Show moreWater shortages will be a global problem by the year 2025. With the Great Lakes Basin accounting for 95% of the fresh water in the United States it will soon become our most valuable natural resource. In re-defining urban relationships to the Great Lakes a healthy, ecologically stable, and regenerative water system can become our greatest national asset. Providing a prototype solution for one of these urban areas (Traverse City, MI) may set a precedent for long term protection of the Great Lakes. Show less

Show moreMadison, WI is dominated by two main forces; the state government and the University of Wisconsin. These two institutions are linked by State Street, a pedestrian and bike corridor that serves as the main public gathering space for the city. The new Central Public Library along this strip will provide a free, democratic space for all Madison citizens. Beyond collecting books and storing media, the Madison Library offers opportunities for gatherings and informational exchanges 24 hours a day. Show less

Show moreDemolishing a concrete building that is structurally sound is ecologically wasteful and irresponsible. With the many advantages concrete offers and rising energy costs, there needs to be a way that existing and structurally sound, concrete buildings can be reused. This explored method for concrete reuse depends heavily on technological advances in the foreseeable future that allow for the process to be accomplished efficiently and for the material to be preserved for a longer period of time. Show moreManhattan’s expansion is limited by its context; for decades its growth has been upward and inward. It fills the remaining gaps and leftover spaces in its own fabric. As time presses on, this layered context grows in density, accumulating a thickness around the alley, the fire escape, and the rooftop. By resisting the city’s tendency to stifle, one can gather these moments of Manhattan’s past, and channel the interplay of space and narrative. Show less

Show moreThe proposed master’s project is the exploration of how architectural planning and design can improve and increase efficiency in transitional housing during emergency relief and/or conflict related situations. The project proposal developed through design exploration of several prototypes that would not only be minimal but will also be culturally and climatically adaptive among other things. After a thorough select ion process, concentration was given to arid/dry climate and the area select ed for study was Darfur, Sudan. Show less

Show moreC-ward is the neighborhood (in Mumbai) that was designed and developed around 1940 and thereafter there has been no or very little improvement in infrastructure, which has led to narrow street, unsafe pedestrian and limited open space. C-ward in one of the most prime real-estate location considering it right next to financial district , close to major train station and close to Shoreline. ROMF (Remaking of Mumbai Federation) has taken the initiative to develop the C-ward and the project site part of ROMF development area. City centers have always been source of density because of scarcity of land. The sensible and effective use of such land would be to build vertical (high-rise) and also to have the possibility of expansion for the future development. A mixed use high rise development diversifies the use of space within a single building structure. Combination of living, entertainment, shopping and lodging in single urban structure, helps to utilize the full potential of an urban site. Sponsorship: Durbrow, John Show less

Show more20 Households participated in the process of creating this Cohousing proposal. Cohousing is a type of collaborative housing in which residents actively participate in the design and operation of their own neighborhoods. The interactions with the participants included conversations and questionnaires aimed at bringing forth desired qualities of a residence and a larger community. The design proposal of this project attempts to reflect the individualities and shared qualities of its future cohabitants. Show less
