l By sonny‘Mann 1 ~ Illinois Tech’s rejuvenated basketball squad won its eleventh game as it wound up the season by walloping a strong Concordia five to the tune of 71Mto 60 on Friday, March 3rd. As usual, George Scalamera showed his stuff as he tossed 'n 28 points. Their eleven wins against five losses finishes a highly successful season for the Tech ii The Techawha didn’t show much steam ah they walked oh the court at halftime leading by the slim margin of 30 to 28. However, in the Second half it was all Scalamera as he dumped 111132 points. Impressive, too, was the fine play making of Tom Goralka, Bob McCue, Howie Gardner and Bob Leiser which kept the ball in the Concordia “zone much of the time. The d;- ciding factor of the game was the hitting of 23 out of 27 char- ity tosses hy the Scarlet and Gray. The game marked the last time Big George will wear the chhawk uniform. Without a doubt he is the best center to play on an IIT basketball team. His 19.8 points per game average ranks him 18th in the country in small college com- petition based on National Col. legiate Athletic Board tabulations. He broke his own individual IIT scoring record of 279 points made last year by amassing 817 points this season. This year the boys from the pillar-palace hooped 933 points for an average of 58.3 points per game while allowing only 778 points to flow through their hoop. Their (le- fensivc average of 49.3 points a game ranks HT 15th in the country for small colleges. The Tech bucketcers burned up the baskets against Aurora Col- lege in racking up their highest score of the season, sinking 51 per cent of their shots in piling up 84 points. Contrasting this, Tech could only hit on 21 per cent of their throws in the second Navy Pier contest. Through the season the Techawks dropped in a neat 35.7 per cent of their tosses, show- ing the accuracy of the Techmen’s shooting. “This has been one of the best teams ever to play for the Insti- ,. .,. Ey Sid ,. Brushing aside a major obstacle, the cup-hungry cagers, of Theta Xi took another step in the direc- tion of their second straight cham- pionship. Monday night they faced AEPi and methodically rolled up a 31—19 halftime count against the fight» ing but badly outclassed losers. The champs also displayed their potent reserve strength when they played much of the game with some of their first string men under wraps. The second half was more of the same for AEPi, who up until Monday were in a contending posi— tion. At the final whistle the score had become 62-47 against them and it dropped the curtain on champion- ship thoughts for AEPi this year. In the second game of the evening, Alpha Sigma Phi re- tained their slim chance of over~ taking the leaders by trouncing Sigma Alpha Mu by a 50-25 tally. Bruce Tennant and Hank Lokay sparked the victors by dropping in buckets from all over the floor as well as by their heads-11o defensive pla y. The score at the half was 28-15 and after that Joe Bass and company were never again 2!. serious threat. . Tuesday night, Delta Tau Delta will meet Theta Xi in the game which will either clinch it for the defending champs or put them, in deadlock with the Alpha Sigs for first place. This, of course, is as- suming that TX will reel off vic- tories against a few of the lower position squads, which they cer- tainly will he favored to do. Donnell; J in close.
