Show moreExtensional rheology plays an immense role in many polymer processing operations, such as blow molding and fiber spinning. Extensional flow is a type of deformation that stretches a material and is sensitive to a polymer’s molecular structure. Elongational experiments are important in establishing flow models and verifying constitutive equations. Reliable extensional measurements and understanding of extensional rheology are vital for both academia and industry because they build upon the foundation for future theories, models, and applications. This study aims to understand the characteristics of a uniaxial elongation measuring technique and the validity of the data obtained. It focuses on the experimental properties of the Sentmanat Extensional Rheometer (SER), a specific uniaxial elongation rheometer, and tests the rheology for different molecular weights of polyisobutylene (PIB) melts. Through use of oscillatory shear, storage and loss modulus data are obtained and used to establish linear viscoelastic behavior. Using the SER, polyisobutylene was deformed to generate extensional viscosity data for different sample sizes, which was compared to the linear viscoelastic curve to check for consistency. Visual data analysis was used to examine deviations from ideal deformation. The results from this study were consistent with deviations seen by other researchers using the SER, and established experimental parameters that can improve performance of the SER. Based on elongational viscosity data, it is concluded that elongational viscosity does have a dependence based on sample size. In addition, this paper also quantifies the onset of surface instabilities, a phenomenon commonly seen, but not specifically reported. By utilizing the SER and different optical techniques, the development of the surface instability is examined. Analysis of the images demonstrates an appearance of surface striations that are consistent with different experimental parameters. By accurately capturing surface instabilities, they are found to be closely associated with sample deformations and onset of sample failure. By comparing visual and scattering images, the hencky strain (εinstability) at which instability occurs is consistently seen around 0.6 to 1.0. It is concluded that these striations are independent of strain rate, molecular weight, sample size, and technique. The validation of extensional viscosity’s dependence on sample size and onset of instability has great significance for uniaxial extension measuring tools, polymer processing, and extensional polymer modeling and simulation.

What role will architecture play in shaping our society and the way people live their lives? Can architecture really be a tool for other objectives? Can it be part of reactivation of the economy? The future of cities, whether they are as densely populated as the modern metropolis or more sprawled like its surroundings, need to adapt to new technologies and ways of living. We have to be aware that our cities are in constant change and development, and that their future relies on how able they are at adapting. In order to adapt, urbanism needs to step back and analyze the existing city structure, to improve it and create a more flexible environment that will adjust to the next century. The objective of this thesis is to propose a strategy that enhances sustainable development and meets the needs of today by opening a path to the future. Sustainable development is the kind of development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs.1 Change is occurring - society is willing to connect with the city and therefore the city must connect back. It should be the playground of young and not so young people. It is in our hands to transform the built environment and create spaces of relation in society. 1 Definition coined in the Brundtland Commission of 1972. xv However, what is really needed is to fix, re-activate, remodel and improve the existing metropolis that we already have. The objective of the thesis is to investigate the urban model of a city and how this can address the present but at the same time is flexible enough to shape the future. Opposites exist and, by definition, there is a strong connection between them. In this research I will work towards a hybrid condition of society. Why do we need to have the opposites separated? Can we bring them together, make them work and interact but at the same time maintain their identity? Can nature influence the metropolis without causing it to lose the density that characterizes it? To investigate this and find answers to the continuous evolution of society, the first studio will concentrate on the Retreat, what it is and how it works. This research will provide an abstraction of nature and Retreat in its pure simple form. I will use this abstraction by applying it to the built environment and using it to analyze and shape the metropolis. I will also observe what changes occur in the basic relationships of society. Many questions arise when an architect gets into the topic of the future city. What kind of people and cities do we want? What will make us experience the difference that we are searching for? How can public spaces be used for people to meet and connect and for culture to grow? What is the difference between metropolis and nature? These questions will guide the projects to find a coherent strategy that could be applied to different metropolitan sceneries. The first field of study proposed is designing with nature. The environment in Colorado around Camp of Arts Perry Mansfield is mostly wild. Here I will see how design xvi responds to the nature around it. How do we bring an urbanized sense to the landscape in order to enhance the feelings we have in it? The second field of study of the thesis addresses the urban tissue of Woodlawn (a neighborhood in Chicago), the existing metropolis, how it is moving towards the future, and creating a bond between environment and metropolis. In this section of the thesis, I will introduce nature as a tool for the development of the city. What are architects and urbanists working on to reshape the built environment, and how do we make spatial conditions where we will experience more diverse stages? I want to create a hybrid stage where natural and urban elements work together, a space for interaction in society, and having retreat and metropolis in the same place. The ´Desires of the City´ will be a strategy that looks into a series of aspects that involve the urban development. Focusing in what the users need and want, and creating a community sense between the neighbors. The aspect of controlling energy and sustainable projects that deal with communication and infrastructures of the neighborhood. In the programmatic side, providing a strategy of one space that hosts different activities, with a variety of cultural and social equipment. I will introduce a designed landscape that will work as the extra layer that we are missing in the urbanism of today. Landscape will be the infrastructure of the neighborhoods, introducing the concept of semi-private ownership in the metropolis. Questioning the actual ownership of the ground and transforming vacant land into options and opportunities, one of the fundamental assertions of the projects is the necessity of community action and engagement. In order to make an impact, society has to be involved xvii in the process. This new landscape infrastructure is where action happens and will spark the beginning of a new urbanism that is characterized by flexibility and where future changes in society are an asset and not an issue. This new residential model is sensible and will respond to the desires of the users.

Show moreInsect flight muscle (IFM) from Lethocerus indicus is an asynchronous muscle which can keep on oscillating after a neural stimulation, as long as the load is mechanically-resonant. It has high degree of structural order as well. These characteristics make it an ideal material to study the structure of IFM in vitro. In this research, the structure of IFM from Lethocerus indicus was studied using X-ray diffraction. Multiple isomorphous replacement (MIR) using heavy atoms to alter the structure of biological macromolecules was used in an attempt to solve the well-known phase problem of crystallography. MIR is less commonly used in non-crystalline systems. Here we showed that, by labeling with two heavy atoms, potassium tetrachloroaurate (III) (KAuCl4) and p-Chloromercuribenzoic acid (PCMB), the diffraction patterns from IFM samples changed, in particular the intensities of reflections on the meridian. The positions and intensities of every layer line on the meridian before and after labeling were compared, and the best conditions for the two heavy atoms to use for labeling were discussed. These results indicate that this approach may be a feasible way of determining the electron density in this material with further development.

Show moreThe relationship between enactment of Common Core State Standards – Mathematics (CCSSM), student misconceptions, student achievement and teacher variables was investigated. After providing professional development on CCSSM enactment, observations were conducted to determine the degree of enactment of CCSSM content and Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP) in 22 classrooms of nine teachers in an urban charter school network consisting of three high schools. Students were all boys, 98% African American, and predominantly of low socio-economic status. Data included quarterly assessments, Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) test scores, and a teacher survey. Results indicated experienced teachers with high efficacy who expected students to discuss their work were related to higher levels of CCSSM enactment in teacher actions, fewer misconceptions and higher test scores. Newer teachers were most concerned about availability of CCSSM materials and had higher levels of enactment of CCSSM in classroom materials. A strong belief in student ability was related to student enactment of SMP. Implications for teacher education, teacher practice, and future research are discussed.

Show moreSeasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a depressive disorder characterized by recurrent episodes most often beginning in the fall and remitting in spring and summer. Individuals with SAD experience both vegetative symptoms (e.g., fatigue, increased appetite and weight gain, and an increased need for sleep) and psychological symptoms (e.g., sadness, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness. In addition to the seasonal variations in vegetative and psychological functioning in SAD, daily weather also can potentially affect these phenomena. Symptoms such as mood, cognition, and energy can vary between and within days as a function of weather variables in a population experiencing seasonal symptoms. Using experience sampling method (ESM), which allows for less reliance on participant memory, we examined the impact of weather on day-to-day variability of mood and fatigue, and specifically in individuals with seasonal symptoms. To our knowledge, this is the first study to use ESM to examine the impact of weather on this symptomatology. Results failed to find evidence of a relationship between variability in daily weather and either daily mood or fatigue in this sample of seasonal individuals. This was the case for both same day weather and weather aggregated over the previous six days. Future studies would benefit from a longer data collection period in order to determine if there are long-term effects of weather variables on mood or fatigue. ESM would be useful in studying the effect of various time-varying variables on a variety of time-related aspects of SAD symptomatology.

Show moreTechnical communicators often employ user-centered design approaches to design textual artifacts that mediate workplace activity. The artifact’s designer is positioned as an expert who knows what is best for the artifact’s user (worker). I argue that those methods discount the role of the worker. I apply activity theory as the conceptual framework and genre tracing as the research method to analyze a corpus of documents that mediated the training evaluation activity at ABC Pharmaceutical (a pseudonym for the company’s name) to explain the evolution of those artifacts and theorize the reasons for their historical development. My findings show that their evolution – whether in the form of new genre selections, modifications, splicing, or even abandonment of genres – was influenced by worker efforts that challenged the official expert solutions. The implications of these findings to the fields of technical communication and business research are that even though design experts and business leaders may want to control the organizational strategies, work processes, and mediating artifacts/tools that accomplish those actions, workers will challenge official positions. There are dialectical forces at work that reflect official centripetal efforts that seek organizational stability from formal, normal, and regular structures versus centrifugal efforts that are disruptive and ad hoc in nature. The genre battles Idiscuss in this dissertation reflect a process that should be accepted as healthy and normal by both leadership and design experts, rather than feared or overly regulated.

Show moreIn this work, I present a non-binary Decode-and-Forward Network Coded (DFNC) protocol over GF(2q) for reliable communication in multi-user cooperative wireless networks. There are two time phases in DFNC protocol: each user transmits its own data in the first time phase and serves as a relay in the second time phase to transmit the network coded information combining its own and others. In particular, a non-binary coding matrix construction method is proposed so as to reduce the transmission overhead and to provide independence for decoding. Moreover, we design a creative joint decoding algorithm: Credit-based Updating Algorithm (CUA), which works on symbol-level coupling network-decoding and channel-decoding together. By fully exploiting the spatial diversity and redundancy residing in network coding, CUA improves the solvability of decoding set at the destination, and therefore achieves better performance than traditional decoding algorithms, such as Gaussian Elimination. From the analysis and simulation results, we demonstrate that the proposed protocol achieves higher diversity order and outperforms other traditional transmission schemes in terms of Symbol Error Rate (SER).

The broad range of future space exploration, new advances in technology and increasing demand for space travel and space tourism will create great opportunities for architects to use their special abilities and skills in the realm of space. The lunar habitat is defined as a multidisciplinary task and cannot be considered an independent project from the main module. Therefore, habitability will become the most important aspect of future human exploration. A successful design strategy should integrate architecture, structure and other disciplines and should bring in elements such as psychological and physiological factors, human interfaces, and privacy. The current research provides “Habitat Architectural Design System (HADS)” in order to evaluate lunar habitat concepts based on habitability, functional optimization, and human factors. HADS helps to promote parametric studied and evaluation of habitat concepts. It will provide a guideline dependent upon mission objectives to standardize architectural needs within the engineering applications and scientific demands. The significance of this research is the process of developing lunar habitat concepts using an architectural system to evaluate the quality of each concept via habitability aspects. This process can be employed during the early stage of design development and is flexible enough to be adjusted by different parameters according to the objectives of lunar mission, limitations, and cost. It also emphasizes the importance of architecture involvement in space projects, especially habitats.

Show moreThe rise of global energy consumption and the growing trend to utilize clean energy stress the demand to harvest the untapped green energy existing in every day life of human kind. Among the commonly over-looked energy resources, the kinetic motions including the vibration generated by linear motion and the vibration existent in ambient environment prove to own strong energy potentials. Though so far a number of such kinetic energy harvesters have already been studied, these existent energy harvesting devices can be improved on multiple aspects from power density, usage efficiency of expensive permanent magnetic material, to optimization of interface power electronics. This Ph.D. dissertation proposes an unconventional high power density linear electromagnetic kinetic energy harvester, and a high-performance two-stage interface power electronics to maintain maximum power abstraction from the energy source and charge the Li-ion battery load with constant current of low ripple at the same time. The proposed machine architecture is composed of a double-sided flat type silicon steel stator with winding slots, a permanent magnet mover, coil windings, a linear motion guide and an adjustable spring bearing. The unconventional design of the machine is that NdFeB magnet bars in the mover are placed with magnetic fields in horizontal direction instead of vertical direction and the same magnetic poles are facing each other. The derived magnetic equivalent circuit model proves the average air-gap flux density of the novel topology is as high as 0.73 T with 17.7% improvement over that of the conventional topology at the given geometric dimensions of the proof-of-concept machine. Subsequently, the improved output voltage and power are achieved. The dynamic model of the linear generator is also developed, and the analytical equations of output maximum xv power are derived for the case of driving vibration with amplitude that is equal, smaller and larger than the relative displacement between the mover and the stator of the machine respectively. Furthermore, the finite element analysis (FEA) model has been built and simulated to prove the derived analytical results and the improved power generation capability. Also, an optimization framework is explored to extend the dynamic system modeling method of the proposed single-Degree-of-Freedom (1-DOF) linear generator to the multi-Degree-of-Freedom (n-DOF) vibration based linear energy harvesting devices with multi proof masses and springs. Moreover, a boost-buck cascaded switch mode converter with current controller is designed to extract the maximum power from the harvester and charge the Li-ion battery with trickle current. Meanwhile, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm is proposed and optimized for low frequency driving vibrations. Finally, a proof-of-concept unconventional PM linear generator is prototyped and tested to verify the simulation results of the FEA model. For the coil windings of 33, 66 and 165 turns, the output power of the machine is tested to have the output power of 65.6 mW, 189.1 mW, and 497.7 mW respectively with the maximum power density of 2.486 mW/cm3.

Show moreResearch on body dissatisfaction in college athletes is largely mixed regarding its prevalence and occurrence. Most of the current literature indicates that athletes in lean-promoting sports, regardless of sex, experience greater body dissatisfaction than athletes in non-lean-promoting sports. Division I athletes as compared to Division III athletes report significantly more body dissatisfaction. This study sought to further investigate group differences between sport type, sex, and division level for the following constructs: body dissatisfaction, sport competitiveness, mindfulness, perfectionism, self-esteem, and sport confidence. A sample of 191 males and females completed self-report questionnaires. A series of six 2x2x2 factorial analyses of variance (ANOVA) were used to examine the data: sex (males vs. females), sport type (lean-promoting and non-lean-promoting), and division level (Division I vs. Division III). Results revealed a significant main effect for sex and body dissatisfaction, such that females reported high levels of body dissatisfaction regardless of division level and sport type. A significant interaction (sex vs. sport type) for body dissatisfaction was also found, indicating that males in lean-promoting sports reported greater body dissatisfaction than males in non-lean-promoting sports. Body dissatisfaction did not differ significantly by division level, but Division I as compared to Division III athletes reported significantly greater sport competitiveness, trait mindfulness, self-esteem, and sport confidence. As body dissatisfaction is related to disordered eating, future research should aim to examine the longitudinal trajectory of body dissatisfaction in college athletes and how it relates to the development of eating disorders.

Show moreCollagen is the main component of human connective tissue and extracellular matrix. Here we report multiple novel methods for utilizing optical tweezers to measure mechanical properties of different hierarchical levels of collagenous materials. First, we introduce a method for optical trap calibration that is suitable for viscoelastic material. The method is designed for use on experimental setups with two optical tweezers and is based on pulling a trapped particle with one trap while holding it with the other. The method combines advantages of commonly known PSD-fitting and fast-sweeping methods, allowing calibration of a completely fixed trap in a fluid of unknown viscosity/viscoelasticity without additional expensive equipment. Then we report an approach to measure the longitudinal component of the elastic moduli of biological fibers under conditions close to those found in vivo and apply it to type I collagen from rat tail tendon. This approach combines optical tweezers, atomic force microscopy, and exploits Euler-Bernoulli elasticity theory for data analysis. The approach also avoids the traditional drying-soaking cycle, since samples are freshly extracted. Importantly, strains are kept below 0.5%, which appear consistent with the linear elastic regime. We find, surprisingly, that the longitudinal elastic modulus of type I collagen cannot be represented by a single quantity but rather is a distribution that is broader than the uncertainty of our experimental technique. Lastly, we report a new method for characterizing anisotropic viscoelastic response of collagenous matrices. Anisotropic collagenous extracellular matrices are used in biomedicine to enhance the wound healing process by directing fibroblast proliferation. We utilize an optical trap to monitor the thermal fluctuations of microspheres embedded into collagenous network to extract a viscoelastic response function of the network along the principal axes of anisotropy.

Show moreWhile vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) have a simpler design than the horizontal-axis wind turbines, their development has been hindered due to their unsteady aerodynamics and complex flow field. In this thesis, a parameterized study is conducted to simulate a baseline VAWT using STAR-CCM+, a commercial finite volume code. A hybrid grid scheme, with structured prism layer mesh at the surface of the blades, is used to properly resolve the turbulent boundary layers on the blades. The flow was highly unsteady due to the rotating geometries. Thus, a sliding mesh technique is implemented at the interface of rotating and stationary zones. The dominant factors limiting the performance of the VAWTs are investigated for a range of moderate tip speed ratios, by visualizing the flow field and modeling the individual blade aerodynamics. The VAWT aerodynamics is shown to be dominated by the dynamic stall, at low tip speed ratios, and by the blade-wake interactions and the wake blockage effects, at high tip speed ratios. The concept of turbine coupling is used to improve the performance of the VAWTs by their internal aerodynamic interactions. Two counter-rotating turbines are placed in close proximity, and simulated over the same range of tip speed ratios as before, and for a set of different spacing between them. The effects of spacing and the tip speed ratio on their overall power output and their wake recovery characteristics are then investigated. A cluster of turbines with spacing equal to 1.50 turbine diameters and tip speed ratio of three is shown to have the quickest wake recovery and highest power enhancement, increasing the turbine average power coefficient by 22%.

Show moreVitreoscilla spp. is an aerobic, Gram-negative bacterium that produces a dimeric hemoglobin, designated as Vitreoscilla hemoglobin(VHb). The distal site of VHb has a unique structure, which has becomes quite a hot spot for study. The first crystallographic structure of wild type VHb indicated that Tyr29 might play an important role in the ligand-binding properties. In an earlier study of a Tyr29Ala mutant, the oxygen-binding properties were shown to be unaffected relative to the wild-type, possibly because the space occupied by the aromatic ring of Tyr 29 in the wild-type is occupied by the aliphatic ring of Pro 54. However, there is no crystal structure that can validate this hypothesis. This project aims to determine the structural changes of VHb when both Tyr29 and Pro54 are mutated to Ala, and the crystal structure of VHb when Tyr29 is mutated to Ala. We added a hexahistidine tag on the C terminus of both the mutants in order to simplify the process of protein purification. The protein was obtained by precipitation and then purified over a HisPur Spin Column. For further purification, the protein was purified by ion exchange and hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The circular dichroism spectrum data of both mutants showed that the basic structure of VHb remains similar, and the thermal denaturation ability is also similar to that of wild-type VHb.

Show moreIn today’s world the key challenges for wireless communication are the data rate and quality of service (QoS). Diversity schemes could lower the probability of outage thereby increasing the data rates and QoS. One method of diversity is deploying multiple antennas at the receiver and transmitter that create multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems which not only increase the data rate, but also provide higher reliability, robustness and QoS as compared to single antenna systems. This work provides a comprehensive analysis of the performance of the space-time block codes in fading environment. We also provide a new space-time coding scheme based on circulant matrices, Circulant Space-Time Codes, which is linear and orthogonal with rate one for any number of transmitters. We calculate the pairwise error probability (PEP) under block fading environment. Then we use this PEP expression to calculate the union bounds on performance of the CSTCs. Simulation results shows that by increasing the number of receivers wherein number of transmitters increase the probability of symbol error rate would decrease. Since this code is orthogonal the decoding complexity is low as compared to other block codes.

Show moreThe role of the architect as master-builder has been severely eroded, especially in the single-family housing industry. Although other professions have embraced the tremendous advances in technology, the architectural profession has regressed. Historically the architect has been an innovation pioneer. Early in the twentieth century architects had a broad, innovative role. Architects rethought the design process, construction methods, fabrication processes, structural, and engineering systems. Now in the twenty-first century, however, the majority of architects have little to no influence on the latter four; and the design process, the one aspect the architect still controls, has remained stagnant. This thesis examines the available technologies being championed by parallel industries, compares the advantages and disadvantages of innovation implementation in the design field, and proposes a solution for the architect to regain control as master-builder of single-family homes through new media concepts. With an architectural implementation of a web-based, collaborative design and construction alliance, consumers have access to choice, quality, and information when purchasing a new home. It is proposed that affordable architect-designed housing choices be delivered through architectural design systems. These systems allow controlled customization of architectural designs, all while delivering real time cost data and building simulation. The result of this study is an open design system led by the architect that allows homebuyers access to affordable quality design, transparency in costs, and an alternative choice in purchasing a new home.
