Show moreRecent military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have resulted in an increase in the number of blast related traumatic brain injury (TBI) cases, currently estimated in excess of 300,000. Current neuroimaging methods, including MRI and CT, are generally not sensitive enough to diagnose blast TBL This research represents several advancements in the understanding of long-term TBI related changes as well as imaging comorbid neurocognitive deficits and psychopathologies. The multi modal approach was taken to leverage the differing sensitivities of each imagmg modality to better identify neuroimaging changes associated with blast TBL T l-weighted MRI was utilized to assess cortical thickness reduction in the TBI subjects, resulting in right temporal lobe decreases that were associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and neurobehavioral symptom indices. Utilizing positron emission tomography (PET), several areas of metabolic change were associated with blast TBI, PTSD, repetitive head injury, and TBI severity. Functional MRI was used to assess working memory deficit, demonstrating relatively normal function in the mild TBI subject, except for at higher cognitive loads; whereas the moderate TBI subjects demonstrated a trend of dysfunction at most levels of cognitive load. Fractional anisotropy (FA) changes were assessed using diffusion tensor imaging, however there was no resulting statistical significance due to differences in the locations of single subject FA changes that could not be realized at the group level using standard analyses. Investigation into multimodal searchlight to integrate the sensitivities of each imaging modality into a single statistical measure, provided enhanced sensitivity to TBI-induced changes in neuroimaging versus single modal searchlight and identified several clusters of change most notably in the cerebellum, temporal lobes, brainstem, and internal capsule. Through a multimodal approach we have shown several areas of damage and dysfunction associated with blast TBI in subjects greater than one year post injury. This research is important due to the large numbers of subjects currently experiencing long-term post concussive symptoms. Our findings show that both TBI and PTSD playa large role in the changes identified on neuroimaging. This research can provide information to assist in the understanding , diagnosis , and treatment of blast TBI.

Show moreThis paper provides an example of the application of Pressure Sensitive Paint (PSP) to complex internal suspersonic flows and demonstrates the relationship between ejector wall pressure and aerodynamic performance. Details of such jet mixer-ejector nozzles are relevant to jet noise reduction programs. Several ejector configurations with straight, convergent, and divergent side walls were used in our experiments. The side-wall that was painted with PSP was also instrumented with an array of 156 pressure taps connected to Electronically Scanned Pressure (ESP) modules, enabling simultaneous measurement of "true" reference pressures. The PSP results agreed very well with the "true" reference pressures and also provided a detailed map of the complicated pressure patterns that could not be detected using the pressure taps. Finally, we also demonstrated the direct relationship between ejector side-wall pressure distribution and ejector performance characteristics such as exit mean flow uniformity, pumping, and thrust augmentation.

Show moreDestructive communication and hostile interactions between spouses has been found to elicit large increases in systolic blood pressure, heart rate, and cardiac output in patients (Nealey-Moore et al., 2007; Smith et al., 2009). This negatively impacts the cardiovascular health of the receiving partner. The present study was designed to assess the relationship between hostile criticism and patient report of marital satisfaction, physical health, and depressive symptomatology in a sample of couples participating in a cardiac risk reduction intervention. The current study uses archival data obtained during the Partners for Life cardiac risk reduction intervention for couples (Sher et al., 2002). Additionally, further observationally coded data was collected from video taped conversations recorded for the purposes of the Partners for Life study. Pearson correlation analyses indicate moderate negative relationships between Criticism and Marital Adjustment. Implications of these and other results are discussed.

Show moreDue to increased fuel efficiency and lower cost/mile feature, electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) are becoming more and more popular. It is estimated that the sale of electric vehicles will reach 3.8 million by 2020, while hybrid vehicles will grow to 4% by 2020 from their current share of 2%. To meet this target, EV an HEV motors, the core energy conversion components, should not only satisfy specific requirements in performance and efficiency but also constrain vibration. This necessitates the analysis of vibration in traction motors for EV/HEV application. The primary objective of this dissertation is to characterize and compare the electromagnetic and vibrational behavior of typical traction motors (PMSM with distributed winding, PMSM with concentrated winding, IM, and SRM) over a wide torque speed range. For this purpose, weak-coupled analysis of electromagnetic force and structure are performed in ANSYS environment. The secondary aim of this dissertation is to develop a rotor position related variable switching frequency pulse width modulated (PWM) strategy to ameliorate the acoustic noise due to high frequency harmonic current. Switching frequency is modified online to adapt current ripple and vibration requirement, thus ameliorate the acoustic noise. It is expected that this strategy with variable switching frequency has the advantages of spreading the vibration spectrum and reducing switching losses. Experimentally verification is also performed. At the end of this dissertation, characterization of vibration behavior of switch reluctance machine with higher number of rotor poles than stator poles is performed.

Show moreThe present study investigated how reading fluency is related to social desirability and academic self-concept during a critical period in reading development for children. It was predicted that social desirability would be a better predictor of oral reading fluency, while academic self-concept would be a better predictor of silent reading fluency. Participants were sixty third-grade students from Catholic schools in a large metropolitan area. All children completed measures of oral reading fluency, silent reading fluency, academic self-concept, and social desirability. Multiple regression and dominance analysis supported the hypothesized relationships. Social desirability had a significant negative relationship with oral reading fluency, while academic self-concept was unrelated to oral reading fluency. In addition, academic self-concept had a significant positive relationship with silent reading fluency, while social desirability had a smaller, but still significant, negative relationship with silent reading fluency. The present findings suggest that psychosocial factors like social desirability and academic self-concept may help identify children who are at risk for reading underachievement. Future research should use a longitudinal design to examine if measuring social desirability and academic self-concept in third grade can predict important outcomes, such as reading fluency in fourth grade or beyond.

Nuts have been identified as an increasingly common vector for human salmonellosis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of environmental factors and Salmonella enterica serotypes on the survival and attachment of this pathogen on the surface of low moisture, raw in shell nuts. Two S. enterica strains (Enteritidis and Typhimurium) were individually tested on three different food samples (almonds, hazelnuts and black peppers) at 4°C or 25°C for up to 14 days. The storage relative humidity was maintained at 20±2% throughout the study. Nut samples were collected at 0, 1, 3, 7 and 14 days. The population of bacteria was calculated based on the plate count data. The results showed that S. Typhimurium attached and survived better than S. Enteritidis on almonds, hazelnuts and black peppers at both 4 and 25°C. A lower storage temperature led to a better survival of Salmonella on raw nuts during storage. The surface characteristics of hazelnuts resulted in the least Salmonella attachment compared to almond and black pepper.

Recently we discovered a new family of functional Bax isoforms generated specifically in certain tumors; one of them is Bax 2 . In this thesis, I characterized the properties of Bax 2 protein by comparing with the parental Bax 2. Bax 2 was cloned into a GFP mammalian expression vector and transfected into the bax knockout cells. I examined Bax 2 expression, cellular distribution, and ability to induce cell death. The results show that the Bax 2 protein aggregated as granules around the nucleus in cytoplasm and induced more cell death than that from previously studied Bax 2. The results implicate that cancer patients with Bax 2 isoform might have better prognosis or response to treatment.

Show moreThis paper provides a unique, detailed evaluation of the acoustics and aerodynamics of a rectangular multi-element supersonic jet mixer-ejector noise suppressor. The performance of such mixer-ejectors is important in aircraft engine applications for noise suppression and thrust augmentation. In contrast to most prior experimental studies on ejectors that reported either aerodynamic of acoustic data, the present work documents both types of data. Information on the mixing, pumping, ejector wall pressure distribution, thrust augmentation and noise suppression characteristics of four simple, multi-element, jet mixer-ejector configurations is presented. The four configurations included the effect of ejector area ratio (AR = ejector cross-sectional area/total primary nozzle area) and the effect of non-parallel ejector walls. The configuration that produced the best noise suppression characteristics has also been studied in detail. The present results show that ejector configurations that produced the maximum pumping (secondary (induced) flow normalized by the primary flow) also exhibited the lowest wall pressures in the inlet region, and the maximum thrust augmentation. When cases having the same total mass flow were compared, one found that noise suppression trends corresponded with those for pumping (per unit secondary area). Surprisingly, the mixing (quantified by the peak Mach number, and flow uniformity) at the ejector exit exhibited no relationship to the noise suppression at moderate primary jet fully expanded M-j (the Mach number that would have been attained under isentropic expansion). However, the noise suppression dependence on the mixing was apparent at M-j = 1.6. The above observations are justified by noting that the mixing at the ejector exit is not a strong factor in determining the radiated noise when noise produced internal to the ejector dominates the noise field outside the ejector. Show moreBiodesulfurization is a promising field that can be applied to the processing of crude oil for removing dibenzothiophene (DBT) and its derivatives. A thermophilic bacterial strain Paenibacillus naphthalenovorans (32O-Y) was found to metabolize DBT as sole sulfur source. Another thermophilic strain Paenibacillus apiaries (32O-W) which cannot utilize DBT, however, was found to increase the desulfurization activity of 32O-Y in mixed 32O-Y+W culture in minimal-DBT medium at temperatures between 45 and 50 °C. In order to increase the desulfurization activity of these strains, we genetically engineered strain 32O-Y to express Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb). VHb is the first hemoglobin found in bacteria and has been used to increase the growth and product yields various cells. The VHb gene (vgb) was successfully cloned into shuttle vector pNW33N. 32O-Y was successfully transformed with pNW33N-vgb while 32O-W was not. Compared to untransformed 32O-Y, 32O-Y[pNW33N-vgb] grew slower and reached a lower maximum OD600 when cultured in minimal-DBT medium at 45 °C. However, the Gibbs assay showed that VHb expression in 32O-Y increased its desulfurization activity by 18%. Thus, VHb can help 32O-Y metabolizing DBT while it might not promote growth. A series of high temperatures cultures need to be conducted to select an even more thermophilic strain which can fulfill the 60 °C requirement of industrial process. The VHb mutant (vgbM3) was also studied, which was previously found correlated with increased growth of E. coli DH5α, compared with the effect of wild type VHb. The effect that the mutant amino acids in VHbM3 was determined. Plasmid pUC- vgbM3 was obtained and successfully transformed to DH5α. After sequencing, two copies of vgbM3 were found in the plasmid. In order to study only one copy of vgbM3, x primers were designed for amplification. Fragment vgbM3 was successfully inserted into vector pUC18, followed by successful transformation into DH5α. Cell free extract was obtained from strains DH5α, DH5α[pUC8:16] and DH5α[pUC18-vgbM3] for CO-difference assay. As expected, DH5α expressed no hemoglobin. DH5α[pUC8:16] expressed wild type hemoglobin at 20 nmol/gm wet weight, while DH5α[pUC18-vgbM3] expressed mutant hemoglobin at 4 nmol/gm wet weight. Oxygen dissociation constant determination of VHbM3 will be the next step.

Show moreThe effects of radio frequency electric field peaking in the earth formations surrounding a conductor excited by radio frequency energy in the controlled in situ heat processing of hydrocarbonaceous earth formations are mitigated by providing an inert buffer region around the conductor to which radio frequency electromagnetic energy is supplied to produce an electric field within the earth formations. A portion of the earth formations is removed to accommodate insertion of the conductor at a desired location in the earth formations and to provide a buffer region between the conductor and the surrounding earth formations. The conductor is supported at the desired location in spaced relationship to the surrounding earth formations, the buffer region encompassing the principal region of the electric field enhancement region around the conductor where the probability of breakdown in the earth formations over the period of application of the radio frequency energy would be above a tolerable level. The buffer region is filled with dielectric material having an electric field breakdown level greater than that of the surrounding earth formation medium such that the probability of breakdown in the buffer region over the period of application of the radio frequency energy is tolerable. Preferably the filler medium has a power dissipation characteristic less than that of the surrounding earth formations.
