As the wireless marketplace becomes more saturated with cellular, paging and wireless internet services, who will create the competitive advantage, and will the advantage come from shrinking the wireless laptop computer or by expanding the services of phones, pagers and personal digital assistants (PDA) to meet the all-in-one needs of future students. This IPRO focuses on several aspects of wireless technologies and will make extensive use of the Motorola Timeport two-way unified messaging device. Core topics include1) analysis of current and near-term wireless technologies and their application to the university settings, 2) creation of new university-focused, wireless applications to interactively deliver information to and from students (for example campus events, athletic schedules, interactive quizzing, student life, collaboration, enrollment services, and other web-centric information), 3) development of a complete business plan to market and distribute these two-way devices to universities. Specific tasks include evaluating the effectiveness of the Timeport wireless device in the distance learning and collaboration pilot programs that are continuing from Fall 2000, developing software using Timeport developer's kit (SDK) and participating in usability testing for the developed applications with the IPRO 304 team led by Professor Feinberg. Each student participating in this IPRO will receive a Timeport device for use in the Spring 2001 semester.
