Descriptors and measurements of verbal violence in tweets: toxicity README
Sponsorship: National Science Foundation Award # 1525662, The purpose of this data collection was to test a scale for detecting verbal violence in Tweets. Workers at Mechanical Turk were first asked to complete a qualification test and then invited to code additional Tweets according to our scale. The qualification test involved a detailed explanation of each item of the scale, a walkthrough of a tweet that we had coded according to all 14 scale-items, a practice exercise, and a test. In the practice exercise, potential coders attempted to code a tweet on their own using our scale. After submitting their ratings, they were shown our own ratings for the same tweet and explanations for each of our ratings. The test component consisted of another coding task, in which coders were asked to code another tweet that we had already coded ourselves. The workers who, on test, with our ratings of that tweet on at least 11 out of the 14 items “passed” the test, earning the qualification that allowed them to participate in future coding tasks. Variables in the data include the ID of the Tweet (so that you may find it on Twitter; Twitter Terms of Service prohibit us from sharing the Tweets), the ID number we assigned to the coder, the rating that coder provided for each of the 14 items on our scale, the gender and age of the coder, and any comments the coder provided. Using Peer Navigators to Address the Integrated Healthcare Needs of African Americans with Serious Mental Illness
Objective Impact of a peer navigator program (PNP) develop by a community based participatory research team was examined on African Americans with serious mental illness who were homeless. Methods Research participants were randomized to PNP or a treatment-as-usual control group for one year. Data on physical and mental health, recovery, and quality of life were collected at baseline, 4, 8 and 12 months. Results Findings from group by trial ANOVAs of omnibus measures of the four constructs showed significant impact over the one year for participants in PNP compared to control described by small to moderate effect sizes. These differences emerged even though both groups showed significant improvements in reduced homelessness and insurance coverage. Conclusions Implications for improving in-the-field health care for this population are discussed. Whether these results occurred because navigators were peers per se needs to be examined in future research.
Three agendas for changing the public stigma of mental illness.
OBJECTIVE: Antistigma programs may be guided by 3 differing agendas: services (promote treatment engagement), rights (help people achieve rightful goals), and self-worth (facilitate self-worth and efficacy). This study examined the construct validity of this perspective by examining the factor structure of importance ratings of the 3 agendas. The study examined how importance might be viewed differently by the population as a whole versus a subsample of people who reported previous experience with mental health services and hence could be directly harmed by stigma. METHODS: 373 individuals recruited using Mechanical Turk completed importance ratings for each of the 3 agendas. Measures of public stigma were completed to examine concurrent validity of importance ratings. Those who reported taking medications for a psychiatric disorder were divided into a separate group and completed a measure of self-stigma. RESULTS: Outcomes seemed to confirm the factor structure of the 3 agendas model thereby offering partial support for the framework. Group analyses showed the services agenda was viewed as more important than rights or self-worth. People with mental health experience viewed the services agenda as more important than the other 2. However, dividing the mental health group into low and high self-stigma revealed that those with low self-stigma rated the rights agenda as more important. Conclusions and Implication for Practice: Participants with lower self-stigma identify the harm brought by stigma and thus endorse rights and self-worth more than those with higher self-stigma. Implications of these findings are discussed to assist to prioritize agendas for public health campaigns.

This is a continuing project on a functional website that was constructed based on surveys of public school teachers. This semester, the planned approach is to build on the progress made by last semester’s IPRO by furthering research and continuing development. The IPRO program at IIT, since its inception in 1995, has become a signature program of the school for it not only benefits participating students but also the corresponding sponsors and prospective employers of IIT graduates. During a student’s participation of an IPRO, he/she is engaged in a multi-discipline, teambased learning environment to solve a real-world problem proposed by industry sponsors and/or IIT faculty. Additionally, the program is designed to allow students to develop and apply their teamwork, project management, communication, and ethical behavioral skills.
