The difference between metallic phase change materials (PCMs) and organic and inorganic PCMs is discussed. Bi-In-Sn and Bi-In-Sn-Ga alloys with near eutectic compositions were analyzed using DSC, X-Ray, EDS and metallography to establish the alloy properties. An attempt was made to package the alloy in metallic and non-metallic foams and various tests such as infiltration and cycling tests were conducted to test the feasibility of various containment materials. These PCM alloys were applied in a prototype cooling system of electronic devices for better heat dissipation than conventional heat sinks. Tests were conducted to measure the effectiveness of the alloys. Different designs were suggested for the containment of the alloy.
