Planning for Human Implantat ion of a Cor t ical Visual Prothesis (Semester Unknown) IPRO 306
Planning for Human Implantat ion of a Cor t ical Visual Prothesis (Semester Unknown) IPRO 306
Over the years there has been intensive research on visual prosthesis around the world and significant technological advancements have been made. The Intracortical Visual Prosthesis Team (IVP) at IIT has been researching and developing a procedure as well as a device which will be implanted within the human visual cortex. The device consists of sub-miniature electrodes which will artificially stimulate the visual cortex by introducing electrical currents in to the cortex. The IIT Team has reached a point in their 10 year development process where they would like to proceed with implanting the device in a volunteer in the next few years. Implantation of a device which provides artificial vision is an extraordinarily complex process. In the initial stages the medical and engineering aspects are the most prevalent ones, but as the project moves forward there are some questions that inevitably must be answered or at least considered. These questions deal much less with the technology and much more with the volunteers that will eventually have these complex devices implanted. To try and answer some of these questions, in IPRO 306 we will look into various medical, political, engineering, ethical, media and psychological issues that we believe may become of greater importance as the project progresses into the implementation stage. We will also look into the public relations aspect as well as some political and psychological issues. Based on our research and understanding we will provide several issues that we see as needing to be addressed in the future and recommend possible solutions to them., Deliverables

User Created Map Content (Spring 2011) IPRO 305
NAVTEQ is the corporate sponsor for IPRO 305. NAVTEQ is one of the world’s largest digital mapping companies. With competitors, such as Google, NAVTEQ aims to outdo the competition by providing their clients with robust quality mapping data. NAVTEQ achieves this by employing over 1,000 geographic analysts who’s sole job is to ensure that the data on their maps is unique and, above all, accurate from each of NAVTEQ’s 80,000+ sources[citation 1]. On their quest to provide their clients with robust data, NAVTEQ has identified the need for user- generated content. This is data that a user of a GPS mapping system can enter in for themselves. With this recognition of usergenerated mapping data, NAVTEQ pursues the need to be the world’s most robust digital mapping data provider., Sponsorship: NAVTEQ, Deliverables

Swimming Aid for Visually Impaired Swimmers (Semester Unknown) IPRO 310
The primary focus of this project is to help blind and visually impaired individuals to swim independently. The team will be divided into two sub-teams. One sub-team will create a passive device, which uses a mechanical device to provide tactile feedback to the swimmer. The other sub-team will create an active device which uses special electronic devices such as a sonar based device to help guide the swimmer. These devices will be repeatedly tested and updated to help increase the independence of blind and visually impaired individuals exercise and further improve their quality of life., Deliverables
Doing What I Say: Connecting Congressional Social Media Behavior and Congressional Voting
Public officials’ communication has been explored at length in terms of how such their statements are conveyed in the traditional media, but minimal research has been done to examine their communication via social media. This paper explores the kinds of statements U.S. officials are making on Twitter in terms of the actions they are trying to achieve. We then analyze the correlation between these statements, Congressional communication network structures, and voting behavior. Our analysis leverages over 29,000 tweets by members of Congress in conjunction with existing DW-NOMINATE voting behavior data. We find that pro-social and self-promoting statements correlate with Congressional voting records but that position within the Congressional communication network does not correlate with voting behavior., Sponsorship: Social Networks Research Group at IIT, IIT Graduate College
Analysis of Water Recovery from Power Plants for Recycling (Semester Unknown) IPRO 302
Analysis of Water Recovery from Power Plants for Recycling (Semester Unknown) IPRO 302
Potential power plant sites can become more difficult to determine if water is not available in great quantity. This is true in western states where it may be scarce and competed for by other industries as well as households. The aim of this project is to find an economical, as well as environmentally friendly way to recover water from the flue gas, which is produced when powder-river-basin (PRB) coal is burned in a 750 MW power plant., Sponsorship: Sargent and Lundy, Deliverables

Modeling, monitoring and control strategies for high temperature short time pasteurization systems - 1. Empirical model development
Dynamic models of high temperature short time (HTST) pasteurization systems can be developed by using empirical model development paradigms such as transfer functions and times series models. Properly designed experiments that excite all output variables provide good data that enable the development of accurate dynamic models. These models are used in feedback control and statistical process monitoring system design. The methodology for time series model development for HTST pasteurization processes is illustrated by using data collected from a pilot scale HTST pasteurization system., Endnote format citation

New Applications for Virtual Reality Training (semester?), IPRO 316
New Applications for Virtual Reality Training (semester?), IPRO 316
We have quite a few objectives for this IPRO. Our first objective is to research into both industrial and mass market applications of the Product Animations technology. After this first objective, we take 2 paths. The first leads to determining a screening criterion to select the best industrial prospects. We then plan to quantify the value propositions for the prospects selected from objective 2. When this is finished, we will create a deliverable simulation example, and finally write down any and all recommendations for future work with this IPRO. The other path leads to researching the idea or design of an ASP website. After this has been implemented, we want to use a PAI example of a milkshake machine, and show this on the ASP at IPRO day., Deliverables for IPRO 316: New Applications for Virtual Reality Training for the Fall 2007 semester

BUOY (Semester Unknown) IPRO 310
BUOY (Semester Unknown) IPRO 310
The problem posed with blind and visually impaired (BVI) swimmers is one of safety and independence. BVI individuals need to be able to orientate themselves in a swimming pool and avoid obstructions like lane-lines, pool walls and other swimmers for a safe experience. Additionally, it is important to BVI swimmers to maintain their independence and maintain a low profile during this experience. The Buoy team will focus on the design, testing and implementation of assistive technology focused on a pool environment with continuous input and feedback from the BVI community. A current passive device created in previous IPROs will be field-tested in a BVI pool for the semester in order to identify failure-modes of the device and collect real-world BVI user feedback to discover areas for improvement. Additionally, two groups have been organized to assess the use of invisible-fence and ultrasound technology in the creation of new assistive technology. Surveys and interviews will be conducted with the BVI community on a continuous basis to ensure the Buoy team is meeting the needs of the market., Deliverables
Inflatable Greenhouse (semester?), IPRO 344
Inflatable Greenhouse (semester?), IPRO 344
The purpose of the Inflatable Greenhouse IPRO was to design an air supported structure that was cheaper than the current greenhouse solution. The structural support of current greenhouses creates shadows that prevent an even sunlight exposure for the plants. The other issues we investigated were the cost, size, thermal control, and pest control of current greenhouse designs. The majority of the cost for a traditional greenhouse goes towards the structural support therefore an air supported structure should be significantly cheaper. The basic greenhouse design is oriented towards human occupants and is subsequently quite large. If the greenhouse was instead designed to house the plants already in the ground, just for the months that they needed shelter to grow, the cut back in size would also greatly affect the cost. We also looked into the thermal qualities of greenhouses. The very nature of a greenhouse absorbs and traps the light and heat of the sun. Without a cooling system a greenhouse can overheat and harm the plants within it. The other problem we found with current greenhouses was the pest control solution. Most greenhouses use strong chemicals that require special training for use and safety. Even the “organic” solutions use natural chemicals in concentrations considered toxic. Our goal was to design a greenhouse that would address each of these issues with a cheap and practical solution., Deliverables for IPRO 334: Inflatable Greenhouse for the Spring 2006 semester
