- Oxygen Carrying Multiple Emulsions
- A process is provided wherein hemoglobin, a fragile material, is formulated into high hemoglobin content water-in-oil-in-water multiple emulsion while maintaining high yields and high oxygen exchange activity. A multiple emulsion of aqueous oxygen carrying material in oil in outer aqueous phase is suitable for provision of oxygen for oxygen transfer processes. - Nonlinear time series models for multivariable dynamic processes
- Several paradigms are available for developing nonlinear dynamic input-output models of processes. Polynomial models, threshold models, models based on spline functions, and polynomial models with exponential and trigonometric functions can describe various types of nonlinearities and pathological behavior observed in many physical processes. A unified nonlinear model development framework is not available, and the search of the appropriate nonlinear structure is part of the model development effort. Various artificial neural network structures and nonlinear time series model structures are presented and illustrated by developing a model from data sets generated by a series of example systems. The use of a nonlinear model development paradigm which is not compatible with the types of nonlinearities that exist in the data can have a significant effect on model development effort and model accuracy., Endnote format citation

- Synthetic Biology: Engineering a Novel Organism (semester?), IPRO 302
- Our objectives are fairly straightforward. If the genetic code can be called its own language, then we want to become fluent in it. The current technology does not allow us the ability to “write our own novel” (i.e. make a new organism from scratch), but what we can do is write our own pamphlet. This semester, we are trying to complete our test case, which is to create a colony of Escherichia coli that flash different colors all in unison. Once we complete this task, we hope to export this system into higher organisms, such as Zebrafish (Danio rerio). We are also seeking to move forward conceptually by planning long term goals for the Ipro, such as the development of not just test cases, but new, useful organisms., Deliverables for IPRO 302: Synthetic Biology: Engineering a Novel Organism for the Spring 2006 semester

- Method for Efficient Heat Treatment of Steel
- A method for heat treatment of steel and a system thereof is provided. First the steel is austenitized at a suitable temperature and then the temperature is rapidly brought down to the austempering temperature. Here the cyclic austempering is carried out between two austempering temperatures by modulating the temperature with controlled heating and cooling and the controlled temperature modulation is obtained by controlling the temperature-time profile in a batch furnace or by controlling the zone temperatures in a continuous furnace. This method of cyclic austempering reduces the austempering time, reduces the energy consumption and emissions, enhances the productivity and reduces the process cost., Sponsorship: Tata Consultancy Services, Ltd. and Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent

- MATHEMATICAL-MODELS OF COCURRENT SPRAY-DRYING
- A steady state mathematical model for a cocurrent spray dryer-is developed. The model includes the mass, momentum, and energy balances for a single drying droplet as well as the total energy and mass balances of the drying medium. A log normal droplet size distribution is assumed to hold at the exit of the twin-fluid atomizer located at the top of the drying chamber. The discretization of this log normal distribution with a certain number of bins yields a system of nonlinear coupled first-order differential equations as a function of the axial distance of the drying chamber. This system of equations is used to compute the axial changes in droplet diameter, density, velocity, moisture, and temperature for the droplets at each representative bin. Furthermore, the distributions of important process parameters such as droplet moisture content, diameter, density, and temperature are also obtainable along the length of the chamber. On the basis of the developed model, a constrained nonlinear optimization problem is solved, where the exit particle moisture content is minimized with respect to the process inputs subjected to a fixed mean particle diameter at the chamber exit. Response surface studies based on empirical models are also performed to illustrate the effectiveness of these techniques in achieving the optimal solution when an a priori model is not available. The structure of empirical models obtained from the model is shown to be in agreement with the structure of the empirical models obtained from the experimental studies., Endnote format citation

- Resource Consumption Awareness in the Home (semester?), IPRO 334
- People are inadequately informed about their energy consumption behaviors in the home. Providing real time feedback at the point of decision making will enhance consumer awareness of energy consumption, and potentially lead to behavior modification. The IPRO 334 team will design and evaluate means of improving energy consumption awareness in the home. Team 334 will determine what metrics are most valuable to consumers and the best means to communicate that feedback., Deliverables for IPRO 334: Resource Consumption Awareness in the Home for the Spring 2007 semester

- Compact Inductor with Stacked Via Magnetic Cores for Integrated Circuits
- An on-chip inductor device for Integrated Circuits utilizes coils on a plurality of metal layers of the IC with electrical connectors between the coils and a magnetic core for the inductor of stacked vias running between the coils. The magnetic core is made from a series of stacked vias which are deposited between each metal layer of the IC having a coil. The magnetic core desirably includes an array of magnetic bars comprising the magnetic core. The via material of the magnetic core may be both magnetic and electrically conductive. The magnetic and electrically conductive via material may also be used for the planar coil electrical connectors or other electrically conductive parts of the IC, or both, thereby lessening fabrication steps. Films of magnetic material may be formed at the ends of the inductor to provide a closed magnetic circuit for the inductor. A high Q factor inductor of small (e.g., transistor) size is thus obtained. The materials and processes which enable the on-chip inductor device are compatible with ordinary IC fabrication methods., Sponsorship: Illinois Institute of Technology, United States Patent

- Using Assessment Data to Improve Library Services : presented at ILA 2007 conference
- IIT Libraries conducted LibQUAL+ service quality assessment in 2004 and 2006. This presentation will outline strategies we undertook to address issues identified in the 2004 assessment, and evaluate their success based on assessment results in 2006. We will also discuss the importance of measuring academic library effectiveness in higher education’s emerging outcomes-based culture.
