Show moreA system and method for the controlled in situ heat processing of hydrocarbonaceous earth formations involves the application of electromagnetic energy at a selected frequency or at selected frequencies to a waveguide structure formed by electrodes bounding a particular volume of hydrocarbonaceous material. Terminating one end of the structure with different impedances at different times produces electric field standing waves of different respective phase at that end at a selected frequency. Two standing waves substantially 90.degree. out of phase in formations having relatively uniform dielectric properties result in substantially uniform application of heating power if the product of the amplitude-squared of the electric field standing wave and dwell time is substantially the same in each of the two modes. Feeding the line at both ends provides partial offset for attenuation. Various desired controlled heating patterns other than uniform may be effected by utilizing different dwell times or applied fields. Different frequencies provide further flexibility, particularly where the line is terminated differently at the respective frequencies. Energy at the different frequencies may be applied simultaneously.

Show moreActive flow control (AFC) has the potential to improve the efficiency of systems that involve both internal and external fluid flow. The primary driver in AFC is the expectation that the control will result in significant performance benefits at the system level with all trade-offs factored in. Successful application to aircraft systems can produce lighter, stealthier, agile aircraft with increased range, payload and a muffled acoustic signature. The design of an AFC system requires knowledge of flow phenomena and the selection of appropriate actuators, sensors and a control algorithm. The present overview focuses on actuators. Examples of flow and noise control presented here are restricted to open-loop systems. Various aspects of actuator utilization include actuator output characterization, exploiting resonances (plenum, structural or aeroacoustic) to enhance actuator amplitude and the different modes of actuation. A brief description of a high-bandwidth actuator is also provided, followed by a variety of application examples including edgetone suppression, cavity noise suppression, impingement noise suppression and jet mixing enhancement. The review concludes with a description of the successful application of AFC to the exhaust plume from an aircraft engine (JT8D).

The concept of phase plane analysis is generalized to include all orders of reaction rate expressions, a broader range of system parameters, and is extended to the case of autothermal reactors. An industrial hydrocarbon oxidation reactor model and an autothermal CO oxidation reactor model have been used to illustrate and to evaluate the analysis method. The approach presented here is appealing since the region of safe inlet temperatures is determined explicitly and the region of safe operation can be optimized with respect to the reactor design parameters.

Show moreCurrent insulin therapy for patients with type 1 diabetes often results in high variability in blood glucose concentrations and may cause hype rglycemic/hypoglycemic episodes. Closing the glucose control loop with a fully automated electro-mechanical pancreas will improve the quality of life for insulin-dependent patients. An adaptive control algorithm is proposed to keep glucose concentrations within normoglycemic range and dynamically respond to glycemic challenges. A model-based control strategy is used to calculate the required insulin infusion rate, while the model parameters are recursively tuned. The algorithm handles delays associated with insulin absorption, time-lag between subcutaneous and blood glucose concentrations, and variations in inter/intra-subject glucose-insulin dynamics. Simulation results for simultaneous meat and physiological disturbances are demonstrated for subcutaneous insulin infusion.

This article investigates the impact of item-level characteristics on the criterion-related validity of the Five-Factor Model (FFM) (as a personality instrument) as a predictor of job-related behavior. Two self-report FFM measures were correlated with workplace observer ratings to derive mean validity scores for each of the FFM items. A panel of judges then rated these items on the following item characteristics: ambiguity, abstractness, comprehensibility, wording, negation, transparency and social desirability. As hypothesized, social desirability, negation, wording and transparency were correlated with criterion-related validity. Contrary to the study hypothesis, abstractness was found to be positively correlated with criterion-related validity.

Show moreChronic low-grade inflammation is an emerging risk factor for chronic disease development and complication. Strawberries, rich in anthocyanins, attenuate meal-induced postprandial increases in inflammation and oxidative stress as well as improved post-meal insulin responses. Anthocyanins are considered to be responsible in part, for their health benefits. The bioavailability of anthocyanins is low and short-lived. The relationship between strawberry intake timing of consumption relative to a meal and the metabolic-, inflammatory- and oxidative stress responses that ensue are not known. Therefore, this study aimed to determine if the strawberry consumption timing would influence meal-induced oxidative-immuno-metabolic outcomes. Fourteen overweight (BMI 26 ± 2 kg/m2) healthy adults (aged 25 ± 4 years) participated in a 3-arm, placebo-controlled, crossover clinical trial. Subjects came to the research clinical on 3 different occasions for 10 hours (h) and received 3 study drinks: 2 hours before a meal, with the meal, and 2 hours after the meal. A strawberry drink was given at 1 of the 3 time points and control drinks at the alternative time points. Plasma analytes of glucose, insulin and triglycerides were measured over the 10 h along with oxidized low density lipoprotein, a marker of oxidative damage, and interleukin-6, a marker of inflammation. Results were compared between strawberry “timing” groups and with a demographically matched reference group (n=10, BMI 27 ± 2 kg/m2and aged 27 ± 4 years) that was provided only control drinks (no strawberry). Study result showed a significant reduction in postprandial blood glucose when strawberry was consumed before the meal compared to having the strawberry drink with or after the meal, p < 0.05. Compared to the reference group, eating strawberries, regardless of the consumption time, attenuated postprandial blood glucose without additional insulin, suggesting improved sensitivity. Interleukin-6was significantly lower after consuming the strawberry drink before the meal (p=0.048) and modestly lower after consuming the strawberry drink with (p=0.116) or after the meal (p=0.098) compared to the reference group. This study provides data suggesting that strawberries have a role in glycemic control and attenuating the pro-inflammatory effect of a modern diet. There may be particular advantages when consumed before a meal.

Show moreUnder certain conditions, shock-containing jets produce an intense tone referred to as screech. Screech was discovered about half a century ago by Alan Powell in England. Here I recount developments in supersonic jet screech - from Powell's first observation in 1951 to now. During this period more than 200 papers have been published - many offering only incremental advances. This paper provides a concise screech resource including a historical perspective, a summary of recent developments and a critical assessment of the state of the art. Topics include modulation of instability waves by shocks, shock-cell models and screech frequency prediction models, unsteady shock motions and clues about their role in shock noise generation. also. detailed nearfield measurements and computer simulation methods now available are discussed. However, despite the advances, screech amplitude prediction remains an elusive but increasingly important goal not only due to concerns about sonic fatigue failure of aircraft structures but because knowledge gained by the study of screech can be applied to a variety of resonant flow situations, including jet impingement, cavity resonance, and closed-loop active flow control. Subsequently, smartphone applets become more and more complicated, protocols like 3G,LTE,4G have also been improved to satisfy people’s increasing requirement. This leads to an exponentially increase in energy consumption. However, the power of smartphone battery is limited, and thus how to improve energy efficiency and extend the life-time of smartphone battery becomes a critical issue. In wireless local area networks (WLANs), switching to low-power sleep mode to save energy is common. Power-Saving mode (PSM) was one of the standard algorithm in order to save energy. This feature allows devices to switch the WiFi on and off several times a second. However, research papers have shown that PSM is not really efficient in practice, and in many cases (e.g. multiple stations), can actually degrade performance. This sleep-scheduling algorithm, derived from GreenCall Algorithm is demonstrated to have lower packets loss rate while achieving higher energy efficiency than that of the existing GreenCall Algorithm.

Show moreEvery generation builds its own city in terms of the social, economic, technological and cultural conditions of its time. We have the opportunity to put forward a new model of urban development that responds to the new conditions of habitability for the start of the 21st century. The fact is that we no longer live in a compact metropolis, but in a discontinuous metapolis, an extensive territory criss-crossed by road and rail transport routes and occupied by kernels of population, logistics centers, industry parks and shopping and leisure centers around which people (local, national and foreign) move according to their needs. In this situation it is as necessary to propose strategies for the renewal and compaction of the urban centers as for the integration and protection of the elements that constitute the natural and geographical landscape of our environment. The challenge of constructing a new neighborhood on the boundary between the city of Valencia, in Spain, and it’s orchard (the famous ‘Huerta’) will enable to explore this open and dynamic new hybrid condition of the territory and to propose a new model for the construction of the urban fringes. I would like to address the challenge of integrating the landscape that surrounds the city of Valencia, the landscape we have inherited from our ancestors. To do this it is necessary to reformulate the very concepts of urbanism with which traditionally is operated in the city. The word 'urbanism' was coined by Ildefons Cerdà to designate the science of urban growth, a process based on the implanting of a rational grid, superposed on an agricultural layout, in which the owners of a plot of agricultural x land had transferred to them the ownership of a plot of urban land eligible for development. It is this principle that has informed and overseen the urban expansions of the 19th century and the modern city of the 20th, the typically North American low-density city and the historical revivalism of the end of the last century. But the challenge facing urbanism now is to manage to make the city grow, integrating into our developments the anthropological and cultural elements of the landscape that surrounds us - constructing and conserving are accomplished in the same act. As against the old city-country dichotomy I now propose to bring about an intelligent transition between these two formerly antagonistic modes of dwelling, an integration that lets us recognize the social and cultural value of -in this case- the landscape of the Huerta of Valencia and incorporate it into the urban fabric by means of appropriate management strategies. Given an increasingly uniform global society, we need to recognize the specific cultural and landscape values of each territory as fundamental to the quality of life of the people who live there and to reaffirm a distinct identity that can provide a competitive advantage. Because of this, in contrast to the town planning of the 20th century, conceived on the basis of the speed of the car, I would like to propose a new model of 'urban-agricultural' development that guarantees the creation of a high-quality local environment. More than designing a city, I would like to create habitable environments that effectively resolve the different factors that give people the assurance habitability at different scales: the neighborhood, the landscape and the home.
