- Engineering Ethics in China
- This article describes China’s century-long concern with the professional ethics of engineers, especially a succession of codes of engineering ethics going back at least to 1933. This description is the result both of our own archival research and of “philosophical history”, the application of concepts from the philosophy of professions to the facts historians (or we) have discovered. Engineers, historians, social scientists, and philosophers of technology, as well as students of professional ethics, should find this description interesting. It certainly provides a reason to wonder whether those who write about codes of professional ethics as if they were an Anglo-American export unlikely to put down roots elsewhere might have overlooked many early codes outside English-speaking countries. While code writers in China plainly learned from Western codes, the Chinese codes were not mere copies of their Western counterparts. Indeed, the Chinese codes sometimes differed inventively from Western codes in form (for example, being wholly positive) or content (for example, protecting local culture).

- Integrating Ethics Into a Research Experience for Undergraduates
- Abstract A Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) is an extra-curricular opportunity for science or engineering students in the sophomore, junior, or senior year to participate in academic research in much the way graduate students do. It is a way to introduce undergraduates to the excitement of real research. Because it also seems an easy and attractive way to integrate ethics into undergraduate education, working out how professors of engineering or science might actually incorporate professional ethics into an REU seems desirable. This paper describes one effort to do that with engineering students.

- Machine Learning at the Bureau of Labor Statistics
- Vinesh Kannan (CS '19) shares his experiences working as a data science fellow at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Vinesh worked on the team that produces occupation and wage data used by policymakers, hiring staff, job seekers, and researchers across the country. He helped improve machine learning systems at the BLS: automatically identifying problematic training data and classifying rare jobs. - Examining Partnership-Health Associations Among Lesbian Women and Gay Men Using Population-Level Data
- Abstract Purpose: The aim was to provide the first broad assessment of partnership-health associations across partnership statuses among sexual minority individuals. Methods: Using population-level data from the 2016 U.S. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, specifically the 26 states/territories that assessed sexual orientation and gender identity, we ran analyses of covariance and logistic regressions to compare lesbian and gay individuals (N = 2963) of different partnership statuses in general health, physical health and health conditions, mental health, health behaviors, and healthcare access/utilization domains. Results: All omnibus and logistic regression models were significant (p < 0.001). Follow-up pairwise comparisons of mean differences across partnership groups revealed that in at least one variable in the general health, mental health, health behaviors, and healthcare access/utilization domains, married lesbian and gay individuals reported the best health, followed by partnered, single, and then divorced, separated, and widowed lesbian and gay individuals (p < 0.001). Exceptions included variables in the physical health and health conditions domain, the health behaviors of smoking and heavy drinking, and ever having an HIV test. When stratifying by sex, for both gay men and lesbian women being married or partnered related to the best health in at least one variable in each health domain, and in the majority of all outcome variables. Conclusion: This article provides the first evidence for partnership-health associations among gay and lesbian individuals based on a large-scale, multi-domain test of population-level data. Future research could examine temporal links between same-sex marriage legislation and health outcomes among sexual minority individuals.

- Professionalism Among Chinese Engineers: An Empirical Study
- This is a copy of a dataset - in English and Chinese - completed in 2018 looking at concepts of professionalism. Following on the Davis, Zhang survey of 2016, this study continues to evaluate the claim that China has a profession of engineering (as defined by Davis) with a larger, better educated, demographically different pool of two hundred and twenty-nine Chinese engineers, using more specific and deeper questions about “profession”, for example, by adding the investigation of competence (the discipline of engineering)—the perceived knowledge, skill, and judgment of the interviewees as evidence of one aspect of profession. The dataset includes a copy of the questionnaire in Chinese and English, as well as both the entire dataset of surveyed individuals as well as the data from individuals who were deemed to have enough experience in engineering to be included in the final data set analyzed.
