Interdisciplinary Design Education And Strategy (Semester Unknown) IPRO 301
Interdisciplinary Design Education And Strategy (Semester Unknown) IPRO 301
For years, the IPRO Program at IIT has been forced to operate wherever space can be found. Often, facilities are not equipped for the needs of the program. It has become necessary to find a way to give the IPRO Program its own dedicated space. If we give the program its own space, then what is needed in that space? What needs to be done with it? What types of spaces are necessary? What technologies will be used? IPRO 301 exists to answer these questions. We will provide ideas to IIT that can solve these problems. ii, Deliverables

Study of the helix model
The quantum properties of a helix-like shaped QCD string are studied in the context of the semi-classical Lund fragmentation model. It is shown how simple quantization rules combined with the causality considerations in the string fragmentation process describe the mass hierarchy of light pseudoscalar mesons. The quantized helix string model predicts observable quantum effects related to the threshold behaviour of the intrinsic transverse momentum of hadrons, and of the minimal transverse momentum difference between adjacent hadrons., Sponsorship: IIT College of Science, High Energy Physics Division of Argonne National Laboratory
PB Our Space- A Parsons Brinckerhoff Project (Summer 2011) IPRO 320
PB Our Space- A Parsons Brinckerhoff Project (Summer 2011) IPRO 320
Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) is an engineering, construction, technical, and management services firm that provides diverse solutions to private industrial customers worldwide, as well as to federal, regional, and local government agencies. Gathering requirements and feedback from the stakeholders for each project is imperative to meet the client’s needs. This process may be challenging due to the stakeholders’ diversity, location and time constraints. IPRO 320 was commissioned to design an application to interact with stakeholders for all PB projects. The stakeholders will be able to access information and take surveys, as well as post comments and other forms of multimedia to voice their opinions related to specific PB projects. During the summer 2011 semester, the IPRO developed concepts for an operational mobile application and web browser called PB OUR SPACE. To begin, this project required a vast amount of research and collaboration with Parsons Brinckerhoff. In order to make the most of a limited amount of time, the semester was divided into two parts. The first half of the semester was used to gather information about PB to build a better understanding of what would be required for the application. For the second half of the semester, we utilized that information to create a storyboard showing how the application will be used and developed. The functionality of the mobile application and browser is detailed in Appendix 3: Storyboard. The future IPRO team will be able to continue and expand this work by creating a working prototype of the storyboard concepts. All our work this semester has been compiled and filed to help make a smooth transition between semesters. This information contains the progress made thus far as well as recommendations for development of the application. By providing this information, the developed storyboard and proposed conclusions will make a solid framework for the development of the product, PB OUR SPACE (stakeholders’ perspectives about contextual elements)., Sponsorship: Parsons Brinckerhoff, Project Plan for IPRO 320: PB Our Space- A Parsons Brinckerhoff Project for the Summer 2011 semester

Intermodal Container Facility Innovations for the Chicago Area with focus on Kankakee (Semester Unknown) IPRO 307)
Intermodal Container Facility Innovations for the Chicago Area with focus on Kankakee (Semester Unknown) IPRO 307)
IPRO 307 is following the path of its predecessors in order to help improve the shipping transportations and facilities in Kankakee County, IL. While there have been other IPRO teams that have contributed to the modernization of the intermodal system at MI-Jack Shipping Company, our sponsor is now looking for us to further their research in this field. They would also like us to further the research in high speed intermodal along with a viaduct enhancement system. One of our tasks is to select a location in Kankakee County to place the intermodal system. We have decided to break this into two locations with one being in-city and the other being out-of-city. Kankakee County has been selected because two major rail lines pass through it. There is also a highway that runs through the center of it. Therefore, it is an ideal 2 location for an intermodal yard. Also, there is a wind farm being built in Kankakee, so we will be able to save energy by thinking green. In our selection process for a location, we may need to relocate some people. Therefore, our plan is to have affordable housing at our out-of-city location. We will design this affordable housing along with the warehouses and storage facilities, which go along with the design of an intermodal yard., Deliverables
Jet Impingement Tone Suppression Using Powered Resonance Tubes
This work is an experimental study of high subsonic jet impingement tone suppression. We begin by documenting the characteristics of the impingement tone for various Mach numbers and standoff (nozzle exit to ground plate) distances. The results revealed frequency staging and the presence of two types of impingement tones. A novel feature of our work is the use of four miniature high-frequency actuators known as powered resonance tubes that were located circumferentially around the main jet nozzle. The powered resonance tubes were capable of producing high amplitude acoustic excitation over a range of frequencies, up to 17.5 kHz. Our target excitation frequency range was about 3-5 times that of the natural flow instability. Using high-frequency excitation, tonal suppression levels as high as 20 dB and broadband suppression levels as high as 5-10 dB were obtained. The mass addition rate from the powered resonance tubes was of the order of 2% of the mass flow rate from the main jet. Mass flow reductions could be obtained under conditions when the powered resonance tube resonated strongly. Our results suggest that appropriately designed miniature powered resonance tube actuators have potential for use in flow control applications., http://dx.doi.org/10.2514/1.15818
Hybrid Electric Bicycle (Spring 2003) IPRO 315: Hybrid Electric Bicycle IPRO315 Spring2003 Final Presentation
Hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) combine the internal combustion engine (ICE) of a conventional vehicle with the battery and electric motor of an electric vehicle. Hybrid electric propulsion, currently available in a limited selection of automobiles, improves fuel economy while enhancing torque at low speeds. Onboard computers control the utilization of the ICE and electric motor, by selecting one or both power sources to drive the vehicle. A battery delivers power to the electric motor and is recharged by a generator driven by the ICE and by regenerative braking. This IPRO will seek to obtain similar benefits for a bicycle equipped with an electric motor and rechargeable battery by substituting the cyclist in the place of the hybrid electrics ICE. Regenerative braking and downhill pedaling will be investigated to recharge the battery. The course will likely involve at least one semester for requirements gathering, a feasibility study, and a computer simulation demonstrating the findings. Subsequent semesters will be engaged in the fabrication of a prototype. Mechanical engineers will work through motor and drive gear placement as well as other logistics. Chemical engineers will assess battery technologies to maximize power and ability to recharge. Biomedical engineers will study and design the man machine interface. Electrical engineers will assess power requirements of the motor and determine generator size needed. Computer engineers are needed to determine all control requirements and develop algorithms to satisfy them. Computer scientists are needed for programming and debugging., Sponsorship: Santa Cruz Bicycles, Argonne National Laboratory, TREK bicycles, Project Plan for IPRO 315: Hybrid Electric Bicycle for Spring 2003 semester
