Show moreWater shortages will be a global problem by the year 2025. With the Great Lakes Basin accounting for 95% of the fresh water in the United States it will soon become our most valuable natural resource. In re-defining urban relationships to the Great Lakes a healthy, ecologically stable, and regenerative water system can become our greatest national asset. Providing a prototype solution for one of these urban areas (Traverse City, MI) may set a precedent for long term protection of the Great Lakes. Show less

Show moreMadison, WI is dominated by two main forces; the state government and the University of Wisconsin. These two institutions are linked by State Street, a pedestrian and bike corridor that serves as the main public gathering space for the city. The new Central Public Library along this strip will provide a free, democratic space for all Madison citizens. Beyond collecting books and storing media, the Madison Library offers opportunities for gatherings and informational exchanges 24 hours a day. Show less

Show moreThe aim of this project is to develop a cluster of hybrid houses in Evanston designed to produce energy and reduce resources consumption in comparison to the houses surrounding it. The project goals are to demonstrate performance improvement. Maximize sun exposure and the interaction between the houses and its gardens. To raise awareness that it is possible to live in a more environmentally friendly unit without hardship is another purpose of the project. Sponsorship: Denison, Dirk Show less

Show moreThe purpose of this thesis is to develop an effective design approach necessary in building a new city. The challenge is to assemble a background observations and research that will provide an understanding of the concepts required for developing new sustainable cities. It is hopeful that the ideas and design process can also be a framework to be applied on other undeveloped land that has the potential for new cities particularly in Malaysia. The main idea is to develop a thorough understanding of how the built environment plays an important role in shaping a community as well as identifying the technology involved. It specifically addresses the central issues involved with the art of place making, which determines the success of any particular urbanity. Environment then becomes the most important factor responsible for the physical, mental, and psychological development of an urban society. M.S. in Architecture, December 2011 Show less

Show moreManhattan’s expansion is limited by its context; for decades its growth has been upward and inward. It fills the remaining gaps and leftover spaces in its own fabric. As time presses on, this layered context grows in density, accumulating a thickness around the alley, the fire escape, and the rooftop. By resisting the city’s tendency to stifle, one can gather these moments of Manhattan’s past, and channel the interplay of space and narrative. Show less
