The device itself consists of electrode modules implanted in the visual cortex of individuals with blindness. By inducing a current in the modules, the volunteer would potentially perceive phosphenes, or light perceptions similar to camera flash afterimages, which could possibly form functional vision. The sponsor’s study would be focused on developing an assistive device for individuals with complete blindness.
