Show moreThe use of solar chimneys to improve natural ventilation in buildings has been shown to yield energy savings while maintaining thermal comfort in some climate zones. However, one disadvantage is that the ability to control passive ventilation with solar chimneys is often limited by temporal variations of building function and diurnal weather patterns. The unique thermal properties of phase change materials (PCMs) may provide opportunities to manage some of the limitations of solar chimney strategies in buildings through the timed storage and release of thermal energy, which can aid in minimizing daytime heat gains and increasing the effectiveness of nighttime flushing by natural ventilation. This work explores the potential of PCMs combined with solar chimneys to support the passive ventilation of buildings using whole building energy simulation. Results are intended to inform architects and engineers on best practices for incorporating PCMs in buildings with solar chimneys. A model of a prototype office building designed to ASHRAE Standard 90.1 was developed in EnergyPlus and investigated in five U.S. climate zones. A total of 1023 energy simulations were performed to address the following research questions: (1) In what U.S. climate zone is the use of PCMs most appropriate? (2) Can PCMs improve night flushing ventilation when used with a solar chimney? (3) What are the optimal locations for installation of PCMs in building and solar chimney construction in order to provide optimal cooling load reductions? and (4) How do PCM properties influence cooling load reductions? Results demonstrate that the solidification and melting process of PCMs can indeed be used to prolong natural ventilation for night flushing in the evening and nighttime, particularly in climate zones with large diurnal outdoor temperature fluctuations. Results also suggest the following: (1) the optimal location for installation of PCMs in most climates is within the structure of south-facing envelope assemblies; (2) the PCM melting temperature should be equal to or greater than the zone set point temperature; (3) thicker PCMs can yield slightly more cooling energy savings than thinner PCMs; and (4) the thermal conductivity of PCMs does not appear to have a substantial influence on performance.

Show moreThe Chinese Dream is President Xi Jinping's integrative and transformative vision for China, with the goals to achieve "a great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation". However, the realities in China seem to be far from the conditions of a dream. The emerging Chinese middle class are eager to join the army of slaves to their impossible mortgages for their bedroom town homes, in fulfillment of what the modern Chinese psychodynamics have collectively decided to be a necessity in pursuance of a good life. So, where are the capacities of the Chinese Dream for the individuals in this modern times? The dream has to address the deteriorating sense of belonging and home of the millions of working middle class, before it can even consider itself a collective effort. The individuals should be encouraged to dream and strive, in order for this to happen, the fundamentals of a good living environment must be collectively accessible. Studies on the collective forms of housing in China's recent history had shed light onto the importance of urban elements such as the hutong network and socialist work unit in social control. However, a case study on China's gated housing models had also opened up discussions on what a complete razing of culture, history and forced resettlements had done in the name of providing quantities of housing within China's neoliberal shift. This thesis explores the elements of providing quality living environments for this group of people that have been called upward-mobile, tech-savvy and entrepreneurial. With the idea of owning a house becoming increasingly important to the Chinese middle class, architecture attempts to bridge gaps between the realities of the sub-par housing towers in gated peripheral areas and the dying traditions of collectivism. By looking at the success of the hutong and danwei dormitories as spaces for social order as well as spaces for commercial and social interaction, a translation of this is deemed to be emulated in modern housing. A super-hybrid of dwellings and designed "programmatic infection" is bound to happen by studying the development of "dream-like" housing prototypes in history.

Show moreAs a doctoral candidate, this writer has focused on the Romantic Movement of 19th century France, where the arts mutually influenced each other, just as in ancient Greece and Rome. This research highlights the interrelationships of the Arts to Architecture by examining artists such as Hugo in drama, Gautier in literature, Delacroix in painting, Chopin and Adam in music, Noverre in dance and Garnier in architecture. Although Noverre’s specialty was dance, he believed that theater buildings were first monuments to the arts. For Garnier, 100 years later, the Arts and Architecture were not separate identities. They complemented and enhanced one another. Both books, Observations sur la Construction d’une Nouvelle Salle de l’Opera by Jean-Georges Noverre and Le Theatre by Charles Garnier, were publications translated extensively from French to the English language as primary sources. In designing a theater building, the architect is responsible for synthesizing and translating myriad information in order to create an appropriate and responsive language. An invaluable knowledge of technical considerations - set design, lighting, backstage equipment, sightlines, acoustics and facilities for performers - is critical, as is balancing the client’s concerns and the user/spectator’s needs. As performance expresses a cultural instinct for communicative involvement, this writer believes that a theater building, itself, is a reflection of the arts. It is art, therefore, that inextricably shapes the programs and designs of our theater buildings. The Palais Garnier, completed in 1875 for the Paris Opéra and its associated Paris Opéra Ballet, is thought to mirror the cultural complexity of the age. Before this time, the Paris Opéra was housed in the Salle Le Peletier, a temporary building with inadequate facilities that did not reflect the existing, lavish, highly skilled art that was performed. Garnier’s travels to ancient sites in Greece and Rome resulted in his classic book, Le Théatre. By writing, he immersed himself in the study of the physical qualities of the theater, and it eventually became his architecture. The form and character of the theater buildings studied reflect the changing social structures, technology and patronage that sponsored them. The Palais Garnier reflects a unique intersection of the arts, along with the political, social and economic influences of that time. Musicians turned their attention toward the expressions of intense feelings that were influenced by poetry and the visual arts. The Palais Garnier, with its grandeur and opulence, became its own “performance”. The multi-disciplinary nature of architecture and the study of the interrelationships of the arts can inform creativity. Just like the timeless, majestic Palais Garnier in Paris, in 19th century France, new architectural structures can become their own profound monumental and memorable “performances” for future generations.

Show moreC-ward is the neighborhood (in Mumbai) that was designed and developed around 1940 and thereafter there has been no or very little improvement in infrastructure, which has led to narrow street, unsafe pedestrian and limited open space. C-ward in one of the most prime real-estate location considering it right next to financial district , close to major train station and close to Shoreline. ROMF (Remaking of Mumbai Federation) has taken the initiative to develop the C-ward and the project site part of ROMF development area. City centers have always been source of density because of scarcity of land. The sensible and effective use of such land would be to build vertical (high-rise) and also to have the possibility of expansion for the future development. A mixed use high rise development diversifies the use of space within a single building structure. Combination of living, entertainment, shopping and lodging in single urban structure, helps to utilize the full potential of an urban site.

Show moreArchitecture is significantly associated with people. Because architecture is design of life, activities and spaces for people. Therefore, architectural behavior does not have only a physical impact but also social and economic impact on the area. Especially the architectural elements can help to development an area and provide an enhanced economic aspect, cultural activities and social communication to inhabitants in underdeveloped or backward area. The Garfield Station Area Rehabilitation Project is a grand scale development project that comprehends urban scheme, site master plan and architectural design phases. The goal of the project, consistent throughout all phases, is to transform the abandoned Washington Park Community into a recovered, preserved and developed community with its rich history by promoting cultural, social and economical incentives to be linked to the Hyde Park Community.

Show moreA facade is the interface between building and environment, between indoor and outdoor; therefore it has a functional quality – protection of the interior spaces, inhabitants, and services from the forces of the exterior surrounding environment. The facade is also the first component to be seen of any building; therefore it has a certain aesthetic quality that it needs to achieve. Currently, most facades are constructed of relatively heavy materials, requiring more structural material usage; and opaque materials, depriving the interior occupants of natural light. A textile facade, however, can provide a lightweight, lighttransmissive, and highly insulative exterior wall, while also offering versatility in the aesthetics. Although they are usually not considered to be a facade material, textiles can create a highly advanced alternative to the current facade solutions. Therefore, the thesis topic is to develop a future exterior wall system with advanced physical properties based on a textile facade.

Show moreThe idea of this project is to investigate the possibility of an underground airport with passenger facilities below and aircrafts above with minimum over-ground space. An important advantage is the possibility of loading and unloading passengers at two or more aircraft entrances thereby shortening the turn-around time of aircrafts. This accessibility can be more easily managed when approached from below. Furthermore, an underground facility is expected to provide several additional advantages: 1) greater freedom for aircrafts to get into position to efficiently load and unload; 2) potential for aircrafts to power-in and power-out of gate areas omitting the need for towing; 3) shorter walking distances for passengers due to greater compactness; 4) potential for an effective and efficient Automated People Mover (APM) system; 5) greater potential for systematic airport expansion when needed; 6) potentially reduced operating cost for ventilation, heating, and cooling. These advantages will answer many of the difficulties that current airports are experiencing today. However, in order to achieve these advantages, there are many important practical questions such as the spatial, environmental, structural aspects that need to be most carefully addressed. This project endeavored to investigate these important aspects as thoroughly as time and resources permit.

Show moreThe athletic facility at the Illinois Institute of Technology is currently insufficient for not only the school’s varsity athletes, but also for the school’s club teams and student body. A larger facility is needed to supplement the Keating Sports Center, which is small and currently the only athletic center for the campus. This new facility will include a lightweight and ingenuitive structural design in combination with architectural engineering ideals that challenges the Miesian typology of the rest of campus. My project will incorporate an original structural design and explore the use of suitable building enclosure materials and their thermal properties in order to make the building as efficient as possible.
