Designed by the architecture firm Patton & Fisher, and constructed in 1886, Armour Flats was a 194-unit apartment building constructed to house Armour meatpacking company employees. It later provided living quarters for Armour Institute faculty. In 1907, six sections of the building were christened Chapin Hall for use by Armour Institute.
