The IIT Reality: Finding a Job (semester?), IPRO 333
This semester IPRO 333, Video Documentary – Getting a Job after Graduation, is aiming its effort to help Illinois Institute of Technology Students get better jobs after graduation. This continuation of an earlier IPRO will strive to produce a video that presents four different challenges to be completed in the job seeking process. Students will work together in four “challenge” teams as well as three technical teams to accomplish its objective., Deliverables for IPRO 333: The IIT Reality - Finding a Job for the Fall 2006 semester
Integrated Bi-directional Converter for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles
This invention relates to a power module for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle including an integrated converter having a rectifier changing AC to DC, a DC/DC converter changing from a first voltage to a second voltage, and a battery storing electrical energy. The integrated converter operates in three modes 1) AC plug-in charging mode, 2) boost mode supplying power from the battery to the electrical bus and 3) buck mode supplying power from the electrical bus to the battery. The integrated converter utilizes the same single inductor during each of the three operating modes to reduce cost and weight of the system., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent
SYNTHESIS OF MODEL-BASED CONTROLLERS FOR AN AUTOTHERMAL REACTOR
Model-based controllers for a bench scale autothermal tubular packed-bed reactor have been formulated using the Internal Model Control (IMC) approach. The Structural Dominance Analysis technique has been used in developing the reduced-order models. Controller performance at robust and sensitive steady states have been assessed through simulations and experiments. Both PI and model-based controllers can regulate reactor operation at robust steady states, but only third order IMC controllers are able to regulate reactor operation at the sensitive steady state., Endnote format citation
BSM searches in multi-objects final states in ATLAS
Recent results on searches for new physics from Run 1 of the Large Hadron Collider are reported. The ATLAS experiment has already collected more than 20 fb−1 of integrated luminosity, allowing for a large number of new phenomena searches in many different final states. No deviations from the Standard Model expectations are found, and corresponding constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model are obtained., Sponsorship: IIT College of Science, High Energy Physics Division of Argonne National Laboratory
Smart Specs for Civilian Military Applications (Semester Unknown) EnPRO 350
Smart Specs for Civilian Military Applications (Semester Unknown) EnPRO 350
In the real world, receiving the right information at the right time exacts success or failure. In the growing sport of paintball, every little edge counts towards victory. Real Time Initiative offers Smart Specs to our consumers to obtain an edge over the competition. Smart Specs relay real-time networked information amongst the users to distinguish friends from foes. The communication occurs through head mounted displays worn within the paintball masks. It reduces friendly fire which in turn reduces tension within the team., Deliverables

DYNAMIC ESTIMATION OF TEMPERATURE AND CONCENTRATION PROFILES IN A PACKED-BED REACTOR
A two-dimensional nonlinear distributed-parameter optimal state estimation algorithm has been developed and applied to an exothermic packed bed catalytic reactor. Temperature and concentration profiles were estimated from limited temperature and/or concentration measurements. Orthogonal collocation was used to solve the differential sensitivity and filtering equations. Both simulations and on-line experiments with a pilot scale packed bed reactor for the partial oxidation of methanol have been used to study the effects of measurement choice, model parameter errors, and unmeasured process disturbances. Excellent tracking of the reactor profiles was achieved with only one or two properly placed temperature sensors., Endnote format citation
Recent developments in Monte Carlo simulations
This talk outlines the current status of Monte Carlo simulations in particle physics. It demonstrates the implementation of automated NLO contributions to matrix elements. The matching methods MC@NLO and POWHEG are outlined and results using various NLO tools are presented. The first plots from POWHEG showing the matching of NNLO matrix elements to the parton shower are also presented., Sponsorship: IIT College of Science, High Energy Physics Division of Argonne National Laboratory
The academic library building in the digital age : a study of construction, planning, and design of new library space
The Academic Library Building in the Digital Age: A Study of Construction, Planning, and Design of New Library Space is the first comprehensive study of planning and construction of academic library buildings completed entirely in the new century. Given digitization of collections, the dynamic mix of new learning spaces with traditional library functions, and other factors informing contemporary library design, the digital age has not raised so much the question of if libraries will survive, but how they will survive. This book answers this question, among others, by looking to academic library building projects completed in recent years.

Electrohydrodynamic Conduction Pump
An electrohydrodynamic (EHD) conduction pump is provided for pumping dielectric liquids, and a particular adaptation for mass transport of isothermal and non-isothermal single phase liquids. The EHD conduction pump does not require direct injection of electric charges into the fluid. The EHD conduction pump includes an EHD pumping section and associated connecting tubes with electrodes arranged in series in the pumping section. The electrodes are coupled to a high voltage low current dc power supply. A positive polarity dc voltage is applied to the electrodes. Various electrode configurations may be used, such as three-needle, hollow-tube, or pin-needle electrode configuration., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent

Orthotics and Prosthetics in Latin America (Semester Unknown)
Orthotics and Prosthetics in Latin America (Semester Unknown)
The overall goal of our IPRO team is to create a program for delivering orthotics and prosthetics that is sustainable. This will be accomplished by improving the quality of the product by increasing availability of funding, improving cost effectiveness of prosthetics, and promoting awareness of treatment available. Our IPRO team has divided the project into three separate subgroups: Business, Technical, and Impact., Deliverables

“How Many Earths?” (Semester Unknown) IPRO 332
The mission of “How Many Earths?” is to educate people on the issues of sustainability and energy needs, concerns, and sources. In doing this we look to expand on work that has been done in previous semesters in addition to developing modules for a wider age base. Previously the modules have been focused on High School and Middle School students; this semester, we look to develop a program for elementary school classrooms in addition to post-high school education., Deliverables
