The exploration space contains 2 3d printers, 2 3d pens, 2 button makers (1 inch and 2.25 inch). In this presentation we discuss the creation and functioning of Reserves, Group Study Suite and Exploration space at the Galvin Library. We show by data and graphs the usage and impact of three services at the library.

Show moreThis presentation discusses rights issues faced by archives when building digital collections. Copyright, at times, is given a low priority during digitization project planning. Yet. determining copyright status, articulating rights statements, and providing access while protecting rights holders can be complicated, time-consuming tasks. Investigating rights is especially daunting for archives, given their great amount of unpublished materials and orphan works. As a result, there is a strong temptation to “blanket” digital collections with restrictive access and use statements. This presentation suggests methods for identifying copyright status, determining suitability for web distribution, and choosing appropriate rights statements using sample items from UASC's Institute of Design Records, 1937-1955,

Show moreAn Air Force technical report, known by two titles and closeted from public view not once but twice, was freed of restrictions via Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed by the staff of the Paul V. Galvin Library in 2015. This allowed the report to be scanned and posted online as part of Galvin's Contrails digital initiative. This presentation follows the history of the report and its importance in the field of hemodynamics. The report has been cited under one title at least 200 times, and under the other title at least 100 times, and continues to be cited under both titles to the present day. Theories are presented that explain the emergence of the two varying titles, the role of government restrictions on public availability of the report played in the continued inconsistency of citations, and the variation of the patterns of citations based on the type of publications in which the report was cited. In summation, this presentation will provide an anecdotal example of the damage inflicted on scientific research by arbitrary government restrictions on the availability of taxpayer funded research, illustrating the value of the successful FOIA request.

For libraries flexible available space affords the opportunity to provide a multitude of services needed by their patrons. Poster shows how we started with group study space with 4 study room and conference room. Now we have added an exploration space consisting of 2 3D printers, 2 button makes and 2 3D pens. The group study at Galvin Library is an on-going evolution of a flexible space that meets the needs of its patrons.
