into the society. Hence the concept of correction, reformation & rehabilitation of prison inmates should come to the forefront of any community correction center’s adminstration.

Show moreThis project aimed to create efficient housing for the average American with the ability to customize their home to their own needs, lifestyle, and aesthetics. In addition, the feasibility of pre-fabricated portions of the home made this more realistic in terms of cost and the quickness of its construct-ability for each potential home owner.

Show moreThe purpose of this overlay is to provide the proper mechanics which allows a new type of home ownership while addressing current urban vacancy. The overlay attempts to be democratic. It establishes basic rules based on the existing block requirements, while also providing flexibility within. Residents voluntarily participate in the system, benefiting from the whole. Social interactions, block orientated activities, and housing arrangements expand and contract over time.

Show moree.N.U.P.H. is an alternative typology to current suburban tract home sprawl in the American southwest. Retail shops, offices, a supermarket, plaza, and residences are combined in a courtyard building that takes advantage of mountain views to the east and south through gradually sloping forms. As an alternative to suburban homes, emphasis is placed on the generous private outdoor living area of each residence, as well as amenities like the roof, sun, and pool decks. e.N.U.P.H. preserves the Phoenician’s desire for individuality and private space with the liveliness of a public plaza in a sustainable, efficient, and medium-density desert typology.

Show moreThe project is a revitalization and life center for people and their families living with diabetes. The goal of the facility is to provide a place to escape from everyday living. Elements to improve the knowledge and livelihoods of individuals who have been diagnosed with the disease will be implemented allowing the project to become a central node. Creating an environment that promotes relaxation and revitalization within an urban context is of great importance to the project. Partnerships with relative medical facilities will establish a client base and ease the access to the facility. If used successfully, the project could be a cornerstone to multiple facilities across the country.

Show moreThe idea of this project is to investigate the possibility of an underground airport with passenger facilities below and aircrafts above with minimum over-ground space. An important advantage is the possibility of loading and unloading passengers at two or more aircraft entrances thereby shortening the turn-around time of aircrafts. This accessibility can be more easily managed when approached from below. Furthermore, an underground facility is expected to provide several additional advantages: 1) greater freedom for aircrafts to get into position to efficiently load and unload; 2) potential for aircrafts to power-in and power-out of gate areas omitting the need for towing; 3) shorter walking distances for passengers due to greater compactness; 4) potential for an effective and efficient Automated People Mover (APM) system; 5) greater potential for systematic airport expansion when needed; 6) potentially reduced operating cost for ventilation, heating, and cooling. These advantages will answer many of the difficulties that current airports are experiencing today. However, in order to achieve these advantages, there are many important practical questions such as the spatial, environmental, structural aspects that need to be most carefully addressed. This project endeavored to investigate these important aspects as thoroughly as time and resources permit.

Show moreThe athletic facility at the Illinois Institute of Technology is currently insufficient for not only the school’s varsity athletes, but also for the school’s club teams and student body. A larger facility is needed to supplement the Keating Sports Center, which is small and currently the only athletic center for the campus. This new facility will include a lightweight and ingenuitive structural design in combination with architectural engineering ideals that challenges the Miesian typology of the rest of campus. My project will incorporate an original structural design and explore the use of suitable building enclosure materials and their thermal properties in order to make the building as efficient as possible.

Show moreThis project is a mixed-use high rise which will incorporate the program of the newly constructed high rise buildings of retail, hotel, and condominiums with the program of the existing Powerhouse Arts District, art gallery, auction house, art work spaces, and artist lofts. In order for this combination of program to occur and to retain developer interest in this high rise tower, relationships between the program were investigated. Typical “inefficient” or unleasable spaces in a traditional high rise were used as opportunities to incorporate these art district programs into the site. Artist lofts were design on the perimeter of the mechanical floors to take advantage of double height spaces as well as privacy. Art galleries, and an auction house was incorporated on the lower service level in order to take advantage of loading/unloading access. Art work spaces were designed around program which required column free spacing and a sunken art plaza was designed to add additional frontage to different retail and art programs located below grade. The design of both the high rise and its program intends to restore the deteriorating identity of the Powerhouse Arts District in Jersey City, NJ.

Show moreHowell Mountain is a distinct and unique location in the heart of Napa Valley California. The 45 acres site rests on the mountain’s south west slopes and is planted with high quality grapes used in the production of red wine. When the fog rolls off the ocean and into the Napa Valley, the weather on Howell Mountain is generally sunny and cool. The appellation owes its distinctive climate to the fact that it is positioned high above the valley floor. The program includes both the wine production facilities and the hospitality facilities for visitors. The driving concept of the project is to merge those two, often opposing, programmatic elements. From west to east, the site has a 43% grade change. By designing a gravity flow winery, this facility can take advantage of that significant slope.
