BECEMB‘ER 2 1941” ‘ Face fihicaye Teacher Tomorrow, Marcelle @n Midway garerciay Going into his sophomore year as coach of HTS hoopsters, Re- mie Meyer will send his charges out on the floor Thursday atter‘ noon to avenge themselves for the two untimely defeats that they suffered at the hands of di- minutive Joe King and his Chi. cage Teacher’s college quintet last season. Despite many pro-season pro. dictions of a sad lack of reserve strength, Coach Meyer’s boys have developed very fast, and are in tip~top physical condition. As; a matter of fact, not less than twelve men are talented enough to warrant their playing in al- most every game. Once again, the Techmen will feature a very fast breaking offense. The five most Spry men on the team, Byrne, Pendlebury, Smart, Futterer, and Sommers, are quite apt to find themselves on the floor together with the express purpose of mak— ing a lot of baekcte fast and set- ting the opposition back on its heels. Froc'll‘hrowe Count One discouraging feature that has dogged the footsteps of almost every Techawk quintet is the in ability to sink a majority of their free-throws. Thia year, Coach Meyer expects history to repeat itself, but for a limited time only. Due to the limited time that the Tecbmen have to practice, almost all of it had to be spent running and scrimmaging in order to get into shape, and consequently the little matter of practicing free throws had to be neglected. How- ever, according to Coach Meyer, this; condition will be corrected by next week at the very latest. Af- ter the Techmen get a few games under their belts they will have to scrimmage less, and therefore, there will be more time for the Techrnen to better their free throw average. Big Week! A strenuous week is ahead for the Techmen, as they are sched- uled to scrimmage Loyola tonight, play C.T.C. at the Armory on Thursday, and then go after the “game of the year” Saturday night as they invade the Midway to battle a mediocre (we hope) U. of C. quintet. They started out the week last night as they took on American College of Physical Ed. in the season’s opener. Although Coach Meyer has not yet decided on his starting lineup, a probable lineup for Thursdays game will be Sieg and Pendle- ILLINGES TECH mill-42 BAfiKETBALL SCHEDULE Doc. 1 American (201. of RE. The outstanding prospect of the new men out for the team this year is Bill Smart, :1 2B co- op. Bill, has developed rapidly and has really opened the eyes of Coach Meyer with his speed and versatility. Another co-op, Wally Futterer, has shown remarkable development this year as he pots longr shots and works his way in under the basket to sink a few complicated stepin shots now and then. Other men that stand out above their teammates; are Hack- narth, Galandak, and Corey. Soph— omores Kidd, and O’Connell, ac- cording to Coach Meyer, are very smooth, and show remarkable co. ordination and not a little brain- work. i‘lymc and l’ondlobury Up to this point, Techs twin shining lights have not been men- tioned. Ambidextrous J no it i c Eyrne and Captain H o w a r <1 “Flash” Pencilebury, as usual, stand out head and shoulders over the rent of the squad. Byron is his old sell at; be flashes up and down the floor, sinking book shots, and nonchalantly stealing the ball from the opposition at random. Flash Pendlebury has reached top form and he is really on the ball thia year as he ehows promise of giving the oppoeing coaches and teams headaches with his: uncan- ny left-handed hook shots and versatile icadcrebip. Our Year! All in all. this year’s team is just one big happy family as each member of the squad treats the rest as brothers. The spirit and mental condition of the entire coiled in perfect, and there are no prime donnas. This year’s Tech- mvk five is headed for big things: and each and every student at UT ehould get out there and root for his team. Bon’t forget! ’l‘hureday, December 4, is the date and the place ii; the 108th engineers arm— or r. The game of the year is Sat- urday night December 6, at the U. of (“3. That in the game that both coach and players really want to cop and in order to do so, they must have the support of the entire emdent body. Athletic pass es are now available in the treas~ urer’s office in the main building. ’l‘heee passes admit each student free of charge to all games in- cluding the Chicago game. Shoreehooi‘ers Start Sirenuous Schedule Amassing a total of 928 out of a possible 1600 points, the Rifle Team last Friday entered a ser- ious challenge to the Wheaten squad in the first match of the season. However, the riflemen won’t know whether they were victorious until the mail brings the tidings from Wheaten. Leading the Techawks with scores of 188 and 187 were Norman Carey and George Borre. They were hard pressed for the honors, however, by Ray Smith and Roy Peterson with 186’s and Joe Hind with 181. Two additional postal matches are already scheduled for the very near future; the first match is against Northwestern next Satur- day, the other on the Saturday following, with Indiana Univer- sity. Squad Uncertain Coach "Mac” McGillivray is still uncertain as to the caliber of the present squad. The team is lacking in returning lettermen, but the new material has shown ability. The freshmen, sparked by Ford and McNerny are better than average. Only three days remain for time trials, so stated Manager ”Howie” Bunce yesterday. Every candidate must have his time trials completed by Thursday or forfeit his chance to. compete in the opening meet. Still prominent~ ly missing from trial tests is “Whitney” Pearson, Speedster ex. traordinary. Diving, My 0’ My! As yet, the diving department is questionable for neither of the returning veterans have showed up for practice. However Tregay and Condon are co-ops and will not be in school till December 8. Also among the absent is the high- ly publicized Herzl diver, Bill Mayer. Schedule Ready Manager Elunce also announced the schedule for the ensuing sea~ son. it includes three home meets at Bartlett pool and five travel» ing meets. Prominent among these is the four day, 1,008 mile trek the aquatic stars will take into eastern Tennessee during mid-semester holidays. Two open dates are yet to be filled. Chicago Teacher’s or Beloit college are the likely opponents. Beat dbl—ago been @hicogo fibril? @i‘iléiihfii‘iéi
