Show moreUsing tweets posted with #SOPA and #PIPA hashtags and directed at members of Congress, we identify six strategies constituents employ when using Twitter to lobby their elected officials. In contrast to earlier research, we found that constituents do use Twitter to try to engage their officials and not just as a “soapbox” to express their opinions.

Show moreThis community center was designed to make connections between the different generations to create a truly united community, not just a neighborhood. Each generation has something that they can bring to others, but this rarely happens because each generation normally congregates together, which isolates themselves from the others. The community center provides opportunities to create these connections. These opportunities will be through Music, Fitness, Art and Education.

Show moreMONUMENTAL ADAPTATION: REIMAGINING THE OLD CHICAGO POST OFFICE Built in 1932, the Old Chicago Main Post Office was the largest post office in the world at three million square feet. It was designed to accommodate the extension of Congress Parkway and in 1953 the Eisenhower Expressway cut a void through the center of the building. Finally the Post Office was vacated in 1997 and remains unused to this day. This project proposes the adaptation of the Post Office into a hybrid fieldhouse that contains public recreation and retail space. This proposal keeps the Post Office public, utilizing income generated through retail to maintain the building for Chicagoans. Recreation program is inserted into voids carved out of the original building. Retail occupies the peripheral space, surrounding the voids.

However, conflict is reduced to a minimum level, by its softed surfaces and transparent material, as well as the recesses on the surfaces of the building.

Show more12 legal research training modules. The following are brief summaries of short legal research lessons that the library can offer. This takes a modular approach where faculty can pick and choose and even combine modules. For example, one instructor may ask a librarian to come in for Getting Started and Case law on the same day, while another may want a librarian to come in and teach only Terms and Connectors. For each module, I give the name, student learning outcomes, suggested pairing of assignment/time in the semester, a summary of teaching activities, and the time I expect the module to take. In general, these class sessions take the form of a short talk and/or discussion to introduce the topic and teach some basic concepts, followed by group or individual work to practice researching while the instructor and the librarian walk around in the room, and some time to discuss the results as a group. Although the librarian takes the lead, faculty can expect to participate in the discussion. The librarians have found that the students are more engaged in research sessions when their instructor participates.

Show moreThis presentation discusses rights issues faced by archives when building digital collections. Copyright, at times, is given a low priority during digitization project planning. Yet. determining copyright status, articulating rights statements, and providing access while protecting rights holders can be complicated, time-consuming tasks. Investigating rights is especially daunting for archives, given their great amount of unpublished materials and orphan works. As a result, there is a strong temptation to “blanket” digital collections with restrictive access and use statements. This presentation suggests methods for identifying copyright status, determining suitability for web distribution, and choosing appropriate rights statements using sample items from UASC's Institute of Design Records, 1937-1955,
