- Screech Tones of Supersonic Jets from Bevelled Rectangular Nozzles
- It is known experimentally that an imperfectly expanded rectangular jet from a thin-lip convergent nozzle emits only a single dominant screech tone. The frequency of the screech tone decreases continuously with an increase in jet Mach number. However, for a supersonic jet issued from a bevelled nozzle or a convergent-divergent nozzle with straight side walls, the shock cell structure and the screech frequency pattern are fairly complicated and have not been predicted before. It is shown that the shock cell structures of these jets can be decomposed into waveguide modes of the jet flow. The screech frequencies are related to the higher-order waveguide modes following the weakest link screech tone theory. The measured screech frequencies are found to compare web with the predicted screech frequency curves.

- Relationships Among Twitter Conversation Networks, Language Use, and Congressional Voting
- As Twitter becomes a more common means for officials to communicate with their constituents, it becomes more important that we understand just how that communication relates to other political activities. Using data from 411 members of Congress' Twitter activity during the summer of 2011, we examine relationships among the resulting conversation networks, language use, and political behavior. The social networks that result from their communications have surprisingly low density and high diameter, indicating a level of independence that is surprising for a group so tightly connected offline. Our findings also indicate that officials frequently use Twitter to advertise their political positions and to provide information but rarely to request political action from their constituents or to recognize the good work of others. Our analysis suggests strong relationships between anti-social behaviors indicated by the loosely connected network and low incidence of pro-social conversations and polarized or extreme Congressional voting records.

- Gerry-meandering: An Assessment of the Congressional District Model of Depository Allocation (preprint): AhrensGriffinedrev2
- The preprint of a published article dealing with the effect of allocating Federal Depositories by Congressional district. Conclusions drawn include the fact that due to redistricting that occurs after each decennial census, over time some districts may have within their boundaries a greater number than the two depositories that Congressional district allocation was intended to produce. Likewise, over time shifting boundaries of districts have created districts that have no depositories whatsoever.

- Apparatus for Generating Generally Uniform Compression in High-Viscosity Fluids
- An apparatus for generating generally uniform compression forces over a film of a relatively low-viscosity liquid by passing the low-viscosity liquid through a porous plate, from an upstream face to a downstream face of the porous plate. The porous plate has a specified porosity and arrangement of the through holes or other pores that results in forming a uniform pressure through and uniform compression forces over a film of the low-viscosity liquid that is at or near the upstream face of the porous plate. The apparatus of this invention results in homogeneous deformation of a material, such as molten polymer, polymer solution, multiphase polymer systems, asphalts or foods., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent

- Treehouse (Spring 2001) IPRO 328
- This is a collaborative project mentored by faculty from the Institute of Design and the College of Architecture. The team will investigate the emerging fusion of environments, information, and technology. Specifically, we will research how environments can be used to tell stories, and then apply our insights to envision new spaces that dramatically improve how people understand and use information. The first eight weeks of the class will be spent experiencing and learning about the best practices for using environments to tell stories. Each week will include a guest lecture from an expert in the topic and a related visit or assignment. Students will then unpack these experiences in order to understand the structures and strategies of each experience. By the end of our field trips, the class should have a deep understanding of the elements required to tell a good story with space, and knowledge of the state of the art in this arena. The second part of the class will involve applying our knowledge to envision an environment that integrates architecture and information to solve the needs of a particular user group or set of activities. Student teams will define the problem they wish to solve; however, we have the opportunity to use some databases being created at ID as content for the room. We do not intend to spend much time in the classroom for this IPRO. Much of our time will be spent in the field. Also, we will provide cursory instruction on methods that apply to each phase of our work together. These include interview techniques, field observation, cross-functional teamwork, prototyping, and innovation planning., Sponsorship: Don Hollis, Project Plan for IPRO 328: Treehouse for the Spring 2001 semester

- Apparatus and Method for In Situ Controlled Heat Processing of Hydrocarbonaceous Formations with a Controlled Parameter Line
- A system and method provide for preferential in situ heating of earth formations. A plurality of elongated conductive electrodes are emplaced in earth formations in respective spaced rows bounding a particular volume of the earth formations and forming a transmission line, preferably a triplate line, extending in the direction of the electrodes with the particular volume of the earth formations providing a dielectric medium between respective rows of electrodes. Electromagnetic energy is supplied to the transmission line at a frequency at which the spacing between respective rows is less than about twice the skin depth at the frequency of the applied energy. Reactance means are disposed along respective electrodes to provide predetermined effective transmission line characteristics to develop a predetermined heating pattern in the earth formations. The reactance means may be reactances disposed discretely between sections of respective electrodes. The reactance means may also be disposed between respective electrodes and the earth formation, as by a dielectric coating. A heating pattern may be developed to heat hydrocarbon rich deposits preferentially., Sponsorship: IIT Research Institute, United States Patent
