We have quite a few objectives for this IPRO. Our first objective is to research into both industrial and mass market applications of the Product Animations technology. After this first objective, we take 2 paths. The first leads to determining a screening criterion to select the best industrial prospects. We then plan to quantify the value propositions for the prospects selected from objective 2. When this is finished, we will create a deliverable simulation example, and finally write down any and all recommendations for future work with this IPRO. The other path leads to researching the idea or design of an ASP website. The problem posed with blind and visually impaired (BVI) swimmers is one of safety and independence. BVI individuals need to be able to orientate themselves in a swimming pool and avoid obstructions like lane-lines, pool walls and other swimmers for a safe experience. Additionally, it is important to BVI swimmers to maintain their independence and maintain a low profile during this experience. The Buoy team will focus on the design, testing and implementation of assistive technology focused on a pool environment with continuous input and feedback from the BVI community. A current passive device created in previous IPROs will be field-tested in a BVI pool for the semester in order to identify failure-modes of the device and collect real-world BVI user feedback to discover areas for improvement. Additionally, two groups have been organized to assess the use of invisible-fence and ultrasound technology in the creation of new assistive technology. Surveys and interviews will be conducted with the BVI community on a continuous basis to ensure the Buoy team is meeting the needs of the market., Deliverables

The purpose of the Inflatable Greenhouse IPRO was to design an air supported structure that was cheaper than the current greenhouse solution. The structural support of current greenhouses creates shadows that prevent an even sunlight exposure for the plants. The other issues we investigated were the cost, size, thermal control, and pest control of current greenhouse designs. The majority of the cost for a traditional greenhouse goes towards the structural support therefore an air supported structure should be significantly cheaper. The basic greenhouse design is oriented towards human occupants and is subsequently quite large. If the greenhouse was instead designed to house the plants already in the ground, just for the months that they needed shelter to grow, the cut back in size would also greatly affect the cost. We also looked into the thermal qualities of greenhouses. The very nature of a greenhouse absorbs and traps the light and heat of the sun. Without a cooling system a greenhouse can overheat and harm the plants within it. The other problem we found with current greenhouses was the pest control solution. Most greenhouses use strong chemicals that require special training for use and safety. Even the “organic” solutions use natural chemicals in concentrations considered toxic. Informal observations of a practical and creative approach piloting Blended Library Instruction for undergraduate Civil Architecture and Engineering students, in collaboration with faculty. At Illinois Institute of Technology students don’t receive library instruction as a required class or in tandem with a composition class. Faculty will schedule one-time sessions, which ideally should be planned with a class assignment in mind, but students are rarely engaged with a one time instruction. Many have IKIA syndrome or I Know It Already syndrome. The Millennials are a group that has integrated technology into every aspect of their lives and they assume that retrieving useful or necessary information will be easy. When they discover this isn’t the case lack of time, heightened anxiety, and increased frustration can prevent them from doing their best work. By intentionally creating a similar crisis prior to library instruction, students were more interested in what they stood to gain during pending library instruction. In this presentation we will discuss: 1) A creative means of delivering library instruction to a traditionally challenging population: engineering undergraduate students 2) Qualitative information collected via multiple assignments and interpreted in a quantitative fashion, as well as our observations. 3) A method for preparing students for library instruction that can be applied in almost any discipline without asking the instructor to sacrifice class time.

Measurement of hadron production in Deep Inelastic Scattering
Measurements of charged particle densities and K⁰s and Λ production in deep inelastic scattering at HERA are presented and compared to Monte Carlo event generator predictions. Apparatus and Method for In Situ Controlled Heat Processing of Hydrocarbonaceous Formations
A system and method for the controlled in situ heat processing of hydrocarbonaceous earth formations involves the application of electromagnetic energy at a selected frequency or at selected frequencies to a waveguide structure formed by electrodes bounding a particular volume of hydrocarbonaceous material. Terminating one end of the structure with different impedances at different times produces electric field standing waves of different respective phase at that end at a selected frequency. Two standing waves substantially 90.degree. out of phase in formations having relatively uniform dielectric properties result in substantially uniform application of heating power if the product of the amplitude-squared of the electric field standing wave and dwell time is substantially the same in each of the two modes. Feeding the line at both ends provides partial offset for attenuation. Various desired controlled heating patterns other than uniform may be effected by utilizing different dwell times or applied fields. Different frequencies provide further flexibility, particularly where the line is terminated differently at the respective frequencies. Innovative Actuators for Active Flow and Noise Control
Active flow control (AFC) has the potential to improve the efficiency of systems that involve both internal and external fluid flow. The primary driver in AFC is the expectation that the control will result in significant performance benefits at the system level with all trade-offs factored in. Successful application to aircraft systems can produce lighter, stealthier, agile aircraft with increased range, payload and a muffled acoustic signature. The design of an AFC system requires knowledge of flow phenomena and the selection of appropriate actuators, sensors and a control algorithm. The present overview focuses on actuators. Examples of flow and noise control presented here are restricted to open-loop systems. Various aspects of actuator utilization include actuator output characterization, exploiting resonances (plenum, structural or aeroacoustic) to enhance actuator amplitude and the different modes of actuation. A brief description of a high-bandwidth actuator is also provided, followed by a variety of application examples including edgetone suppression, cavity noise suppression, impingement noise suppression and jet mixing enhancement. The review concludes with a description of the successful application of AFC to the exhaust plume from an aircraft engine (JT8D).

The Fall 2008 semester of IPRO 303 will investigate and analyze the economic and technical details of the wind-turbine electricity generation industry. The IPRO 303 team will be focusing on the impact of equipment failures that lead to downtime and maintenance associated with the failures. A comparison of current industry practices in dealing with these problems, along with a detailed economic analysis of the true costs involved, will be the major goal. STABILITY OF TUBULAR AND AUTOTHERMAL PACKED-BED REACTORS USING PHASE PLANE ANALYSIS
The regions of stability and parametric sensitivity of countercurrent reactor/heat exchangers are determined explicitly in the plane of inlet feed temperature-inlet coolant temperature. The concept of phase plane analysis is generalized to include all orders of reaction rate expressions, a broader range of system parameters, and is extended to the case of autothermal reactors. An industrial hydrocarbon oxidation reactor model and an autothermal CO oxidation reactor model have been used to illustrate and to evaluate the analysis method. The approach presented here is appealing since the region of safe inlet temperatures is determined explicitly and the region of safe operation can be optimized with respect to the reactor design parameters., Endnote format citation
