Show moreThe goal of IPRO 320 is to create an online professional network for school teachers at the kindergarten through twelfth grade level to allow for the sharing of ideas, lesson plans and other professionally relevant information. This is a continuing project which saw limited success in the previous semester in that a functioning web site was constructed based on surveys of public school teachers but it saw very little use. This semester, the planned approach is to build on the research generated last semester by performing additional market research with teachers. Following that, IPRO 320 will rework much of the previous web site by refining some of the features, adding additional ones as the research indicates and improving the website in general, both functionally and aesthetically.

Show moreIn the disclosed embodiments the video signal is recorded on successive longitudinal tracks with high frequency bias. The sound may be recorded transversely on adjacent tracks or may be recorded with the video as pulse modulation in the horizontal blanking intervals. The video bias frequency is selected so as to avoid beat notes with the video signal. The horizontal and vertical sync signals may be amplified separate from the composite video and then added thereto so as to record sync signals of increased amplitude. The picture signal from a television receiver may be recorded without further amplification.

Show moreBiodesulfurization (BDS) of petroleum has been investigated as an alternative method to conventional chemical desulfurization for many years. Despite its potential to be an environmentally benign method, it has not been developed sufficiently to be useful in real world applications. This is due to its low efficiency and the necessity for it to work at temperatures high enough to lower the viscosity of petroleum so that mixing can be achieved. This study places the spotlight on two strains of Paenibacillus isolated in our laboratory that, together, possess biodesulfurization ability at moderately high temperatures and attempts to enhance biodesulfurization by expression of Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb) in the Paenibacillus strains. The effects of expression of the VHb gene (vgb) on growth and desulfurizing activity was examined in a symbiotic system between the Paenibacillus strains 32O-Y and 32O-W. Of the two, 32O-Y is the one with the ability to metabolize dibenzothiophene (DBT), a common compound in petroleum that contains organic sulfur, while 32O-W enhances this ability, forming a symbiotic relationship between the two. The transformant of 32O-Y bearing vgb cloned into the shuttle vector pNW33N had been previously constructed in our laboratory. Presence of pNW33N-vgb was verified in one strain of 32O-Y through isolation of DNA, PCR, and gel electrophoresis. Mixtures of 32O-Y/32O-W or 32O-Y[pNW33N-vgb]/32O-W were cultured in minimal medium (CDM) with DBT as the sole sulfur source and subjected to multiple trials of growth and assay of DBT metabolism at varying temperatures. At 45 ˚C there was a substantial increase in both growth and DBT metabolizing coincident with VHb expression, whereas at lower (37 ˚C) and higher (50 ˚C) temperatures, VHb expression had little to no effect on either parameter. For both growth and DBT metabolism tested at 37 ˚C, 45 ˚C and 50 ˚C the highest absolute levels were seen at 37 ˚C, and the lowest at 45 ˚C.

Show moreThe Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has opened a new era in experimental nuclear physics. Among the most important discoveries of this new era are the jet quenching phenomenon, the energy loss suffered by a hard scattered parton traversing the medium, and the collective flow, approaching the limit of ideal hydrodynamics. RHIC experiments have introduced a number of novel correlation methods for studies of jets and jet-medium interactions in the high multiplicity environment of ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. The di- and multi-hadron correlation techniques have since been quintessential to the understanding of the properties of the created medium in many complementary ways. In this work selected recent results are presented for the RHIC’s top energy collisions at 200 GeV. Di-hadron correlation measurements from Au–Au collisions, illuminating the properties of the hot nuclear medium, are confronted with the recent findings from d–Au data at the same energy. Understanding of initial state properties and collision evolution is tested by unexpected similarities in the di-hadron correlation measurements between the two systems.

Show moreWe study hypothesis testing problem for the drift/viscosity coefficient for stochastic fractional heat equation driven by additive space-time white noise colored in space. Since it is the first attempt to deal with hypothesis testing in SPDEs, we assume that the first N Fourier modes of the solution are observed continuously over time interval [0, T], similar methodology could be developed later for discrete sampling. The highlight of this article lies in the notion of “asymptotically the most powerful test” we introduce, which is a brand new idea for hypothesis testing not only in stochastic PDEs but in general stochastic processes. This conception provides a definite criterion how we compare the convergence rates of errors of two tests and how we maximize this convergence rate in a given rejection class when T or N is near infinity. And also we will give some equally important results for controlling the errors with finite T and N. We will build up asymptotic rejection class and find explicit forms of “the most powerful test” in two asymptotic regimes: large time asymptotics T →∞, and increasing number of Fourier modes N → ∞. The proposed statistics are derived based on Maximum Likelihood Ratio. We first consider a simple hypothesis testing, for which we exploit the key technic, by which we continue considering for more general issues. Over the course of proving the main results, we obtain a series of technical results on the asymptotic behaviors of the probabilities related to likelihood ratio, which are also, in some sense, of high value for study in probability theory. In particular, we find the cumulant generating function of the log-likelihood ratio, we obtain some sharp large deviation type results for both T → ∞ and N → ∞, and develop some useful strategies in probability convergence for studying asymptotic properties of the power of the likelihood ratio type tests.

Show moreDepressive symptoms are highly prevalent among people with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and yet there is a lack of consensus over psychometrically sound diagnostic criteria or screening tools for depression. This is particularly true with the SCI population in China. Currently, there is limited information regarding the prevalence of depression, severity, and depressive symptomatology among individuals with SCI in China. CES-D lOis a simple and quick tool to use, and it avoids over-estimating depression due to frequent somatic complaints associated with SCI. To our best knowledge, the CES-D 10 had not been used among the native Chinese population with SCI. The current study used the CES-D 10 to measure depressive symptoms among individuals with SCI in China. The purpose ofthis study was to examine factorial validity, internal consistency, construct validity, and concurrent validity ofCES-D 10 among 260 Chinese individuals with SCI. Results showed an alarmingly high prevalence of depressive symptoms among the sample. Consistent with existing literature and hypotheses, a two-factor structure of CES-D 10 was replicated based on a confirmatory factor analysis. Hierarchical regression analyses showed several important psychosocial constructs such as acceptance of disability, social support, and functional disability were predictors of overall depressive symptoms. Surprisingly, depressive symptoms were not predictive of employment status. The scale showed low internal consistency, and a cultural response bias in which participants are less likely to endorse positively-stated CES-D items among the current sample. Such finding is consistent with past studies among the East Asian population. Limitations and implications ofthe study were discussed.

Show moreWe study the network capacity of large scale wireless sensor networks under both Gaussian Channel model and Protocol Interference Model. To study network capacity under gaussian channel model, we assume n wireless nodes {v1, v2, · · · , vn} are randomly or arbitrarily distributed in a square region Ba with side-length a. We randomly choose ns multicast sessions. For each source node vi, we randomly select k points pi,j (1 ≤ j ≤ k) in Ba and the node which is closest to pi,j will serve as a destination node of vi. The per-flow unicast(multicast) capacity is defined as the minimum data rate of all unicast(multicast) sessions in this network. We derive the achievable upper bounds on unicast capacity and a upper bound(partial achievable) on multicast capacity of the wireless networks under and Gaussian Channel model. We found that the unicast(multicast) capacity for wireless networks under both two models has three regimes. Under protocol interference model, we assume that n wireless nodes are randomly deployed in a square region with side-length a and all nodes have the uniform transmission range r and uniform interference range R > r. We further assume that each wireless node can transmit/receive at W bits/second over a common wireless channel. For each node vi, we randomly pick k − 1 nodes from the other n − 1 nodes as the receivers of the multicast session rooted at node vi. The aggregated multicast capacity is defined as the total data rate of all multicast sessions in the network. In this work we derive matching asymptotic upper bounds and lower bounds on multicast capacity of large scale random wireless networks under protocol interference model.

Show morePersonality-type measures should be viable tools to use for selection. They have incremental validity over cognitive measures and they add this incremental validity while decreasing adverse impact (Hough, 1998; Ones, Viswesvaran & Schmidt, 1993; Ones & Viswesvaran, 1998a). However, personality measures are susceptible to faking; individual’s instructed to fake on personality measures are able to increase their scores (Barrick & Mount, 1996; Ellingson, Sackett & Hough, 1999; Hough, Eaton, Dunnette, Kamp, & McCloy, 1990). Further, personality measures often reveal less than optimal validity estimates as research continually finds meta-analytic coefficients near .2 (e.g., Morgeson, Campion, Dipboye, Hollenbeck, Murphy, & Schmitt, 2007). Some researchers have suggested that these two problems are linked as faking on personality measure may reduce their ability to predict job performance (e.g., Tett & Christansen, 2007). Empirically keyed instruments traditionally enhance prediction and have been found to mitigate the effects of faking (Kluger, Reilly & Russell, 1991; Scott & Sinar, 2011). Recently suggested as a means to key to personality measures (e.g., Tawney & Mead, In Prep), this dissertation further investigates empirical keying methods as a means to both mitigate faking effects and as a means to increase validity of personality-type measures. A Monte Carlo methodology is used due to the difficulties in obtaining accurate measures of faking. As such, this dissertation investigates faking issues under controlled and known parameters, allowing for more robust conclusions as compared to prior faking research.

Show moreAn apparatus and method for precise angular positioning of an object. A first pivot arm and a second pivot arm each is pivotally mounted with respect to a base. A pivot base flex member is operatively connected to the first pivot arm and allows the first pivot arm to pivot with respect to the base, within a particular plane. A second pivot base flex member is operatively connected to the second pivot arm and allows the second pivot arm to pivot with respect to the base, and also within either the same plane or a different plane as the plane within which the first pivot arm pivots. Support structures maintain each of the first pivot arm and the second pivot arm within the particular plane or planes. An interconnect flex member connects the first pivot arm and the second pivot arm. With a relatively small base and thus overall apparatus, an input movement, such as a linear input of about 10 mm can be translated into an output movement of about 7200 radians.
