: I. ii? an By Warren Spitz “Pu-ui-ay Boll!" Yesiree, the great old American ‘ca'll of the' wild‘ has been heard resounding throughout the warm-clinic d spring training camps and finally has wormed its Way onto the Illi- nois Tech campus. That is, of course, dependent upon ole man April’s bothersome habit of poor— ing out his grief in the form of tears over our gigantic Ogden Field diamond This week will see the official inauguration of Tech softball and baseball play for 1941. ‘f‘ionr ny’ Well-357mm loads; the varsity nine in Lake Forest tomorrow am! ‘Chock’ Moilleer p In 5h 8 5 upon the control throttle of the intramural softball meet. As ‘3onny’ pilots the Techa-wks in their opener it sort of reminds us of the feeling that a big—league manager must have when he first takes over the controls of a team. He's put on a spot and if he makes good he’s a real ‘big leaguer', but if he flops, it’s; back to the hueh leagues. Well, here at lllinois Tech, we’re building up o feelmg that we are somewhat of a, ‘big—leogue’, maybe not exactly built on the same principles as the ‘major’ leagues but at lease resembling them in certain aspects. ’ Let’e out it this way. ’l‘he hig leagues are a collection of teame representing various sections and competing against one another to determine which one group, throughout a season’s; play, we come through many obstacles and hurdles with the best record. lllinohs 'l‘ech is. a league oi ‘learim’ rem-ramming their school and (lill‘orem families aml exec» lions, each ‘lcam' being, in this {3380. on individual, who, through a combination of ability and limo tic, can also bring home a per.» want." Tech’s nine men out there on the cliamond are all ‘biglcaguore’ as is their new coach. Emmy Weissman. If these men get out or: the field and put in some epiritefi fight and hustle, then as for as we’re concerned they’re and we are With them all the way. Baseball is one game where? pep, fight, hustle or whatever you ml; it can mean the difference be- twecn a nine inning contest em? a hard-fought, heart-felt battle. A big-leaguer must have a big heart and the way to show that, is by demonstrating a talent for who ning and losing with the some coo» iinuous drive every minute on the field. This is the start of what looks all 1L1.” ”’ like the beet season in many years of Tech baseball, We want to get not there and put up one 11 ~ - l of a battle every game and let the op- position know that they have been up against a team of big-league caliber, Win, lose or draw. Two “Al’s” are HTS big pitch- ing hopes for a victorious sched- ule, these being Alexamier Yur- eis ami Algem hombres. Al Yur- sie is the outstanding twirler from last years squad which rang up a record of five wins as against eight losses. Al Damlbros, a newcomer from ‘Wilson Jr. Col- lege, is a rangy lefbhahller with plenty of power. The only weak spot in the set-up is at shortstop, Where Frank Leon- ard starred in 1940. Frank is gone and will be «orely missed. How» ever, the crop of men out for po- sitions is outstanding and return- ing letter men in every position will have to fight hard to retain their posts.
